HOW DOES PETROLEUM EFFECT THE GLOBALIZATION OF THE
UNITED STATES
By: Tony Huang, Greg McKinnon, and Nick DiNocco
What is Petroleum? Petroleum is another word for crude oil. This is
the the basic stage of what we know popularly as gasoline. In the phase of petroleum it is sedimentary bits found which consists of hydrocarbon and other compounds. It is also known as fossil fuel from the sediments found on the ocean bed that turned into oil.
The United States- 2005 - 2011 Pop: 292,936,105 311,237,427
-U.S is the largest energy consumer in the world. In 2005, 40% energy came from petroleum, 23%
coal, 23% natural gas, 8.4% nuclear, 7.3% renewable energy
Consumes 21million barrels/day Domestic productions at only 6million a day To import oil to US costs $410billion a year
Response By the U.S Carter Doctrine – document made by Jimmy Carter
that declared any interference with U.S interest in the Persian Gulf would be considered attack on the U.S.
During the Cold war Nixon tried to establish military aid with Saudi Arabia and Iran in exchange for their oil which did not go through.
More than 40 years ago, Libya had a military coup that overthrew the head of Libya and threw out all American and British troops out of the country. They demanded a higher increase for their oil. Libya once supplied 30% of Europe’s oil. Later on, the Middle East started following suit and demanded the same.
U.S Domestic Energy Policies
- eliminating oil from being used in electricity production, reducing our use of oil based electricity generators from 17% to less than 1%
- Automotive industry in America have tighten the strict fuel emission regulations with car brands producing gas guzzlers. Some places even have a CO2 emission law. This does not change the amount of mileage we drive or gas prices.
- U.S decreased its oil import by 7% thanks to the production and use of ethanol which is created in American farms.
Globalization - n -the process by which a company, etc,
expands to operate internationally
War Some people believe that since we can
not produce enough of our domestic oil for the country to use, we have to spend a lot more money on importing oil from the Middle East. This might be one reason why we are in a few of the wars. We recently attacked Libya where as Libya is a major oil contributor. After the turmoil in Libya, oil prices spiked. Some people find the oil is the cause of war, every country needs it but the U.S just needs it more.
