Coalition forces close air, sea, land access to YemenRiyadh

The Command of the Coalition in Support of

the Legitimacy in Yemen will temporarily close all air, land and sea ports to Yemen to stem the flow of arms to Houthi rebels from Iran, it said in a statement yesterday.

“The Coalition Forces Command decided to temporarily close all Yemeni air, sea and land ports,” the statement said, adding that aid workers and humanitarian supplies would continue to be able to access and exit Yemen.

The move follows the flagrant military aggression by the Iranian-controlled Houthi militias which targeted the city of Riyadh on Saturday using a ballistic missile with a range of more than 900 km.

Saudi Arabia and its Gulf Arab allies have made clear they view Iran as mainly responsible for the Yemen conflict.

“And, after the thorough examination of the debris of these missiles, including the missile launched on July 22 by experts in military technology, has confirmed the role of Iran’s regime in manufacturing these missiles and smuggling them to the Houthi militias in Yemen for the purpose of attacking the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, its people, and vital interests.”

“The Coalition’s command considers the Iranian regime’s action in supplying the Houthi militias that it commands with these missiles to be a blatant violation of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Resolutions that prohibit nations from arming these militias, specifically UNSC Resolution (2216).

Further, Iran’s role and its

direct command of its Houthi proxy in this matter constitutes a clear act of aggression that targets neighboring countries, and threatens peace and security in the region and globally.”

Iran real dangerSaudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir said on his Twitter account on Monday that his country reserved the right to respond to what he called Iran’s “hostile actions”.

Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Sheikh Khaled bin Ahmed al-Khalifa also tweeted that Iran was the real danger to the region.

On Sunday the coalition accused the Houthis of

“dangerous escalation (which) came because of Iranian support” after Saudi air defences intercepted the ballistic missile heading towards Riyadh. It was brought down near Riyadh airport without causing any casualties.

“Therefore, the Coalition’s Command considers this a blatant act of military aggression by the Iranian regime, and could rise to be considered as an act of war against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and thus affirms the legitimate right of the Kingdom to defend its territory and people in accordance with Article (51) of the U.N. Charter.”

“The Coalition Command

also affirms that the Kingdom reserves its right to respond to Iran in the appropriate time and manner, in accordance with international law and based upon the right of self-defense, including the defense of its territory, its people, and its vital interests, which is enshrined in international agreements and conventions including the UN Charter.”

“To address the vulnerabilities in the current inspection procedures that led to the continuation of the supply of ballistic missiles and military equipment to the Houthi militias which enabled them to continue to commit crimes against the Kingdom, the Yemeni

people, and the peoples of countries in the region, which constitutes blatant violations to international humanitarian laws, the Coalition’s Command has decided to temporarily close all Yemeni ground, air, and sea ports. These measures will be implemented while taking into consideration the continuation of the entry and exit of humanitarian supplies and crews in accordance with the Coalition’s updated procedures.”

“The Coalition Command calls upon all relevant parties to adhere to the inspections, entry, and exit procedures to and from Yemeni ports of entry designated by the Coalition that will be announced later.”

“All necessary legal steps will be taken against violators of these procedures. The Coalition Command calls upon the brethren Yemeni people and all civilian and humanitarian crews to avoid areas of combat operations, areas populated by the Houthi armed militia, areas and ports exploited by this Iranian-controlled militia to smuggle weapons, and areas from which this militia launch its attacks against the Kingdom. The Coalition also calls upon diplomatic missions to avoid areas that are not controlled by the Legitimate Government of Yemen.”

“The Coalition Command calls upon the international community and the United Nations Security Council including the sanctions committee established by the Council for the implementation of UNSC Resolution 2216, to take all necessary legal measures to hold Iran accountable for its violation of UN Security Council Resolutions, primarily resolution 2216, in addition to its violations of provisions and principles of international law that criminalize the aggression against other states, due to: Iran’s direct involvement in the unlawful smuggling of weapons to the Houthi Militia under its control, which threatens international peace and security; its aggression against the territory and people of Saudi Arabia and other neighboring countries; and its continued support for the Houthi militia in violation of international resolutions that aim to restore legitimacy in Yemen,” Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

Saudi Prince, 7 others killed in copter crashContinued from Page 1

In a statement posted on SPA, the Royal Court said that the funeral prayer will be

performed tomorrow after Asr prayer at Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh.

Prince Mansour was the son of Prince Muqrin bin Abdulaziz, a former intelligence service director and a one-time crown prince of the Kingdom. Prince Muqrin was removed as crown prince in April 2015 by his half brother Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz in favour of Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, former interior minister.

But in June, Prince Mohammed was replaced by the King in favour of the now-Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, as first in line to the throne.

The helicopter crash also comes after Saudi Arabia on Saturday intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile near Riyadh’s international airport after it was fired from Yemen in an escalation of the kingdom’s war against Iran-backed Huthi rebels.

In Yemen, Houthi officials offered no immediate comment on the crash, while its Al-Masirah satellite news channel reported only that the crash had occurred.

Govt mulls strict action against spitting in publicDT News [email protected]

Manama

The government is planning to take stern measures

against those who spit in public, it was announced yesterday.

“A law to punish the people who spit on streets and public places should be enacted,” it was recommended at a meeting of the Capital Governorate Council yesterday.

During the meeting, the Capital Governorate Coordination Council recommended that such steps should be taken, especially in the Old Manama Market (Suq)

area, where this phenomenon is noticeably increasing despite the launch of multiple awareness campaigns to

prevent it. T h e c o u n c i l ’ s

recommendation followed the review of a presentation

that reflected the deteriorated hygiene in Bab Al Bahrain and the old market areas, in addition to the frequent

complaints received from tourists regarding the same issue.

The meeting was chaired by the Governor of the Capital Governorate Shaikh Hisham bin Abdulrahman Al Khalifa in the presence of Government officials and representatives.

DT News reported earlier this year that House of Representatives’ members passed a bill to toughen penalties against hygienic violations, introducing penalties of BD50-100 for urinating in public and BD20-50 for spitting or washing vehicles in not-designated areas.

Girl abducted, releasedCulprit confessed to crime, booked

DT News [email protected]

A 22-year-old man who allegedly kidnapped an

eight-year-old girl has been charged by the police for the crime.

The man abducted the young girl while she was standing in-front of her home in Budaiya along with her friend. Police were soon alerted by her father and a team of officers were tasked to follow up investigations. The man reportedly bought the girl new clothes and asked her to change into them.

According to details revealed by the Ministry of Interior in its publication Al Amn, fingernail scratches were found on the girls left hand and right

thigh. The girl was reportedly blindfolded and hit when she protested.

The abductor later became worried and sent her back to her parents with the help of a friend. Head of investigation at the Northern Governerate Police Directorate Captain Turki Al Majid said that a CCTV footage had captured the man’s red vehicle.

