Blackhawk pump technology further enhances the inherent advantages of positive displacement pumps for landfill operations.

InvestIng In our Future

Blackhawk’s top-head-drive, positive-displacement piston pumps feature a drive motor above the wellhead and rugged downhole components in the well.

Above the wellhead: Three principle all-weather motor options: Explosion-proof electric, workhorse pneumatic and economical solar/electric. Windmill power also available.

Below the wellhead: Low-frictioncomponentscomeinarangeof high-strength materials, including stainless steel, customizable to individual situations. The simple pumping action gently pulls liquid from the well without disturbing the formation:

• A flexible fiberglass rod within a stainless-steel cylinder connects the above-grade motor to a drive piston at the bottom of the stainless-steel pump barrel.

• As the motor gently pulls up the rod, the piston creates suction at pump intake.

• Liquidissuckedthroughastrainerintothe foot valve.

• The reciprocating piston lifts liquid up the cylinder shaft with each stroke to a discharge tee above the wellhead, but does not allow liquid to escape when the piston is pushed down.

• Flow is monitored and regulated simply and safely outside the well.

Electric Submersible Air Lift Pump Piston Pump

Principal Uses High-flowwater-wellpumping; light, clear, cool liquids

Low-flowpumping Low-flowpumping,0–11gpm

How it Works Impellers, above the submerged motor, rotate rapidly to create suction, pulling liquids into the pump. The pressure of centrifugal force pushes liquid up into the discharge pipe.

Down-well pump cavity fills with liquid, pushing exhaust air to surface. High-pressureairthenforces liquid up and out of pump.

A motor above the wellhead drives a sucker rod that moves a piston up and down in the well — a foot valve at well bottom allows liquid to enter while the reciprocating piston pulls liquid up

Power Source Electric only, in the well Compressed air only, in the well

Electricity grid, compressed air, solar, windmill

Lift Created by rapid rotation of metal impellers in constant motion. In landfill applications, inadequate liquid levels create concern about netpositivesuctionhead(NPSH)anddestructive cavitation if well runs dry

Air pressure builds in pump to force liquid out

Piston movement sucks the liquid up the cylinder, liquid passes through piston top and out of discharge tee

Stuffing box Down in the well At surface, above wellhead

Servicing • Pump is in constant contact with liquid;uncontrolledpumpflow;must be pulled to service

• All-metal parts in constant motion subject to impeller and bearing wear and cavitation

• Motorsubjecttofailurefromhigh temperature, dry running, corrosion, clogging

• With other than clear, light liquids, pumps often require replacement

Pump is in constant contact with down-well liquid;pumpmustbepulled from well to maintain and repair

Motorandstuffingboxservicedatsurface, away from liquid

Advantages • Highflowrate

• Lowinitialcost

• Highefficiency

Works in clear liquids • Simple operation

• Variable, broad flow rates

• Unaffected by vacuum

• No pump pulling — longer life

• Odorcontrol

• Handlesbroadestrangeofliquids

• Lowercostofownership

• Pumps to 1,000 ft., 300 m.

• No bio-fouling

• Can be made explosion proof

Responsible operators today can’t simply install an inexpensive pump in the well and hope for the best. Pumping challenges are tougher than before: New environmental standards, clean-production requirements, deeper holes and extreme conditions. Old-style, general-service pumps weren’t designed for this. That’s why more knowledgeable engineers today specify Blackhawk.

Blackhawk Technology Company is the originator and No. 1 producer of top-head-drive, positive-displacement piston pumps — leading-edge technology that is unaffected by vacuum, pumps deep and ends the expense of routine pump pulling. The pneumatic, electric and windmill motors are above the wellhead, making for safe and easy service and repair. Simply put, Blackhawk pumps work when others don’t.

Blackhawk’s cost-effective and reliable piston pumps are ideal for gas-well dewatering, odor control, landfill leachate, condensate-

AsaparticipatingmemberoftheEPA’sLandfillMethaneOutreachProgram, Blackhawk Technology Company promotes the use of landfill gas as an alternative energy source.
