What Kind of Floor Do Houstons Flooring Experts Choose for Their Own Home?

The Memorial-area home of Sam and ValerieRoberts, owners of Roberts Carpet & FineFloors, served them well for 15 years whilethey were raising their three children there. When the kids grew up and moved to Austin,Sam and Valerie decided to remodel theirhouse to make it more functional for the waythey live today. Their nest is far fromemptytheyre entertaining more than everthese days, and the kids are often home fromAustin with friends in tow. Sam and Valerieactually needed to add onto the house to cre-ate more room and make it more hospitablefor guests. And, of course, they had to addnew flooring. Their company is Houstonsleading carpet and flooring specialty retailbusiness. So, what did the flooring expertschoose for their own home? Please seePage 14. Photography by Miro Dvorscak.

Its that season when we lis-ten more closely to weatherreports, and our ears perk up whenwe hear, storm in the Atlantic ortropical disturbance in the Lesser Antilles.

Were not going to have a hurricane in Houston/Galvestonthis year, no way, I tell myself.Still, as Sept. 13 approaches, I feelshpilkes nervous flutters. Whathappened a year ago when Hurri-cane Ike blew across our GulfCoast was something fierce.

Everyone has an Ike story. Our cover feature this month isPam Houstons Ike story fromGalveston. A year and a half agowhen I visited her lovely home inthe historic district there, I, ofcourse, had no inkling what was tounfold. Wed planned to do thestory last fall. Well, Ike certainlyput the kibosh on that, but here itis at last. Pams house, so lovinglyrestored post-Ike, makes me feelgood about Galveston. That city is great fun, ready for visitors andneeds our business. Go, and dontmiss that Artist Studio Tour onSept. 12 (see Around Town).

Keep your eyes out this monthfor a new book called HIWI: Ikeby David Thompson and RandyTwaddle, the same guys who didthe book Houston. Its Worth It.They have a knack for compilingother peoples words and photosand hitting a nerve somewhere

    between hilarious and poignantand scary.

Dave Thompson is one of theHoustonians journalist GabrielleCosgriff interviewed for her storyon Houstons quintessential resi-dential style. You know how youdrive by a house or walk into aroom here and think, Thatssoooo Houston? Well, what is itthat makes a home look and feellike Houston?

Our citys so young and suchan amalgam of cultures, Houstonsdistinct residential style is not easyto define. But Gabrielle has nailedit with the help of some very keen, observant locals. Ive been a fan ofGabrielles work for two decades, and when she agreed to do thisstory, my heart sang. When I readthe story, double ditto.

One thing unfortunately socharacteristic of Houston is howunwalkable our city is. The car isking here, but it wasnt always so.Streetcar lines in the early 20thcentury made Houston eminentlywalkable. David Crossleys story,Houston 3.0: Walkable UrbanismIs on the Way, shows how ournew light rail lines echo the oldstreetcar lines and promise to makeHouston one of the most walkablecities in the U.S. within four years.I find Davids ideas fascinating. And soooo Houston.

in the spotlight The Roberts Remodel

Fifteen years ago Sam and Valerie Roberts and theirthree young children moved into a gracious two-storyhome set amid the towering pines of HoustonsMemorial area.

It suited the busy familys needs perfectly, but now all three childrenare grown and living in Austin, and Sam and Valerie are empty nesters.

This was the time in our lives when the kids are gone to make thehouse fit the next phase in our lives, explains Valerie.

Their nest isnt really empty at all. The kids return home fromAustin frequently, Valeries two sisters from out of state love to visit, andthe Roberts are always entertaining guests.

Yet the house wasnt functioning as well as Valerie wanted. Wewanted more closet space, she says. You know how remodels startthey just grow. One thing leads to another.

Valerie wanted to build a house, says Sam. He didnt. Both ofthem really like the neighborhood. And so, more than a year ago, theydecided to undertake a major remodel of the house.

We identified the things the house didnt have that we wanted andadded them, Sam says.

WHAT THEY DID To achieve more closet space, theroom that was Sams study at the frontentry of the house was divided into two spacesa small library off theentry and a large closet now entered from the master bedroom. Thatsolved the closet dilemma so Sam and Valerie could each have theirown closet.