“A search team was formed to collect all evidence and investigate the incident. The team began searching all red vehicles and all those who were driving such vehicles were questioned. The traffic department was contacted to get details of all similar vehicles that met all its specifications and distinctive signs,” he

said. Officers realized that the vehicle was rented from a rental company.

“It was then easy to get the contact details, including phone number and the address, of the person who had hired the vehicle,” he added

The suspect initially denied any wrong doing but later confessed to the kidnap. He said that he was under the influence of drugs at the time of the crime. He added that he asked the girl to change her clothes as the clothes she was wearing had his fingerprints on them. A friend of the suspect dropped the girl near her home. As she walked back home she was found by her father and a group of people who was searching for her.

By Invitation

It is important to build into the strategy of every corporate board the critical role that Chief Information Officers can

take in order to support the business objectives through technology. This will mean to translate the business objectives into IT-specific objectives owned by the CIOs. These will in turn help the corporate to achieve their goals. As any organization, the business requirements are dynamic and change rapidly based on the market fluctuations, and IT must always be very agile to respond quickly to business changes. Hence, a close interaction and collaboration with the board members and other chiefs is vital.

Chief Information Officers face many challenges and obstacles. Technology is advancing exponentially while Chief Information Officers thrive to deliver value by ultimately facilitating the business requirements and needs, operating at multiple speeds and ‘keeping up with the pace’ is quite challenging. Not any new technology is worth spending time, effort and money on. The challenge is how to assess the potential business benefits of those new trends without wasting time or effort, and how to make the right decision on any specific technology with guaranteed benefits. Another challenge is bridging the gap between technology and business users; how to apply innovative technology for real-life business applications and how to translate the technology to direct users’ benefits.

The role of the Chief Information Officer is influenced by the industry, and as an example, the aviation and airline industry depends heavily on IT, complex business processes, sales and distribution channels, and flight operations hinge on IT services and solutions. Chief Information Officers need to know that aspect of the business to be able to bring ideas and initiatives on how technology can help in increasing ticket sales and reach wider audience through direct channels and through mobiles, and how to optimize flight operations and reduce fuel burns with automatic flight plans creation, the opportunities are endless. The IT services required by airlines are unique and specific for this industry, and the Chief Information Officers must be well versed in the business sides to ensure successful deployment and guaranteeing return on investments.

There are currently many IT trends that big potential and high impact on the aviation industry, Chief Information Officers must keep a close watch on them. Complex and manual business processes are transformed to be carried in mobile devices and tablets. A prominent example is electronic flight bag on tablets to replace heavy paper-based bags used by pilots, using tablets by crew to offer personalized services to the passengers, and aircraft engineers using tablets for performing aircrafts checks, maintenance and inspections. Big data has revolutionized how the market and demands are estimated, now airlines can monitor the market and identify early any shift in demands and monitor passengers’ feedback. And cloud computing has spread through all airports and sales outlets to create a global hybrid cloud that helped airlines to establish connectivity and offer services to their staff in different geographical locations. Another trend is using Internet of Things on aircrafts to optimize flights operations and establishing aircraft connectivity while on air which will enhance operations, flight control and safety.

On a last note, a simple advice to Chief Information Officers. Voice your concern to the other chiefs, and participate in establishing initiatives while taking in consideration the organization’s mission. Chief Information Officers must speak in the same language and wavelength that the C-suite and business understand. Chief Information Officers must cater to the ever-changing and dynamic business requirements and needs, and respond rapidly with agility to keep up with the pace of the business. Not doing so may put any organization in a situation referred to as “Shadow IT”, where IT solutions are built and deployed by other units that do not adhere to the IT policies and procedures, resulting in problematic “stealth” solutions without proper support.

DT News NetworkManama

The Cabinet meeting chaired by Deputy Premier, His

Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Khalifa at the Gudaibiya Palace yesterday strongly condemned the Houthi militia’s missile attack, targeting populated areas in Riyadh.

“Such heinous crimes contravene all religions, exposing the Houthis and the serious threat they pose for the region,” said the Deputy Premier.

The Cabinet praised the efficiency of the Saudi air defences for their success in intercepting the ballistic missile without causing any damages. The Cabinet reiterated Bahrain’s solidarity and full-fledged support to Saudi Arabia for its efforts to maintain security and stability in the face of such abhorrent acts.

The Cabinet backed the steps taken by Saudi Arabia to combat terrorism in Yemen and the cash rewards announced to arrest those responsible for planning and carrying out the Houthis’ terror activities.

The Deputy Premier lauded the directives issued by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa while chairing last week’s Cabinet Session. The royal directives reflected HM the King’s firmness in dealing with Qatar, the Cabinet said.

The session also discussed a number of events hosted by the kingdom recently.

Traffic jamsThe deputy premier gave directives to find immediate solutions to avert the recurrence of the heavy traffic jams on the Bahraini side of the King Fahad Causeway recently, as well as

to reduce the waiting time, especially during weekends and official holidays.

Commenting on a presentation by the Interior Minister on the administrative and technical procedures taken to address the density of passengers on the King Fahad Causeway during special occasions and official holidays, the deputy premier urged the authorities to develop short and long-term solutions to ease traffic there, avoid the crowding of cars, spare families and individuals and make sure that the interests of travelers are not disrupted.

Entrepreneurship Award shaping economic future: Tamkeen chiefDT News NetworkManama

The Bahrain Award for Entrepreneurship is

shaping a bright economic future for the Kingdom, the Chief Executive of Tamkeen, Dr. Ebrahim Janahi has said.

“Tamkeen has effectively played a positive role in developing this vibrant sector. The contribution of the business sector to the local economy has reached more than BD800 million. Tamkeen has supported more than 35,000 institutions and has trained 95,000 Bahraini nationals,” said Dr. Ebrahim Janahi. The third-edition of the Bahrain Award for Entrepreneurship will be held under the patronage of His

Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and Chairman of the Economic Development Board.“Start-ups make 60%

of the projects supported by Tamkeen through its Enterprise Support Scheme. This is a true testament that more Bahraini nationals are opting to start their own businesses and

contribute to the growth of the economy,” he said.

“In a recent study conducted by EY, 70% of the youth are interested in establishing their own businesses. This confirms Tamkeen’s efforts to increase its awareness efforts among the youth and encourage them to take entrepreneurship as an alternative to employment,” he added.

Organized by Tamkeen, the event is held in association with the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Economic Development Board, Bahrain Development Bank, the Bahrain Chamber of Industry and Commerce and Arab International Centre for Entrepreneurship and Investment region.

The Cabinet approved, based on a recommendation by the Executive Committee, chaired by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Prime Minister, a plan to ease procedures of the Tender Board, making them more flexible through utilising technology. Under the plan, all the transactions of the Tender Board will be carried out electronically to facilitate the search and classification of tenders, and provide updated lists of approved importers and contractors. The plan also stipulates that all the fees levied on the documents of the tenders will be conducted centrally by the Tender Board. The tenders will also be announced through the Tender Board. The session also endorsed a plan to restructure the Tender Board.

