Thought leadership =Becoming your client’s hero.
Thought leader (def): an individual or firm that is recognized as an authority in a specialized field and whose expertise is sought and often rewarded.
You may be an “SME” (Subject Matter Expert) and not even know it.
• Example:• Attended Syracuse University• President of the Official Syracuse University Alumni Club of NYC• Network of Syracuse employees, alumni, and fans• Follower of Syracuse news
Identify what’s going on in the space.
1. Read the industry pubs. And not just Ad Age.
What publications are important to your clients?
2. Network!
On Twitter & LinkedIn.
“IRL” at conferences and
industry events (e.g SXSW, SMW, AW).
Take classes (e.g. General
Assembly).
3. Know your audience.
4. Know how to share.
• Social media• Company blog
• Dedicated client blasts• Industry trades
• Conference speaker
Why is it important to be in the know?
• Be seen as a trusted partner to your clients.• Compel your team members to advocate on your behalf.• Stay ahead of the industry (career survival).
