Exhibit Judges

Patricia Tector – Head Judge

Patricia Tector has received Judges’ Certification from the American

Needlepoint Guild (ANG) and Master Level Judges’ Certification from

the National Academy of Needlearts (NAN). She has judged national and

regional exhibits, served several years as Administrator of NAN’s The

Exemplary and has served as Director of Judges’ Certification for NAN.

Patricia received a B.S. in Biology from the University of Detroit and

became a registered Medical Technologist. She says that she has

exchanged one form of a needle for another!

Over the years, Patricia has taken many workshops from noted teachers

in an extensive variety of techniques. She had the exciting opportunity

to be part of a group in Pennsylvania that studied and practiced a wide

range of stitching that was a catalyst for her love of needlework. In turn,

Patricia welcomes any opportunity to be a catalyst for others in the

needlework world whether judging, teaching or simply encouraging.

Mary Kay Campbell

Mary K. Campbell earned the Senior Master Judge Certification through

the National Academy of Needlearts (NAN). In addition, she has

completed her Judging Certification and six renewals through the

American Needlepoint Guild and is pursuing a judging certification with

the Knitting Guild of America. Mary K. is the author of the book, Judging

Bobbin Lace. She holds the Senior Master Teacher Certification in ANG

and has taught at many ANG Seminars, at local ANG chapters,

Embroiderers’ Guild of America (EGA) regional and local meetings and in

an Omaha shop.

A talented needle artist, she earned a Judge’s Choice Ribbon in ANG’s

Seminar Exhibit in 1988, a Best in Show at Nebraska State Fair in 1986,

The Best Original Needle point at the Nebraska State Fair in 1996, and

the Artist of the Year Ribbon from the Omaha Needle Artists in 1991

and 1993.She has judged at the County and State levels in Nebraska,

served five times as a judge at the ANG seminar and twice at the NAN

assembly. A former hospital chaplain, schoolteacher, ANG VP of

Education, and Past President of ANG, Mary K. continues committee

work for ANG while being active in EGA, NAN, and the National

Embroidery Teachers’ Association (NETA).

Houston, Texas ANG Seminar 2019 6

Jennifer Riefenberg

Jennifer is an accomplished needleartist, meshing her love of the arts

into new and varied mediums. She loves teaching, both skills and the

pure love and joys of art and creativity. Jennifer holds certifications

through National Academy of Needlearts(NAN) as a Teacher/Designer

and Judge. Jennifer serves on the board of NAN as the Director of

Judging. She teaches at national, regional, and local seminars. Jennifer

has won numerous awards for her needleart and other artwork. She

has a piece accessioned into the permanent collection at the Gregg

School of Art &Design at North Carolina State University. Jennifer is also

the photographer for NAN and EGA Seminars. The visual journey

continues as Jennifer is also a winner of national and regional awards

with her paintings. Jennifer paints in various mediums – but is most at

home, outside with nature and oil paint.

She is a fourth-generation Colorado native and has degrees in

engineering and mathematics. Jennifer is a board member of Plein Air

Artists of Colorado (PAAC) and member of the American Impressionist

Society, Women Artists of the West, and Oil Painters of America. She

has won numerous awards in local and national exhibitions. She

teaches classes in oil painting, engaging her students to find their own

voice as they master the techniques of painting. She is currently

exhibiting her work at the Framed Image in Denver and Mary Williams

Fine Arts in Boulder. “I prefer painting from life - en plein air. Painting is

exploring and discovering, healing and learning, admiring and

preserving. As a painting takes on its own voice, it becomes a living

experience with each brushstroke a breath toward its creation. I love to

paint, and I hope that my artwork communicates the experiences that I

have and captures the very essence of the beautiful world through my

eyes and interpretation.”

Factors Considered in Judging the Seminar Exhibit

Design: The arrangement of details; (i.e., basic elements - line, shape, size,

direction, text, value, color) and principles of design (unity, contrast, dominance,

harmony, balance, repetition, alternation, and gradation), which produce a

complete artistic presentation.

Color: The manner in which color and its four attributes (hue, temperature,

value, and intensity) are used serves to bring a composition to life for a pleasing

total effect and design balance.

Workmanship/Technique: This reflects the stitcher’s skill level when

handling various threads, stitches, and techniques. All the elements of color,

design, texture, and workmanship are considered.

Enhancement of Commercial Design: The creativity with stitches and

threads to make an enriched piece of needlework.

Suitability: The threads, stitches, and ground fabric are appropriate to each

other, to the design, and to the use of the article, and all contribute positively to

the whole.