The Water Garden, one of the main public parks in

Salmaniya area which was shut for renovations last March, is not opened yet, leaving the local residents completely in

the lurch.The public park used

to serve as a prominent community space for a lot of residents and children in the area. With the closure of the park, local people have no space for recreation, especially for women and children.

“With houses being so

cramped in the Capital, the park served as the only space for residents in the neighbourhood to take the children out in the open to play but with the main public garden being shut for months there is no community space for our kids anymore,” a resident said.

“There is no space for us to go for our evening walks anymore. We can’t let our kids go out and play on the streets. We have observed that the park has just been left abandoned with no renovations happening,” said another resident adding: “We urge the officials to re-open

the park at least until the renovation are resumed so that there is at least a space for the community.”

DT News did contact the officials of the Capital Municipal Council and is awaiting the response of the officials on the matter concerning the residents in the Capital.

DT News had previously reported on how Water Garden would be given a major facelift as announced by Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry in March, with Minister Essam Khalaf stating that the garden has been temporarily shut down till works are completed.

DT News: Your Excellency, as the rainy season approaches, some may have concerns about the accumula-tion and drainage of rainwater. What are the ministry’s plans this year to tackle the recurring rainwater flooding issue?

Eng. Khalaf: The ministry deals with the sewerage networks as a top priority, as it has several hazardous and direct effects on the public’s safety, in regards to the environment and health.

But this doesn’t mean that efforts are not being taken to solve the rainwater accumulation issue. Over the years, we have created a map of the water accumulation areas following each rainy season, so we would have a clearer work plan to deal with this matter ahead of the next season. Around 1, 000 sites were detected last year and they were dealt with efficiently.

The ministry worked on establishing bundles of limited rainwater drainage networks. Tenders were offered to construct each bun-dle of networks in different areas, making it easier to control them.

Construction of half of these bundles was completed. However, establishing such networks may be a difficult task in some areas, depending on its capacity. Therefore, we have installed huge underground containers to collect the excessive rainwater on the roads and discharge it later.

These containers are known as holding tanks. The sizes of these tanks depend on the availability of underground space, as other buried infrastructural facilities and pipes limit the sizes of holding tanks. In some areas, 1,000 m3 tanks are required, while the available space only allows to fit 500 m3 tanks or less. This is one of the difficulties we are facing.

On the bright side, this method was proven successful in many sites, such as the parking spaces of Sabeeka Al Ansari Mosque in Isa Town, to mention an example of its efficiency. The ministry successfully coordinated with the Sunni Endowments Directorate in Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments Ministry to implement the project on this site, eradicating the repeated rainwater flooding issue in the area once and for all.

Additionally, the holding tanks technique is much cheaper than the rainwater drainage networks, which require pumps, pipes and other costly equipment. The holding tanks are eco-nomical and very efficient in dealing with reasonable amounts of rainwater. But, in case of heavy downpours, these tanks may get filled to capacity and the accumulated water would resur-face to the roads, requiring additional efforts.

DT News: Does the ministry have any plans to benefit from or recycle the excavated rainwater?

Eng. Khalaf: The storm water is usually discharged in the sea and other areas. We had attempted to inject it in the under-ground water in a couple of sites across the Kingdom. But recycling also is only done if strict rules are followed. The Supreme Council for the Environment had some environ-mental reservations in regards to this process as they had some concerns over water pollution suspicions, hence the processes were stopped and further discussions are in progress. But, we utilise it in irrigation purposes.

We have more work and effort to be implemented in the field of rainwater drainage and recycling. Yet, we have managed to considerably reduce the negative effects of this issue on the

public by taking the necessary precautionary measures and procedures ahead of the rainy season.

The ministry has offered more tenders to provide tanks and containers to excavate the excessive water from roads and public areas. We have also upgraded the vacuum tankers and provided them with additional pumps to accelerate the process of excavating the water, that’s in addition to installing pumps at vital areas and roads to move the water to open areas and ensure that the daily life isn’t affected.

T he progress of a country is often judged by the changing landscape and cityscape which tells the story of sound urban planning and

also of development. As the Kingdom of Bahrain continues to grow and spread its wings under the rule of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, positioning itself among the fastest growing countries in the world in the past two decades, the responsibility of ensuring that the Kingdom keeps pace with proper infrastructure comes under the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning, headed by Minister Engineer Essam Khalaf.

In an interview with DT News, the Minister outlined his team’s work for tackling the recurrent problem of rainwater flooding in the winter months and what the growing traffic patterns mean and new road networks being built to cope with Bahrain’s growth. Huge budgets have been allocated to ensure the smooth development and plenty of effort and thought has been poured into the process.

DT News: What are the main challenges the ministry is facing in tackling the rainwater flooding issue?

Eng. Khalaf: One of the biggest challenges we face during the rainy seasons is the uncivil behaviour of some people who remove the covers of sewage manholes and allow the rainwa-ter to enter and mix with the sewerage network.

This is a grave matter as such behaviour disrupts and dam-ages the networks. The rainwater, with all its sediments, damages the pumps and other equipment of the sewerage network. This results in the rebound of the sewerage inside homes and other facilities. Such cases were reported recently, as the pumps were damaged and unable to move the sewer-age to the treatment plant. We repeatedly warn the public of the dangerous effects of such behaviours by raising more awareness on the matter through different platforms.

It’s noteworthy that we have also fulfilled all the requests that were received by municipal councils from citizens this year to install rainwater roof coatings to prevent any leakages inside homes, especially those belonging to the limited and medium income citizens.

DT News: What are the efforts taken to reduce the increasing traffic congestions on the Kingdom’s roads?

Eng. Khalaf: The infrastructure and urban growth is notice-ably expanding in the country. The growing economy and the numbers of construction permits being issued is also rising. Of course all of these factors increase the pace of transporta-tion, reflected in the growing numbers of vehicles on the roads.

In Bahrain, we have an annual growth in traffic movement of five to seven percent. The ministry is working on developing a network of strategic roads and a number of big projects are underway. They’re mostly funded either through the state budget or the GCC Marshall Plan.

The in-hand projects are worth around USD1.2 billion, but they require time to be completed. For this reason, as directed by the Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First

Deputy Prime Minister HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the ministry has adopted a plan to implement smaller projects that have a visible impact on the alleviation of the traffic congestions issue.

We have commenced executing these projects on several stages. The first stage includes 11 projects to open new entries, exits and intersections. Eight of them were recently completed in all four governorates. This plan received a positive interac-tion from motorists as it effectively contributed to the reduc-tion of traffic jams.

The second stage of the plan will include 16 projects that will be soon announced.

DT News: As we speak about traffic jams, what is the work progress of the much-anticipated fourth bridge connecting Manama and Muharraq?

