Handwriting refers to a person's writing created with awriting utensil such as a pen or pencil. The termencompasses both printing and cursive styles and isseparate from formal calligraphy or typeface.

Because each person's handwriting is unique, it can beused to verify a document's writer, and the deteriorationof a person's handwriting is also a symptom or result ofcertain diseases.

Each person's handwriting is unique. Even identical twins write differently. A person's handwriting is also relatively stable and changes little over time.

Characteristics of handwriting include:

• specific shape of letters, e.g. their roundness or sharpness.

• regular or irregular spacing between letters.

• the slope of the letters.

• the rhythmic repetition of the elements or arrhythmia.

• the pressure to the paper.

• the average size of letters.

Graphology

What is Graphology?

Graphology is the analysis of the physicalcharacteristics and patterns of handwritingpurporting to be able to identify the writer,indicating psychological state at the time ofwriting, or evaluating personality characteristics.It is generally considered pseudoscience. Theterm is sometimes incorrectly used to referto forensic document examination.

Graphology or Handwriting Analysis is a science of interpreting a person's character from his/her personal handwriting.

Coupled with psychology and knowledge of human behavior, it can be used for many varied purposes. For example, Recruitment, Marriage compatibility, Career Guidance, Motivate workers, Child development etc.

Signature is not the best way to analyze character from handwriting , for several reasons.

Firstly, the Signature is sometimes illegible and different from the normal handwriting.

Secondly, the lone signature does not give enough words and letters to help the graphologist in his/her judgment. But signature samples do have certain advantage. Firstly they are easy to collect; even over long periods of time.

What is Graphoanalysis

• Graphoanalysis is a scientific system of identifyingand assessing the character and personality of anindividual through a study of handwriting. Thetechniques used are based on a well-defined,standardized method of:

– identifying strokes,

– relating these strokes to specific personality traits, and

– evaluating the relative strength of the interrelated traits.

OCR: Handwriting• For more than thirty years, researchers have

been working on handwriting recognition. • As in the case of speech processing, they

aimed at designing systems able to understand personal encoding of natural language

• Methods and recognition rates depend on the level of constraints on handwriting.

• The constraints are mainly characterized by the:– types of handwriting, – number of scriptors, – size of the vocabulary – spatial layout.
