How to become highly skilled Sermon: How to become highly skilled

Theme:Godly-skilled people know howDate:9 February 2014 morning servicePreacher:Pastor Francois van NiekerkText: Hebrews 5:14 (NLT)Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong. IntroductionI think of a highly skilled person as a genuine specialist or master in a specific field. In Bible times, King Davids mighty men were counted as such highly skilled people. All of them were expert archers, and they could shoot arrows or sling stones with their left hand as well as their right. They were all relatives of Saul from the tribe of Benjamin. Some brave and experienced warriors from the tribe of Gad also defected to David while he was at the stronghold in the wilderness. They were expert with both shield and spear, as fierce as lions and as swift as deer on the mountains. 1 Chronicles 12:2,8 (NLT)Daniel was another highly skilled Bible character, both spiritually as a prophet and vocationally as an administrator and leader. This sets an inspiring example for us!In modern times such highly skilled people are sometimes accredited with the title of master in their field.

1

Gary Player 1978

In golf I think of the US Masters and our very own Gary Player who was the first non-American to win this prestigious championship in 1961 and the green blazer that goes with it.2

He also happens to be a Christian and a respected ambassador for South Africa.

Kenny Solomon 2012

Chess on world-class level awards the title of Chess Grand Master to those who achieve outstanding results. Kenny Solomon from Mitchells Plain became the first South African to receive this title in 2012. And so we find highly skilled people or specialists in all fields from sport to entertainment, health, engineering, etc. Those who become highly skilled also win an outstanding platform to make a positive impact on this world. Not everyone can become a specialist in their field, but with the help of the Holy Spirit all who are willing and faithful can become highly skilled in the things of God to make a huge and life-giving difference in the lives of others, their communities and spheres of influence. (Think of Brother Lawrence who peeled potatoes in a monastery kitchen, yet was highly skilled in loving God and wrote The Practice of the Presence of God that impacted countless lives through the centuries.)Lets take a closer look at how we can become highly skilled for God.

What has been covered about skill so far?Main points

What has been covered about skill so farIn our current series we have established the following about skill:

5

God is all-knowingGod is all-knowing and is willing to share His wisdom with us.6

What has been covered about skill so far? God is all-knowing Holy Spirit great Teacher Anointing & skill Multi-skilled Multi-used Transfer skill

God is all-knowing.The Holy Spirit is the great Teacher and ready to help us grow in both practical and spiritual skills. The greatest place of empowering is where the anointing of the Holy Spirit and skill converge (illustrated by the example of David facing Goliath).Everybody can develop skill attitude is critical. To be effective in life and for God in our modern world requires of us to become multi-skilled across the spectrum soft skills (relationships, language, social), hard skills (work knowledge and ability in a specific field) and spiritual skills (hearing Gods voice, discernment and prayer).Multi-skilled means multi-used. The final aim should be to transfer skill and not only have it. Lets make skill investments beyond ourselves.

7the Master(s)

2. Love the Master(s)A highly skilled person is someone who has mastered something. To become skilled, we need to spend time with the skilled. We do not achieve master skills in isolation. The difference between godly-skilled masters and so-called experts is humility. Their skill is not on show or for sale! Those who followed Jesus acknowledged Him as Lord and Master and yet He served amongst them. This stands in stark contrast with the religious leaders and Pharisees who acted in arrogance and with judgmental attitudes.Jesus could say, Do as I do because He lived what He spoke. With the Pharisees it was a case of do what we say, but dont do what we do. We have a true Master in Jesus!Godly masters and highly skilled people make a difference. They are celebrated and invited because of their skill.

You can become a master under the Masters handWe can become masters in life under the hand of Jesus our Lord and Master! It is the greatest honour and opportunity to be invited to walk with Him and become like Him.To become masters in life we need to love the Master and live with the Master. So lets love Jesus the Master and learn from Him.