Eng. Khalaf: This is one of the most prominent projects being currently implemented by the ministry and is financed by the GCC Marshall Plan. It is part of the Muharraq Ring Road project and connects the northern parts of the Capital, Bahrain Bay and Busaiteen reaching to Diyar Al Muharraq.

We have set a budget of USD250 million for the project. Tenders have been offered for the reclamation process and it’s currently in the evaluation phase. We are hoping that the tender for the construction process would be offered by the first half of 2018.

A state-of-the-art design has been approved by the Prime Minister HRH Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa. The project would be ready by the year 2020.

With enough contributions, the map could tell exactly when and where the most dangerous species of mosquitoes are most likely to be pre-sent and that could lead to highly targetted and efficient control efforts, helping fight mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue and malaria.

The Prakash Lab at Stanford wants citizen scientists to contribute to Abuzz, a mos-quito monitoring platform the lab developed to produce the map of mosquito distribution.

8 Contributing to this research is as simple as holding a cellphone microphone near a mos-quito, recording its hum as it flies and uploading the recording to the Abuzz website.8 The researchers take the raw signal, clean up that audio to reduce background noise and run it through an algorithm that matches that par-ticular buzz with the species that is most likely to have produced it.8 Once the match is found, the researchers would send the person who submitted the recording information about the mosquito they found and mark every recording on a map on the website, showing exactly where and when that mosquito species was sighted.

Trafco Group’s Board of Directors at its meeting

yesterday discussed the financials for the 3rd quarter of 2017 that was reviewed by external Auditors Earnest & Young.

Ebrahim Zainal, chairman of the Board, declared a net profit for the 9 months of 2017 to stand at BD 1.35 million slightly over the BD 1.33mn of last year for the same period - despite a decline by 3% in total sales from BD 31mn to BD 30mn this year.

The general price retreat in major commodities and a revision in policy of imports in certain branches to boost profitability were major reasons for the retreat.

In the 3rd quarter of this financial year, the Group made a net profit of about BD 216K Compared to BD 342K for last year same period - a 37 per cent decline. Drop in return on investment portfolio and losses in a sister company were the major

reasons. Total sales in the 3rd quarter stood at BD 9.9mn lower by only 2pc from last year’s same period sales of BD 10.1mn.

The Group CEO S. Sridhar stated that the decline in total sales of parent company during the period was partially due to general international price decline in main food items that the Group deals in like frozen chicken.

On the other hand, a change in policy of importing fresh fruits & vegetables in the Group’s branch at central market resulted in volume

decline and this policy was adopted to concentrate more on items with better margin. As a whole, the total decline in sales value was nominal as some other subsidiaries did better which reflected positively on the consolidated figures.

Awal Dairy company, a subsidiary had a very good third quarter sales and this year it achieved the highest total sales in comparison with sales in the last 5 years. Thanks to its aggressive marketing, it managed to obtain private label contracts for several major international

companies in the area and its products under third party brands will be noticed in many markets and outlets in the next few months, alongside its own brands that are well being marketed locally and in Kuwait through its wholly owned subsidiary.

With regard to Bahrain Livestock Co. (BLSC), a sister company of the Group, the losses have continued for the third quarter mainly because of a general change in the meat trade to chilled and frozen meat, and tough competition from new operators.

Our wholly owned company Bahrain Water Bottling continued its growth in sales of bottled water and had a profitable 3rd quarter sales.

Trafco Logistics, another wholly owned subsidiary also had a very good year and with increased demand for storage and other logistics services, maintained its share of the market and built up on profitability.

Paradise Papers expose tax haven secrets

London

A huge new leak of financial documents has revealed

how the powerful and ultra-wealthy, including Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II’s private estate, secretly invest vast amounts of cash in offshore tax havens, media reports said.

The details come from a leak of 13.4 million files on Sunday that expose the global environments in which tax abuses can thrive - and the complex and seemingly artificial ways the wealthiest corporations can legally protect their wealth.

The material, which has come from two offshore service providers and the company registries of 19 tax havens, was obtained by the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung and shared by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) with 100 other media organisations including the Guardian, the BBC and The New York Times.

Some of the revelations in the Paradise Papers include

millions of pounds from Queen Elizabeth II’s private estate that has been invested in a Cayman Islands fund and some of her money that went to a retailer accused of exploiting poor families and vulnerable people.

It details extensive offshore dealings by US President Donald Trump’s cabinet members, advisers and donors, including substantial payments from a firm co-owned by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s son-in-law to the shipping group of the US Commerce Secretary, Wilbur Ross.

The leak shows how social media giants Twitter and Facebook received millions in investments that can be traced back to Russian state financial institutions along with aggressive tax avoidance by multinational corporations, including Nike and Apple.

It also includes information about a tax-avoiding Cayman Islands trust managed by the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s chief wealth manager. (IANS)

Investors are reacting badly to the arrest of Saudi

billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, one of the world’s wealthiest men.

Shares of Kingdom Holding, Prince Alwaleed’s investment vehicle, sank for a second day after the chairman was targeted in an anti-corruption sweep.

The billionaire was one of 11 princes arrested by a new anti-corruption body headed by the Saudi Crown Prince.

Prince Alwaleed holds shares in Citigroup, Twitter and Apple.

“From a sentiment perspective, this will hurt the businesses associated with the prince,” said Nabil Rantisi, the managing director of brokerage at Menacorp, a United Arab Emirates investment firm.

“Major investors may shy away from these companies for a while until they have more clarity on the outcome of the situation”.

Analysts are speculating that 32-year-old Mohammed bin Salman, heir apparent to the Saudi throne, is consolidating power and asserting his control over the oil-rich kingdom.

The sizes of Prince Alwaleed’s holdings in Twitter and Apple have not been disclosed by Kingdom Holding as he has been secretive about his international investments over the years.

Among the prince’s other global holdings is Citigroup, in which he has owned shares since 1991, mass media corporation Twenty-First Century Fox and ride-sharing firm Lyft. The prince

also owns the majority of Rotana Group, the Arab world’s largest entertainment company, and London’s Savoy hotel.

Over the weekend, security forces arrested dozens of former top officials and ministers within hours after King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud’s decision to crack down on corruption.

Prince Alwaleed’s whereabouts are currently unknown. Some of the detainees are being held at five-star hotels across Riyadh, the Associated Press reported, citing a Saudi official.

Saudi Arabia’s finance ministry has said “firm decisions” by the anti-corruption committee will “help to reinforce the investment environment in the kingdom”. (BBC)

Buying by government-linked funds supported

Saudi Arabia’s stock market yesterday, asset managers said, but most other Gulf bourses fell as the Saudi crackdown on corruption sent shivers through the region.

After falling in early trade, Riyadh’s index rebounded in the closing minutes to finish 0.1 per cent higher in active trade - repeating its pattern on Sunday, when it ended up 0.3pc after an early tumble.

