The James B. Hunt Jr. Library in North Carolina, USA, represents the future of libraries and a true understanding of how people can thrive in a place

that is built on digital.

We believe that not just libraries, but all organizations can learn a lot from

the Hunt Library. It makes you rethink why you are here, what you

want to be and how you fit into a rapidly changing, digital world.

Besides the digital aspects of the library, the building looks amazing and plays a big role in its success.

It was designed by Snøhetta, the same architects who redesigned the world

famous library of Alexandria (picture).

The first co-working spaces were made here 2000 years ago.

Philosophers and mathematicians came together to solve the

problems of their time. We’ve come a long way, but this

principle has remained the same.

And yet, many people have stopped visiting or will never even go to

libraries because of the Internet.

Libraries have become associated with an outdated product in paper books.

The successful libraries of today go back to their co-working roots, while keeping the digital reality of today in mind.

How the Hunt Library is built on digital

It changed the experience of getting information and collaboration, by providing

simplified, inspiring working spaces combined with the latest technology.

Data visualization labs and co-working spaces.

iTunes Google Play

Its app guides you around the library, lets you reserve rooms or equipment,…

It offers a broad range of technology lending, video and audio

production studios, 3D printers,…

The BookBot, an automated book delivery system with a two million book

collection saves money, time and space.

Most of its books are also available digitally, those that aren’t can be

requested for delivery through the online database.

It uses the same platforms as its audience and encourages them to co-create the stories

on Social Media.

3 Takeaways from Hunt Library

1. Libraries should look at their roots and provide digitally

supported co-working spaces.

2. If you want to play a role in the physical world, you need to think about how people experience your physical locations and how they interact with

them through their devices.

3. You may not have the budgets for highly advanced, expensive

technology, but with a good business model and information,

you can start small.