Sam needed a study, so a new one was added onto the back of thehouse. Its a soaring space with vaulted ceiling, chandelier, and plentyof paned French windows and doors with a fabulous view of the pooland flower garden.

The sunroom/exercise room off the downstairs den was once anoutside patio, and its floor was recessed. To join it visually to the den,the sunrooms floor was raised by covering it with 3/4-inch thick engi-neered Santos Mahogany. The top wear layer is nearly 1/4-inch thickand then mounted to a plywood core. This floor is more indentationresistant, more dimensionally stable and scratch resistant than a solid,sand-and-finish floor, says Sam. It really is superior to a solid floorin virtually every way.

By LINDA BARTH Photography by MIRO DVORSCAK

She wanted to build new. He wanted to stay put. The solution? Sam and Valerie Roberts ofRoberts Carpet & Fine Floors enlarged and remodeled their house to get the home both reallywanted. And what did Houstons flooring experts choose for their own home?

The newly redone game room with media area is furnished in sunny colors, including a sorbet-yellow leather sofa from RobertsCarpets Rug Gallery. I wanted yellow in the room to give it a feeling of joy and sunshine, Valerie says. The floor is engineeredSantos Mahogany in a 3/4-inch thickness to raise the floor in the room to the same level as the den. Planks at the edge of thefloor are laid in soldier rows for visual interest. The colorful Peshawar rug radiates soft, warm red and gold tones which enhancethe wood floor. Also called Chobi, these rugs designs are inspired by nature, helping to bring the feeling of the outside indoors.

Now the space is a game room with pool table, a wet bar on one end and acozy media area/home theater at the other end. The media area countertopsand the wet bar are covered in Imperial Gold granite, installed by RobertsCarpets in-house granite fabricators. With its 73-inch TV and surround-sound,the area has become a favorite of Sams, as well as for entertaining guests.

The kitchen remained intact but was given a new floor to freshen itslook. Sam and Valerie chose Mohawk porcelain tile installed in a custommodular design with four sizes of tile and decorative tile and glass linersspaced every 30 inches.

UPSTAIRS DETAILSThe Roberts wanted separate baths for each of the four bedrooms upstairs.Previously, the two bedrooms on each side of the house shared Hollywood-style baths. This configuration worked fine when the children were sharingbathrooms, but with adult visitors, separate baths would offer more privacy.Where to find the space?

A large, open-air veranda that spanned the back of the house upstairs was

enclosed. Each end of the veranda yielded enough space for the added bathsthat could be accessed through the bedrooms. The central area of theenclosed veranda is now an exercise room and adjacent to it is a freshly decorated TV room.

Flooring in one of the newly redone bedrooms is notable for its color andpattern. The carpet is a rich teal Stainmaster by Karastan with a cut and loopweave in a charming ribbon pattern. The carpet has a Stainmaster Ultralifewarranty, featuring a 15-year no-questions-asked stain and soil warranty plus a 15-year performance warranty only available at Roberts Carpet & Fine Floors.

REMODEL INSPIRES NEW FURNITURE LINEDuring the renovation process, Valerie visited the High Point Market inNorth Carolina. She selects and buys all the area rugs for Roberts Carpet andoften advises customers on which rugs complement their furniture. While inHigh Point, Valerie decided to add a small line of furniture and accessories toRoberts Carpets Rug Gallery locations in Clear Lake and The Woodlands.

The whole idea is to show a vignette where you pull the colors together, she says. We are not a design company or studio, says Valerie. But I decid-

The kitchens new floor is Mohawk porcelain tile installed in a custom modulardesign with four sizes of tile set in a stain-free, maintenance-free grout that resistsmold and mildew. The porcelain tile was chosen for its durability; the glass accenttiles bring jewel-like sparkle to the floor. The classic, earthy tones in the breakfastroom rug complement the light maple cabinets.

In the new bathroom adjacent to the teal-carpeted bedroom, the shower walls areCosta Esmeralda granite slabs installed by Roberts Carpets in-house fabricators. The shower floor is covered in Jurassic green stone tiles custom cut into 3-inchsquares. The floral rug and painted console are from Roberts Carpet Rug Gallery.