Several regional fund managers said they believed Saudi state-linked funds were deliberately supporting the market to prevent a panic after a new anti-corruption committee detained dozens of leading political and business figures.

Although many investors think the crackdown could be positive for Saudi Arabia in the long run, by addressing a longstanding problem and increasing the power of reformist Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, there are fears that people implicated may be forced to liquidate their investments.

Al Tayyar Travel plunged its 10-percent daily limit after the company quoted media reports as saying its founder Nasser bin Aqeel al-Tayyar,

who holds direct and indirect stakes totalling 29.72pc in the firm, was being held in the probe.

Kingdom Holding, which had tumbled 7.6pc on Sunday after its billionaire chairman Prince Alwaleed bin Talal was detained, sank a further 5.3pc. National Industrialization Co (Tasnee), in which Kingdom holds a 6.2pc stake, fell 1.2pc.

After the close on Sunday, Kingdom said it had the support of the Saudi government, and its share price is now close to the company’s book value as of June 30.

But the anti-corruption committee has the power to seize assets at home and

abroad before the results of its investigations are known, so investors worry that significant amounts of wealth could disappear from the market.

Declining stocks outnumbered gainers by 135 to 42. Among the gainers were state-linked firms expected to play key roles in Prince Mohammed’s economic development plans, such as National Commercial Bank, up 2.9pc.

Other Gulf markets dropped as jittery retail investors sold stocks because of the uncertainty in Saudi Arabia, said Shakeel Sarwar, head of asset management at Securities & Investment Co

(SICO) in Bahrain. However, some other fund

managers said there could be a chilling effect on Gulf bourses in general if investment flows from Saudi Arabia shrank because of the crackdown, or if Saudi investors were forced to repatriate funds.

Saudis are estimated to own several per cent of some Gulf stock markets, and are significant investors in some Gulf real estate markets. They traded 12.5 billion riyals ($3.4bn) of Dubai property in the 18 months through June, according to official Dubai data.

Dubai’s stock index sank 1.2pc yesterday as high-end developer Emaar Properties dropped 1.8pc and DAMAC Properties lost 2.0pc.

Abu Dhabi’s index sagged 0.4pc as Aldar Properties fell 2.2pc. Qatar dropped 1.4pc as Qatar International Islamic Bank slid 3.4pc in its heaviest trade for several months.

In Kuwait, blue chips fell sharply in what analysts said was profit-taking after sharp rises early this year on the back of expectations for index compiler FTSE Russell to upgrade the country to emerging market status.

The Koenigsegg Agera RS has been crowned as the fastest car ever

after clocking 277mph.The Swedish supercar topped the Bugatti

Veyron’s 267mph world record - and even beat the Hennessey Venom GT’s unofficial 271mph.

The £1.5million Agera RS maxed out at 272mph and 284mph on its two runs with the average topping the old record by 10mph.

The attempt was completed on an 11-mile closed public road near Las Vegas with factory driver Niklas Lilja at the wheel.

The on-board footage, courtesy of RaceLogic, shows the terrifying speed direct from the cockpit with the outside hurtling past.

Niklas takes it easy at first, gradually building up speed to avoid overworking the tyres and making sure the car is fully planted, before unleashing the full power of the 5.0-litre V8.

And the supercar could go even quicker if it gets new tyres to handle the extreme heat and pressures needed to cope with the speed.

The world record attempt was completed on Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres that a regular punter can buy online.

It’s the second time in as many months that Koenigsegg has topped Bugatti - stealing its 0-400-0 record by five seconds in October.

The £2million Chiron is now being lined up to take back the top speed world record for Bugatti.

But both might have to keep an eye in the rear view mirror with the new Hennessey Venom F5 recently revealed.

The previous Venom GT clocked a 270mph top speed back in 2014 - but only did it in one direction meaning it never classified as an official record.

The F5 is tipped to be the first production car to hit 300mph.For petrolheads, this is a great time to be alive. (The Sun)

Tuesday, November 7, 2017 11The end of an era is almost upon us, as the Mercedes-

We’ve already seen the Final Edition of the top-of-the-line Mercedes-AMG G65; now Daimler’s applying a similar treatment to (relatively) more accessibly models.

Available in Europe on the G350d, G350d Professional, and G500, the new Limited Editions feature special paint, trim, equipment, and of course, special badges. (carscoops)

categories by the design team; Functional Standards, Modern Classics, and Revolutionary Design DNA. Although the Dyna line has been discontinued (at least for now), a few Dyna models have been reborn as Softails.

Commenting on the new models, Dave Foley, vice president of Product Planning and Portfolio Management, Harley-Davidson Motor Company said, “Our new Touring motorcycles will be some of our most sought-after bikes in 2018. For CVO, we’ve rebooted the styling tone of the overall lineup and added some exclusive performance enhancements.”

Meanwhile, Brad Richards, Vice President of Styling and Design, Harley-Davidson Motor Company further added: “Dave’s right. The new direction our Styling department took with the design formula on the bikes is truly seismic.”

He says it would take an exciting script for him to sign on for a new movie these days, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

Actor-screenwriter Justin Theroux has fired back at his New York neighbour who has sued him over home renovations. Theroux

claims the person is only covering up his own domestic issues.

Theroux filed a response to the lawsuit, saying Norman Resnicow’s demand for the actor to

install expensive soundproofing had nothing to do with the noise in Theroux’s apartment, reports tmz.com.

Instead, Theroux says his neighbour was trying to conceal his own “volcanic and abusive outbursts emanating from inside his apartment”. He added that the police had been called more than once to Resnicow’s place over the noise.

Theroux is also not keen to get complaints about his dog either. (IANS)

Singer-songwriter Nicole Scherzinger says at a time when the music industry is “over-saturated”, it’s vital to stand out with authenticity in one’s work.

The singer, who rose to fame as part of The Pussycat Dolls, spoke to Britain’s OK! Magazine, about her learnings, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

“I’ve become more relaxed about things, that’s for sure. I’ve learnt that it’s important to be authentic because that’s what separates you from everyone else. That’s one of the reasons I’m taking so much time to release new music. It has to come

from a truthful and honest place because the industry is so over-saturated at the moment,” she said. (IANS)

Actress Mila Kunis says “A Bad Moms Christmas” is not a crazy story, but a true account of what every mother and father goes through every year during Christmas

celebrations.“’A Bad Moms Christmas’ is everyone’s Christmas. It’s just

what everybody goes through every year in Christmas. It’s not hokey pokey, there’s no crazy story, in laws coming. It’s just what we as women and what my dad have to deal with during these 6 days leading upto Christmas. These are hell of getting Christmas perfect and magical,” Kunis said in a statement.

“A Bad Moms Christmas” is a sequel of “Bad Moms”, which had challenged the “perfect mother” stereotype in a fun way and was a huge success last year. (IANS)

Actor Kate Winslet said she does not want to quit actingever and will keep working in films till life allows her

to. The 42-year-old star, however, said to maintain a long career it is important for her to be complacent.