Finishing/Presentation: The final presentation should enhance and

complement the stitchery, not overwhelm it, and is neat, fresh, and clean. It

need not be professionally done, but it should reflect professionalism.

Special Awards

The PRINCESS GRACE AWARD may be given to any entry, in any judged

category, that is worked entirely in the tent stitch, without embellishments, such

as beads or other attachments, in order to maintain the purity of the stitching

technique. The tent stitch is defined as going over one intersection from lower

left to upper right with no backstitches, seed stitches or outline stitches. The

winner of this award also receives a Boehm rose.

The SAMPLER AWARD may be given to an entry that is a collection of

patterns, stitches, and techniques put together in a convenient reference form.

This includes historical reproductions and class projects that meet the stated

criteria. This award is given in memory of Amyee Johnson.

The CREATIVE INSPIRATION AWARD may be given to any entry in the

Original or Adaptation category that the judges decide is best in creative design

and its elements, which includes the use of color. An Artist’s statement must

accompany the entry.

The WEARABLE ART AWARD may be given to any entry in a judged category

that demonstrates the most creative wearable needlepoint, excluding nametags.

The SMALL MASTERPIECE AWARD may be given to any entry (piece or set)

in any judged category, with the length plus width of the stitched area of a two-

dimensional piece being less than or equal to 10 inches, or the length plus width

plus depth of the stitched area of a three-dimensional piece being less than or

equal to 15 inches. If an entry consists of multiple pieces, they shall be judged

for this award if each piece in the set fits the criteria of a Small Masterpiece.

The SILK AND METAL AWARD may be given to any entry in a judged

category that is worked entirely in silk, metallic, and/or metal threads, which the

judges decide is the best use of those threads.

The FOUNDERS AWARD may be given to any entry in the Class Project

category that demonstrates the student’s development of the project, including

presenting the finished stitched piece in a different format or doing multiples of

the same project. The winner of this award also receives a Revere bowl.

PRESIDENT'S CHOICE AWARD may be given to any entry that represents

“Deep in the Heart of Stitchin’.” When you think of Houston, is it beaches and

Houston, Texas ANG Seminar 2019 9

sand? Maybe it’s NASA with astronaut training and flight control complex. Let’s

not forget about Beyonce and Clint Black. Perhaps they have always wanted to

sing about the prairie sky, sage in bloom, or coyotes walking along the trail.

Or, if you really wanted to think of Houston as something different, don’t forget

that Howard Huges is a native of Houston. So, with Houston’s vast identity in so

many areas, you could say that the sky’s the limit when it comes to designing this

piece. Expand your mind, grab a needle and thread, and go for it.

The FIRST-TIME EXHIBITOR AWARD may be given to an entry in any

judged category that is stitched by a first-time exhibitor. A first-time exhibitor is

defined as a person entering the Exhibit for the very first time. Anyone who has

entered anything in Categories 1 through 7 in a past Exhibit is excluded.

The NINA M. GOERRES CHRISTMAS THEME AWARD may be given to

an entry in any judged category that the judges decide expresses Christmas as a

theme. The special ribbon center for this award is stitched by the award donors.

The winner of this award receives a $250 scholarship toward Seminar or any

distance learning project.

The HILTON STITCH AWARD may be given for any piece that demonstrates

the most effective use of Hilton-type stitches. An entry in any category may

qualify for this ribbon. The winner of this award receives a leaded crystal bowl.

The STATE AWARD may be given to an entry in any judged category of the

Exhibit that is entered by a person from Texas, this year’s Seminar locale.

Traditionally, this award is chosen by a representative of the state or in which

Seminar is being held.

The BETH ROBERTSON CANVAS EMBELLISHMENT AWARD may be

given to the entry in the Painted Design Without Stitch Guide category that the

judges decide exemplifies the best use of stitches, threads, and colors to

enhance a painted or stamped canvas.

The SHIRLEY FETTEROLF HALLOWEEN AWARD may be given to an entry

in any judged category that the judges decide best expresses Halloween as a

theme.

The JUDGE’S CHOICE AWARDS are selected by the judges individually. Each

Judge will award one ribbon. All judged entries are eligible.

Houston, Texas ANG Seminar 2019 10

The DELEGATES CHOICE AWARD is selected by majority vote of the

registered participants at the Seminar. All judged entries are eligible.

The PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD is selected by majority vote of the visiting

public from all judged entries.

Quest XXVI - 2019 A Musical Inspiration

QUEST XXVI is sponsored by the

ANG Judging Certification Program

The Quest Challenge celebrates its 26th year by offering an opportunity for all

needle artists to create and exhibit an original or adapted piece of needlepoint

at the ANG Seminar Exhibit 2019 in Houston, TX. All members of ANG are

encouraged to accept the challenge and participate in Quest XXVI by

demonstrating their creative abilities based on the theme: Texture.

