Weed Competition
100% weed control is not practical 1st 4-6 weeks most important later emerging weeds usually do not cause
yield losses (harvest problems) all weeds are not created equal grasses more competitive than broadleaves

Herbicide Incorporation
or
* equally as effective* center-pivot irrigation (0.75’’) is $3-7/A cheaper!
mechanical irrigation

Consider Using Paraquat
less than $2.00/A if not using Valor or
Strongarm if beggarweed, sicklepod
and t. panicum are main problems
apply early
![Page 8: How do we manage weeds in $355/ton peanuts??? Eric P. Prostko Extension Weed Specialist University of Georgia Tifton.](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022070401/56649f1f5503460f94c37891/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Consider Using Cadre 50% price reductions in
2002 controls most weeds
except ragweed, croton, bristly starbur
Is it worth the rotational crop risk??
Use following paraquat, or Valor, or Strongarm

If you cannot use Cadre…...
weed control costs will probably be higher Dual Magnum ($10-14/A) but not as
effective. Older herbicides (Basagran, Blazer, Storm)
effective but have some weaknesses

What about dryland peanuts?
less reliable pray for rain still use DNA monitor weather if dry, do not use
anything else except POSTS
be ready to go when weeds are 2”

Reduced RatesDo they work???
![Page 13: How do we manage weeds in $355/ton peanuts??? Eric P. Prostko Extension Weed Specialist University of Georgia Tifton.](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022070401/56649f1f5503460f94c37891/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Reduced rates can work if……..
The weed is susceptible good growing/application conditions exist the application is timely (small weeds)
Full rates help to overcome variability of application due toweed size, improper sprayer calibration, environmental conditions, etc.

What kind of grower might consider using reduced rates?
regularly calibrates his sprayer has irrigation or can predict when it will rain gets consistent weed control at full rates understands the difference between 2” and 4” can cover his acreage in a short time period is willing to scout his field regularly is willing to accept less than 100% weed control is not a lawyer or close friends with one
A grower who ……...