Winslet said, “I don’t want to be a person who won an Oscar and then disappeared off the face of the Earth. I want to be the person still here acting their socks off aged 90. And you don’t get there by being complacent.”

The actor said she is happy with the kind of work she is being offered. “I don’t mind being 42 and not 22. I’m honestly OK not being sent scripts anymore where the main requirement is to be easy on the eye. I’m loving playing women who are more worn-in because of life experience. And it takes away the pressure of needing to conform,” she said. (TOI)

FUEGO: ANTONIO GADES COMPANYDate : 1 December 2017, 8:00pmVenue : Bahrain National TheatreThe Antonio Gades Company, a major pillar of Spanish flamenco dance, will be presenting “Fuego”, which is inspired by the work of the late Spanish legendary composer, Manuel de Falla. The plot, choreography and lighting made by the late Antonio Gades and the Spanish film director, photographer and writer Carlos Saura. Coinciding with the tenth anniversary of the death of Antonio Gades, the foundation that carries his name decided to under-take a very significant challenge setting up another version of the Manuel de Falla’s ballet “Enchanted Love”. Titled “Fuego”, this production was the sec-ond scenic interpretation which the choreographer had of Manuel de Falla’s work. Being an exponent of Gades’ core idea “return to tradition if you want to evolve”, this ballet is a transi-tional piece between the almost mythi-cal setups in the classic plays, Carmen and Fuenteovejuna. It was also the last of the joint mythical flamenco works by Gades and Saura, with the same overlaying structure they followed in Carmen, first as a film and secondly as a ballet.

“HOUE”Date : Till 31 December 2017, 8:00am - 8:00pmVenue : Bahrain National Theatre The Bahrain National Theatre will host the “HOUE” installation by French-Iraqi artist Mehdi Moutashar. The HOUE installation will be exhibited at the Theatre’s foyer, allowing the visitors to directly interact with it. “Houé” is an Arabic word formed from two letters: an aerial letter, the aspired ‘h’, developed from a double move-ment – concentric and eccentric, and

the waw (O) which follows a helical layout. A back and forth movement similar to breathing is born from the entanglement of these two letters; the first as a breath, the second as an instrument. Houe literally means “the other, him, the one who reflects my image and confirms my humanity”. It is also the root of the word identity, but beyond this first meaning, Houé (Him) is the name used by mystics to signify God. Houé’s calligraphic from, written from right to left using a qalam, a sharpened dried reed filled with ink, starts with a thick, intense, black line and narrows towards the end like a hair. The material shape of the lines forming these three successive angles complies with this logic, as does the general structure: the beginning of the second angle appears halfway along the first, the third starts halfway along the sec-ond… So it is the construction in its entirety which results from the logic underpinning it. In this respect, its development in space clearly refers to the concept of the arabesque, to that essential idea that painting, sculpture and architecture all stem from a single measurement. While the different levels that this work introduces subtly match those of the human body: the lines of the knees, the core and the solar plexus…

Mehdi Moutashar was born in Hilla, Iraq in 1943. He moved to Paris in 1967, and since 1974, has lived and worked in Arles. He was a professor at Ecole National Superieure des Arts Decorantifs in Paris, from 1974 to 2008. Moutashar’s work has been exhibited globally, in such countries as Bahrain, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany Iraq, Italy, Japan, Lebanon, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, the UAE, and the US.

You might be jumping around today. This is one of those situations in which you don’t want to stay in one place for too long. Each place is an individual step that leads to where you want to go. Keep your eyes focused ahead and keep on going. Stagnating will leave you lost in the middle of nowhere.

Your audience will be attentive to you today. Take the lead and others will follow. Be yourself and project your voice into the auditorium of eager listeners. Information will flow freely, and you shouldn’t discount any ideas from the peanut gallery. Be open to questions and comments from others. Their participation is vital to your performance. You could feel confident today, and you should have a strong idea of exactly what it is you want. Information is power. Others are working to wield power over you. Don’t let them get away with it, especially today. Encourage synergistic behaviour among all parties. You can accomplish a great deal by working together.

Your mind will expand today. You’ll feel like there’s a ton of information crammed into your head that needs processing. Regarding big projects, try to finish them as quickly as you can. The best policy is to pace yourself. If you wait until the last minute to finish, the quality of your work will suffer. Make a plan and maybe even a timeline. Set small deadlines as you go along.

Try not to read too much into other people’s words today. You may have spent hours tearing apart every off-the-cuff remark. You may build up a wild scenario in your head regarding what that person is thinking. Instead of trying to sneak up on the answer through the back door, try the direct approach. Simply ask your question.

Long-term trends are coming to an important climax now. This dramatic period is highlighted by the added amount of information being thrown your way. Try to make small adjustments to your direction that incorporate this new information. Be aware of the prevailing winds and your relationships will be much better off.

Take a break from what you’re doing. Look at what people are doing around you. Check your plans in relation to those of others and see if there’s a way you can combine forces and kill more birds with fewer stones. Cooperation instead of competition is the lesson that needs to be emphasized today. The better you learn this today, the better off you’ll be tomorrow.Get involved with the energy of today so you don’t get left out of the loop. Your contribution to the group is important. You should foster positive relationships among all parties. Think big. You can do no wrong by expanding your mind out into the minds of others. Make a commitment to quench your thirst for knowledge and freedom through information.

You might be in a whirlwind today, and there will be information buzzing around asking you to do this and go there. You’re the one most perfectly suited to deal with the tone of the day. Stay lively and upbeat. Don’t get stuck on any one thing. Keep the energy moving. The answer will be right there waiting for you.

You can add more tools to your toolbox today. Express your concerns and you’ll find helpful remedies present themselves. Keep the lines of communication open and let the information flow. There’s a great expansiveness that comes when you think for yourself - and think big. Don’t get bogged down with the emotional side of things. Concern yourself with the facts.

Bonn

2017 is on track to be the hottest year on record

except for two warmed by El Nino phenomena, the UN’s World Meteorological Organization said yesterday.

Even if the cyclical weather events -- which bump up global temperatures every three to seven years -- are included, this year will still be one of the three warmest ever, the WMO said as it issued its annual State of the Global Climate report at talks in Bonn.

Average temperatures from 2013 through 2017 are also likely to be the highest since accurate measuring

began more than a century ago, constituting strong evidence of a long-term trend.

Some 30 per cent of the world’s population now experience “extreme hot temperatures” for at least several days each year, the UN agency said.

Meanwhile the number of vulnerable people exposed to potentially lethal heatwaves has increased by 125 million just since 2000.

“The past three years have all been in the top three years in terms of temperature records,” said WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas. (AFP)

The man who killed at least 26 people in a Baptist

church in a rural Texas town on Sunday died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Wilson County Sheriff Joe Tackitt told CBS News in an interview yesterday morning.