For his sunny new study added onto the house, Sam chose a floor of Imperial Goldgranite and Santos Mahogany. I like wood and stone together, he says. I likegranite because its so durable. The desk is from a new line of furniture availablethrough Roberts Carpet Rug Galleries. The guitars are Sams; he plays them daily.

Upstairs, what was once a sitting room is now a TV room with easy access to the exercise room. When youre sittingaround watching TV for awhile, what should you do? Get up and exercise, says Valerie. The seafoam green colors in thePeshawar rug are a perfect transition to the woven wool carpet in the exercise room. I love the soothing color combinationsas well as the unique textural look in this creative product by Nourison, she says. A bonus is the carpet comes in a 13-foot, 9-inch width allowing installation without seams or waste.

BELOW: A vanity from Roberts CarpetsRug Gallery contains plenty of drawers foraccessories.

Carpet in this newly redone guest room is a Stainmaster by Karastan with a cut and loop weave in a ribbon pattern. Thecarpet has a Stainmaster Ultralife warranty featuring a 15-year no-questions-asked stain and soil warranty, plus a 15-yearperformance warranty available only at Roberts Carpet & Fine Floors. Granite for the fireplace surround was installed byRoberts Carpet fabricators.

ed to add a small line of furniture and acces-sories to create a visual for our customerswhile also providing a source for interestingand unusual items.

THE IKE INTERRUPTION About a month or so into the Roberts homeremodel, Hurricane Ike blew through Houston. The crew remodeling the house boarded it upbefore the storm, so it did not sustain damage, however work screeched to a halt because thehouse was without electricity for almost threeweeks. Adding to the chaos, Ike ripped much ofthe roof off Roberts Carpets Clear Lake build-ing, and they had to divert much of their atten-tion to remodeling their store.

Now, a year later, the Clear Lake store hasbeen renovated, and the Roberts remodel iscomplete. Sam loves his new office with itsgranite and mahogany floor and great views ofthe garden. The media area has proven to be agreat place to entertain friends and family.Valerie finally has the closet space she wantedand bedrooms and bathrooms upstairs to househer many guests graciously. Remodeling causesa little bit of upheaval, she admits, but I thinkits well worth it.

Houston is going through some radical changes right now. By far the

biggest is a focused return to its roots, to an old concept called Walkable Urbanism.

In about four years, were going to have light rail transit service in 65 of our neighbor-

hoods. Nearly 200,000 riders will be moving in and out of those neighborhoods by train

every day. Thats going to be different.

Sixty five is a lot of origins and destinations for a young transit system. Very quickly, the

Houston light rail ridership per day could be as great as any other light rail system in the

US and almost certainly will be number two.1 Essentially, we will have gone from the

bottom to the top in 10 years.

An urban network of dispersed centers of various sizes and cultures will evolve. There

will be constant civic pressure to expand the transit network to other centers, always

going to centers, where the people are. In fact, that pressure is palpable everywhere in

the region today. No other U.S. city is so committed to an urban light rail strategy. And,

perhaps ironically, no other U.S. region is so well constructed for such a strategy.

We may be surprised, as we ride the trains around the city, to find

that we already have some interesting neighborhoods many of us

didnt know about. We will certainly find a burst of hot new restau-

rants; some of them will indeed be new, but many have been there

    all along.

Well see the emergence of places that are both origins and destina-

tions, real neighborhoods of various sizes providing amenities and

services to people who choose to live, work, learn, and play in a

    growing walkable urban network.

    I call this Houston 3.0.

Houston 1.0 and 2.0Weve had two big phases. Houston 1.0 was the growth from the

Allen Brothers vision of a great city that led to efficient walkable

urbanism with transit as the basis for development and regional

    mobility.

For nearly 100 years, Downtown, the Heights, Montrose, Bellaire,

and other areas, grew around Houstons enormous streetcar system.

Houston was transit-oriented and walkable for many decades.

Even today, it retains its original bones, the street grid that one

Boulder planner called the best in North America, after Portland.

The people who live in those neighborhoods today drive significant-

ly less than people who live in other areas of the region, even though

    the transit is long gone.

Thats because the neighborhoods, which emanated out from the

transit stations, were originally designed to be walkable. After all,

everybody back then was a pedestrian, and amenities and services

    had to be close by.

