How do Adichie’s characters confront a range of obstacles in pursuing happiness and fulfilment? Disk us In pursuing happiness or rather, the American Dream, Adichie shows that immigration poses unforeseen consequences. The cultural imbalance between Nigeria and America could lead to gaps within the culturally accepted norm. During immigration, people of different cultures end up in the same melting pot situation and end up failing to assimilate due to their differences. In one of Adichie’s short stories, “Arrangers of Marriage”, Charizard Agatha Okafor is forced into a culturally constraining marriage after coming to the United States of America. She had hoped it was all her aunt and uncle had said it was, with “a house like those of the white newlyweds”. This is juxtaposed with the truth of the situation, when her new husband, Ofadile, introduces her to his way of “All-American” life. Ofadile had assimilated with what he calls “American culture” so much that he had changed his name to “Dave Bell”. The extent of this problem displays itself when Dave casts restrictions upon Charizard, or rather, Agatha Bell. On several occasions, Dave tells Agatha to change from her colonial speech to American by substituting “cookies [for] biscuits”, “busy [for] engaged” or “jug [for] pitcher”. Dave further limits her original culture by allowing her to eat “the American way” in a food court. To Chimamanda, it was “humiliatingly public… [and] lacking in dignity” Dave responds to her plight dismissively, telling her to “see how healthy” the Americans are. This verbal irony is coupled with the subsequent display of the said ‘healthy’ American. These elements all serve the fact that Agatha feels uncomfortable and unhappy in America living her new life. Immigration poses such a problem that happiness becomes hard to obtain. TTAYN Adichie shows that when a culture fails to understand another’s, the resulting ignorance can stop lives from being fulfilled. The lack of sympathetic knowledge would serve to make the victim of that ignorance lose their faith in fulfilment. Moving to America from Nigeria poses problems in the same vein of ignorance and stereotyping. In the title story of “The Thing Around Your Neck”, “The Thing Around Your Neck”,