Tackitt said gunfire was exchanged between the gunman and two armed citizens during a vehicle chase after the shootings.

“There was some gunfire exchanged, I believe, on the

roadway also, and then (the shooter’s vehicle) wrecked out,” said Tackitt. “At this time we believe that he had a self-inflicted gunshot wound, after he wrecked out.”

The man officials have identified to The Associated Press as the gunman in a mass shooting at a Texas church was discharged from the Air Force for allegedly assaulting his spouse and child, according to an Air Force spokeswoman. (Independent)

Tokyo

US President Donald Trump has said Japan

could shoot North Korean missiles “out of the sky” with military equipment bought from the US.

Japan’s PM Shinzo Abe followed up by saying his country could intercept missiles “if necessary”, and added that he was looking into the deal.

The two leaders were speaking to reporters at the close of Trump’s first state visit to Japan.

North Korea has fired missiles over Japan twice in recent months.

Yesterday, while answering questions at a press conference, Trump said Abe was “going to purchase massive amounts of military equipment” from the US.

Referencing North Korea’s missiles, he said Abe could

“shoot them out of the sky” when he completed the purchase, which Trump said would provide jobs to Americans as well as “safety for Japan”.

Abe said he was considering such a deal, adding that Japan had to “qualitatively and quantitatively” enhance its defence capability, given the “very tough” North Korea situation.

He stressed that missile defence was based on “legal co-operation” between Japan and the US, and as for shooting down missiles, “if necessary of course we can do that”.

It is not clear whether a military deal has been signed during Trump’s trip, but the two countries are close military allies with the US maintaining several military bases in Japan.

In September Trump had

tweeted that he would allow the sale of high-end military equipment to Japan and South Korea.

Japan does not have a standing army, but instead maintains what it calls self-defence forces, under its post-war pacifist constitution which the hawkish Abe has been seeking to revise.

The two leaders also reaffirmed their ties and pledged to “stand against the North Korean menace”, said Trump. Abe said Japan was imposing sanctions on several North Korean entities and individuals.

Earlier yesterday, North Korean state media accused Trump of driving tensions “to the extremes” and said that “no-one can predict when the lunatic old man of the White House, lost to senses, will start a nuclear war” against North Korea. (BBC)

The “Fat Leonard” corruption investigation

has expanded to include more than 60 admirals and hundreds of other US navy officers under scrutiny for their contacts with a defence contractor in Asia who systematically bribed sailors with sex, alcohol and other temptations, according to the navy.

Most of the admirals are suspected of attending extravagant feasts at Asia’s

best restaurants paid for by Leonard Glenn Francis, a Singapore-based maritime tycoon who made an illicit fortune supplying navy vessels in ports from Vladivostok, Russia, to Brisbane, Australia. Francis also was renowned for hosting boozy after-dinner parties, which often featured imported prostitutes and sometimes lasted for days, according to federal court records. (The Washington Post)

Baghdad

Islamic State chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has reportedly

fled from Iraq to Syria in a yellow taxi to avoid drawing suspicion.

An intelligence source claimed the IS chief was hiding in Rawa, northwestern Iraq, when troops entered Qaim some 50 miles away near the Syrian border, the Daily Mail

reported.Al-Baghdadi felt his

presence in Rawa “threatened his life”, so he scampered over the border to Deir ez-Zor in a vehicle synonymous with the western world of New York.

The source was quoted by the Iraqi News as saying: “After Iraqi troops invaded Qaim, Baghdadi was aware that his presence in Rawa threatens his

life. In a yellow taxi, Baghdadi fled Iraq and headed to Syria. He is believed to have settled in Deir ez-Zor.”

“The IS leader insisted on taking a yellow cab in order not to be a source for doubts. He urged the remaining IS fighters in Qaim to carry on fighting the Iraqi troops, but the source said they ‘let him down and escaped in their personal cars

to Syria.”The IS released a new

audio recording in September purporting to be of Al-Baghdadi. The 46-minute audio recording was published by the Al-Furqan news organisation, which is affiliated with the IS, and came after Russia claimed to have killed Baghdadi in an airstrike on Raqqa in June.

The previous time Baghdadi was heard on tape was back in November 2016 as the battle for Mosul was starting, in which he urged followers to fight the “unbelievers” and “make their blood flow as rivers”.

US-backed forces subsequently drove the IS out of Mosul, it’s last stronghold in Iraq and the city from which Baghdadi declared his

Caliphate in 2014.Allied forces have since

surrounded Raqqa, in Syria, which acted as the IS’s de-facto capital and was another possible hiding spot for Baghdadi.

Officials then believed he was likely hiding somewhere in the sparsely populated desert between these two cities, predicting it could take years to locate him. (IANS)

Aden

Yemeni forces ended a hostage crisis yesterday

with 29 police and six civilians dead, a day after the attack claimed by the Islamic State group began with suicide bombings, official sources said.

Assailants on Sunday stormed the criminal investigations unit in Aden, the Yemeni government’s de facto capital, setting it alight and taking hostages after killing two policewomen execution-style.

The attack began on Sunday, when two suicide bombers blew themselves up at the entrances to the criminal investigations unit and the city’s security headquarters.

Overnight, the security forces tried three times to seize back the unit, but each time a suicide bomber blew himself up, stopping them from entering, a security official said.

A fourth suicide bombing occurred on Monday morning, before the security forces finally brought an end to the standoff in the southern port city.

A total of 29 members of the security forces were killed during the attack and hostage crisis, the official said.

Among them were six

police officers whose bodies were found buried under the rubble of the building along with six civilians, including two children.

“The security forces have managed to enter the building and clear it of the elements of evil and terrorism,” said the interior ministry of President

Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi’s internationally recognised government.

The bullet-riddled bodies of three assailants were also found in the rubble, the security official said.

The attack was claimed by IS in a statement released online on Sunday. (AFP)

I am inspiredby Federer and Nadal : HamiltonLondon

Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton has revealed he draws inspiration from tennis greats R o g e r

Federer and Rafael Nadal.Hamilton sealed his fourth

world championship last week with a ninth-place finish at the Mexican Grand Prix.

It capped a dominant year for the British driver after the disappointment of losing the 2016 title to Nico Rosberg.

In an i n t e r v i e w w i t h Spanish o u t l e t A S ,

Hamilton opened up on the importance of mental strength and name-checked Federer and Nadal.

“When you look at the great champions of tennis or golf you realise that mental power is everything is the mind that controls what you do, Hamilton said.

“Stars like Nadal or Federer are an example for everyone and I try to inspire myself in what they do.”

The 32-year-old also spoke out about his relationship with Sebastian Vettel, who was his

closest rival in the Ferrari this season. “My relationship with Vettel is correct, we are not twenty

years old, we are adult men,” he said.“If I think of Sebastian, I know what he has done in

recent years, I know how what it is and what its strengths and weaknesses are, and I also know the strengths and weaknesses of your car.”

