Paraphrasing a SourceWhen paraphrasing a source you must:

Read through the text that you would like to paraphraseAfter you have read and understood the piece of text, take a 5-10 minute break. Then summarise what you read in your own words.When something is very difficult to paraphrase, start by writing it down in simplest form, then write it down a 2nd time, how you would expect it to be written.Some words cannot be simplified because they are a technical term or a phrase used professionally.

Successful & Unsuccessful Paraphrases

Original:“By 1954, Vietnam was free of colonial rule , but it was divided into two states: in the north, the Viet Minh under Ho Chi Minh retained control; in the south, a pro-Western regime was established with support from the United States”.

Unsuccessful:By 1954 Vietnam was free of colonial rule, but it had become two states. In the North the Viet Minh had kept control and in the south a pro-Western regime had just been established and the United States supported it.

Successful:1954, although Vietnam was no longer under colonial rule, it had been split into two states: North and South Vietnam. North Vietnam was still being ruled by the Viet Minh(under Ho Chi Minh) and in South Vietnam a pro-Western government had been set up. This government had gained support from the United States.

Quoting a SourceWhen quoting a source you must: Use quotation marks around your selected piece of text Reference the author of your chosen piece of text Cite the place where you found the text: Websites, Books, Newspapers…etc.

ReferencingReferences are made in order to acknowledge the use of other people’s work. They also allow people to go and find out more information by themselves. When you use references in any assignments(e.g. essays) it shows your teacher the amount of research you have done. The 2 forms of referencing are “Harvard” and “APA”. Here are some examples of how you would use the two ways of referencing.

Real-Life Story

Editor and assistant professor of creative writing at Eastern Washington University Rachel Toor uses many inspirational and catchy phrases. These phrases and words stick in the minds of her students, it took her a while to realize that her students were so intrigued by her words that they began to mimic her in their work. They were repeating exactly what they had heard her say sentences and sentences on end without realizing it. The fact that they weren’t referencing her or using quotation marks made their work plagiarism. The situation hadn’t gotten too severe, because she talked to them about it.
