Gary and Kim are heavy drinkers and their relationship suffers because of
this.

Jack is an aggressive person, who becomes more aggressive the more he drinks.
Mel is a sexual predator who uses the fact that others have been drinking to manipulate them.
Mel and Jack are constantly trying to encourage others to drink a lot, and in fact they goad Gary throughout the drama to down his drinks in one go.
