HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE

COMBINATION OF YOUR

MAIN PRODUCT AND THE

ANCILLARY TASK?

Evaluation Two by Chyle Vailoces

As part of my A2 media coursework my task was to do a short film based on the sci-fi genre, self expressive

reflection of my creativity. I also did a film poster and a magazine article of the short film as the ancillary tasks,

both being promotional products for the short film.

For our film poster, we decided that a close up of the main antagonist was the best approach because I noticed that, from my research on sci-fi movie posters, the sub-genre of sci-fi that we’re focusing on have film posters that focus on the antagonist, and lightly hinting the narrative in an intriguing way. It promotes our short film; The colour blue on the font and the protagonist are the most prominent features

An example of this is my textual analysis of Terminator 3, where in the poster it has Arnold’s

face in the middle of the poster and a shadow cuts his face in half; one side is human, one side is

machine, connoting the narrative of the story and hinting to the audience that the character in the

poster is significant.

FILM POSTER

MAGAZINE ARTICLE

The magazine article features different shades of blue much like the film poster

and although a magazine article generally isnt a “direct product” from a film, I tried to add the elements which really represented

the thematic visuals present in our the short film; like the protagonist in a solid, “in action” stance, or the long shot showing off the expressions of the protagonist and the

environment he is in.

The majority of its design was inspired by Empire magazine which is a magazine

company that focuses on films, and as well as keeping in with the conventions found in films, I thought that taking inspiration from a magazine company that focused on the cinematic industry was fitting especially considering that it is magazine company

that does like to favour its sci-fi topics most of the time.

OUR SHORT FILM

The main product is the literal and visual representation of our approach to the sci-fi genre and in this short film, we used conventions that mirrored some modern full feature sci-fi films. Sticking to these conventions were paramount because to pull off a definitive sci-fi film, key aspects need to be considered, such as a recurring theme complied with fantasy concepts, enticing visuals and interesting characters. All of these aspects in some way were applied to the short film and in the end it was all done in a more personalised way.

Considering the amount of connotations we had in the short film, I feel as though both ancillary tasks were effective in promoting the main product. We were able to successfully take all the aspects from our short film that created its general outlook, and apply it into the ancillary tasks. Examples of these would be such as the colour blue, the simplicity of the designs and the way our protagonist was represented in both the ancilliary tasks and the main product.

From the exterior designs of our products that create the visual

representations of the sci-fi genre, to the deeper meanings and

connotations of the mainstream conventional sci-fi genre within the

interior design of the products; I think that all three products were

done well enough that they carried out their purposes and

complimented one another by showing the small links between

each product.