The theme, Texture, offers many possibilities for individual interpretation and

design choices. Consider all meanings – whether inspired by a thread, stitch,

mixed media, value changes, just to name a few ideas – as the source of your

artistic inspiration for your stitched entry. Creative interpretation is the key to

success in Quest challenges. As you let your creativity soar, the primary

concern should be excellence in design and interpretation of the theme.

Stitched pieces may be entered in the Original and Adaptation judged

categories or in the non-judged category of the Exhibit, and they must be

designated as Quest entries. While technical ability is always a factor, it is not a

primary consideration in the Quest challenge. An Artist's Statement explaining

the design and the interpretation, as relevant to the theme, is required and

must accompany each Quest entry in order to be eligible. The Artist’s

Statement will become part of the Quest Program archives. The judges will

review the Artist's Statement, evaluate the relativity of the written material to

the design and stitched needlepoint, and write a brief evaluation. Qualifying

entries receive the judge’s brief evaluation and a special Quest Certificate of

Participation.

Houston, Texas ANG Seminar 2019 12

Definitions

The American Needlepoint Guild Inc. (ANG) defines needlepoint as any counted

or free stitchery worked by hand with a threaded needle on a readily countable

ground.

ANG defines a Non-Professional as anyone who, at the time of entry

submission and previously, engages in needlework as a pastime and for pleasure

rather than for financial gain. Teaching or presenting programs/lectures for

guilds without compensation, or community service will not change the status of

a non-professional.

A Professional is anyone who, at the time of entry submission and previously,

engages in needlework as a teacher, judge, artist/designer, lecturer, author, or

stitches for commissioned work and who receives earned remuneration.

The Non-Professional entries within each category are numbered in the

hundreds (101, 102, etc.) followed by the letters NP. The Professional entries are

numbered in the thousands (1001, 1002, etc.) followed by the letter P. Each of

the categories begin with the number of that category, such as Category 1 uses

the 100s and 1000s, Category 2 uses the 200s and 2000s, etc.

A class with “Encore” at the end of the title means that the class was taught

previously.

The following symbol is used throughout the categories for consideration of the

special award:

* First-Time Exhibitor

Master Teacher Program (MTP)

The goal of the Master Teacher Program is to help current teachers become

more skilled in the instruction of needlepoint. Candidates develop their design

and color skills while becoming more comfortable in sharing their knowledge and

love of needlework with students in a classroom situation. As the candidate

progresses through all three levels of the program, she or he has the guidance of

a proctor who has completed the program and is a Master Teacher. The three

program levels are Journeyman, Fellow, and Master Teacher. Original designs

Houston, Texas ANG Seminar 2019 27

are a requirement of the program and allow the participant to create new classes. For questions or information, please contact [email protected].

No exhibits in 2019

Master Needle Artist Program (MNAP)

Do you have a favorite artist, artistic style or period? Consider the Master Needle Artist (MNA) Program to perfect your artistic skills as an advanced intermediate needlepointer.

The MNA Program is designed to advance the artistic skills within the Candidate

and to develop that ART into an original needlepoint design. For more

information, please email the Chair at [email protected].

No exhibits in 2019

NeedleArts Appraisal Program (NAP)

The purpose of the NeedleArts Appraisal Program (NAP) is to train

knowledgeable and professional appraisers of needlework. A professional

appraiser establishes the purpose of the appraisal and determines the value of

the property for which the appraisal is requested. All ANG members interested

in attaining this expertise are eligible to participate in the NAP. For more

information about the NAP , or to contact any of our appraisers, contact the

Chairman of the Program at [email protected].

No exhibits in 2019

Judging Certification Program (JCP)

The Judging Certification Program (JCP) was established to assist ANG members

Master Needlepointer Program (MNP)

The Master Needlepointer Program is a qualification process for needleworkers wishing to demonstrate their technical excellence using needle and thread. Two levels of recognition can be achieved. The Master Needlepointer level will be awarded after satisfactory evaluation of the first four stages. The stages begin with basic techniques and progress to intermediate and advanced stitches, both needlepoint and counted thread, and the use of textural stitches and color to produce depth. You may use supplied designs, commercial designs, or create your own for any stage in the Master Needlepointer level. The Master Needlepointer level can be accomplished in a little as two years, but you can proceed at your own pace, completing the first four stages within five years. Senior Master Needlepointer will be awarded with the completion of two additional stages that require the creation of original designs, application of color theory, and advanced stitching techniques. Contact us at [email protected].