And Hamilton feels that combating negativity is the key to his success.

“Now I try to eliminate everything harmful, regardless of what they write or say. I have

managed to make myself a barrier to combat negativity because I am

c o n v i n c e d that love and positivity can with everything and everyone,” he added.

London

Felipe Massa says he is “ready to follow a different path”

after announcing he will retire from Formula 1 at the end of the 2017 season. Massa originally quit F1 at the end of 2016, but was enticed back by Williams to replace Valtteri Bottas, who left for Mercedes ahead of the current campaign following Nico Rosberg’s surprise retirement.

Massa admits he was keen to stay on in F1 for a 16th season, as he feels competitive enough to compete, but has “no regrets”.

“Part of me wanted to carry on because I think I’m still competitive enough to race a top-line Formula 1 car, and also because I feel very

good at Williams,” he said in his column for Autosport’s sister title Motorsport.com.

“But every story has to come to an end at some point, and on my part I have no regrets.

“Exactly a year ago I lived the same situation, and then suddenly the team asked me to come back.

“For me, it was a real privilege to do so and something I appreciated a lot, and a year later I am ready to follow a different path - happy with what I have done and what we have achieved this season.”

Massa plans to continue racing, with Formula E on the agenda in the future, but has yet to decide what his programme will be next year. (autosport)

Norris lands McLaren reserve roleLondon

Lando Norris has been confirmed as McLaren’s official test and

reserve driver for 2018. The Briton, who turns 18 next Monday, replaces 2009 world champion Jenson Button in the role and will be McLaren’s first option to deputise for race drivers Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne next season.

Norris won the European Formula 3 championship last month, emulating four-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.

“I’m so excited to be joining McLaren as test and reserve driver for 2018. The last 12 months have been an incredible journey for me - I’ve enjoyed every single minute - and this is just an amazing way to bring the year to an end,” Norris said.

“I’m really looking forward to helping the team, starting next week with the tyre test at Interlagos, and I will work harder than ever to learn and develop across the next year.

“I have two excellent teachers in Fernando and Stoffel, and I will

do my best to help with the team’s efforts to get back to the front.

“I’m still working hard to finalise my own racing programme for 2018 - we’re close on a number of different fronts, but not quite there yet. I hope to be able to announce

something shortly.”Norris joined McLaren’s Young

Driver Programme in February and his impressive rise through the lower formulae has seen him tipped as a grand prix star of the future. (skysports)

Ferrari quit threat isn’t idle talk: EcclestoneLondon

Liberty Media shouldn’t take Ferrari’s latest threat to quit Formula 1 as

nothing more than bluster, says former F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone.

Last week, F1’s new owners announced several changes to the engine regulations aimed at reducing costs, levelling the playing field and increasing the noise of the power units.

Those changes did not go down well with Ferrari.

“If we change the sandbox to the point where it becomes an unrecognisable sandbox, I don’t want to play anymore,” warned the Italian marque’s president Sergio Marchionne.

And Ecclestone says it is not an idle threat.

“If they can’t win, they will put forward new regulations,” he told the

Independent newspaper.“If the regulations come out where

Ferrari think it is going to be a struggle and they can’t support the money, then they will leave.”

The former F1 supremo also expects the Scuderia to balk at the proposed budget cap that Liberty Media could unveil as early as this week.

“They don’t want budget caps and all that,” he said. (foxsportsasia)

The second round of National Race Day at

Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) produced plenty of thrills in the three local championships in action over the weekend in Sakhir.

Ahmed Al Muyni stole the show after clinching a rare “double-double”, winning all four races from two different motorbike categories, namely the Bahrain Superbike Championship (BSBK) and the Bahrain Motorcycle Racing (BMR) 600.

Meanwhile, Raed Himmo, a former champion and perennial contender in the BIC 2,000cc Challenge, emerged victorious in the meeting’s first race.

All the action took place along the 2.55-kilometre Inner Track of BIC, beginning in the day time and then ending under floodlights at night.

Al Muyni was in a class of his own with a clean sweep of

both races in the BSBK and BMR 600.

In the BSBK, after topping the timesheets in qualifying to earn pole position for race one, Al Muyni won the 11-lap opening sprint in a total time of 12 minutes 54.977 seconds – 6.924 seconds ahead of runner-up Wesley Pearce. Salman Khalaf came third 14.638s back.

Race two featured the same podium, with Al Muyni taking the chequered flag 3.307s ahead of Pearce and Khalaf finishing 13.456s behind.

In the BMR 600, Al Muyni topped the field in qualifying and once again secured the leading position at the start grid. He made no mistake in defending his place despite plenty of pressure from his

closest rival Mohammad Al Zaidan.

Only 0.327s split the pair at the end of race one, who were well ahead of the rest of the riders. Nasser Al Khadra came third a massive 32.976s back. They made up the top three in the race’s Super Stock category.

In the Hornet class, Mohammed Al Ateeqi was

victorious. He was followed by Pawel Rosciszewski and Ahmad Abdulsalam.

In race two, the same trio finished in the same order as the first race, although Al Muyni enjoyed a more comfortable victory having a 14.585s gap in front of Al Zaidan by the finish. Al Khadra was classified third 33.309s behind.

The Hornet class also had the same podium-placers, with Al Ateeqi, Rosciszewski and Abdulsalam taking the top three.

Finally, Himmo was engaged in a tough battle for the number one spot and eventually claimed a win in race one of the BIC 2,000cc Challenge.

Himmo, driving a Honda Civic, took control after former champion and pole-sitter Shaikh Salman bin Isa bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, also in a Civic, retired from the race in the seventh lap.

Himmo charged to the lead and completed the 12-lap sprint in 16:03.641, just 5.407s ahead of Ahmed Bin Khanen in a Honda Civic EG4. Defending champion Tim Birkin in a Honda Integra came third 9.307s behind.

Following all the racing, the day’s winners were honoured in a podium ceremony attended by officials from BIC, the Bahrain Motor Federation and Circuit Racing Club.

Al Muyni sizzles with impressive ‘double-double’P23

Madrid

Marco Asensio struck an instant classic as Real Madrid returned to winning ways

with a 3-0 victory over Las Palmas. After back-to-back defeats at the hands

of Girona and Tottenham, a much-needed success for Zinedine Zidane’s side was topped and tailed by efforts from Casemiro and Isco.

Asensio’s will linger longest in the memory, an inconceivably sweet half-volley which mixed rare precision with maximum power.

Three points still leaves Real eight points

adrift of rivals and LaLiga leaders Barcelona but the mini-slump has at least been emphatically arrested.

Real came looking for an early goal and almost had one in the bank in the fourth minute. Ronaldo’s quick feet played Karim Benzema through on goal but he failed to get the ball fully out of his feet and his scuffed finish was safely smothered by Raul.