Many of those neighborhoods still have centers, urban places

where people come together, often on foot or bicycle, and then fan

back out to the centers surrounding sub-urban residential areas.

By 1940, all the streetcar lines were gone. Houston 2.0 began in

the post-World War II era of the Interstate Highway System that

created a robust sub-urban economy on a vast geographic scale. That

era was based on driving cars and trucks using the cheap energy we

found and sold to the world.

Sprawl and Suburban are not the sameSprawl is disconnected, single-purpose residential developments that

require inhabitants to drive everywhere for everything. It can happen

anywhere and a lot of it did in the Houston region.

Sub-urban, though, means something different. Montrose, the

Heights, Bellaire, and the others are sub-urbs of the Central Business

District, and each of those neighborhoods has centers that have

    residential sub-urbs.

In The Woodlands there is an urban area and a sub-urban area. First

Colony is becoming a sub-urb of the increasingly urban and walka-

ble City of Sugar Land. Slowly, those places look less like sprawl.

In the nation, the market is rapidly moving away from sprawl,

because it really doesnt fit into the traditional continuum of natural,

rural, sub-urban, and urban forms, especially given all the change

drivers, such as climate change, increasing fuel and transportation

costs, and rapidly changing national demographics.

Everywhere in the country, and here in Houston, the big thing is

Town Centers, Livable Centers. These are examples of Walkable

Urbanism. The City of Waller, with 2,000 people, is designing a

town center at its old town center.

We are on the cusp of Houston 3.0. Really, were already in it.

Main Street The KickoffThe City of Houston began to capitalize on its basic historic urban

structure by putting the tracks for the Main Street light rail line back

in the heart of the region, in the middle of the large urban street grid

and block pattern left over from Houston 1.0. Because the little

7.5-mile rail line connected the largest activity intensity center in the

region -- downtown -- with the closest other large activity center --

the Medical Center -- it reached its 2040 goal of 40,000 boardings

    a day in 2007, 33 years early.

The coming phase of light rail service will reach out through the old

urban streetcar grid and beyond, entering the post-1940s eras first

big Houston edge city, the Uptown/Galleria. Along the way it will

go through Greenway Plaza, thus linking the top four activity cen-

    ters in the region.

When the new service begins, 20 percent of all the jobs in the region

will be in a high-capacity transit network.

There are imaginative discussions and plans for hundreds of miles of

new high-capacity transit. That kind of talk is possible because the

region, during 2.0, threw out a huge network of roads to establish

seven great cities; dozens of smaller, growing cities; nearly

150 towns; at least 70 master-planned communities; and thou-

    sands of neighborhoods.

It may be that the creation of so many high-intensity activity cen-

ters in the Houston region leaves us positioned as perhaps the

most polycentric region in the United States -- at a time when

world planners are focused on this abstract vision as the basis of

    sustainability:

Regions with multiple centers, organized intocollaborative economic clusters that form sus-tainable networks of access, mobility, andgreen infrastructure What opportunities are there, in connecting our centers, to create

a new transit-based urban world within the existing sub-urban

one in a way that provides many more choices and job opportu-

    nities for people?

The size of our regional population means weve reached a point that

all big, growing regions in all the world reach, when the market

moves to more self-sufficient centers of many sizes, and connects

them with high-capacity transit. The second transit era has begun.

That era could be the beginning of a move toward a higher quality

of life, as we unravel some of the bottlenecks, take some stress out of

our networks, recover greenspace, and let the market begin to fill in

some blanks and offer enough of a range of lifestyle choices to lower

the level of frustration that now pervades civic life.

Beyond the Houston region, in the vast Texas Triangle of Houston,

Dallas/Fort Worth, San Antonio, and Austin, we can see the outlines

of a rail web of small centers connected to bigger centers and then

cities connected to other cities by high-speed rail.

Houston 3.0 is on a journey toward sustainable prosperity.

This fall the City of Kemah, Texas, is launching its very first antiques fair.Scheduled for the first weekend of November, Antiques By the Bay will be a fourday event bringing antiques merchants and antiques lovers together in the quaintGalveston Bay village of Kemah.

To help build what the city hopes will become a week long event, Kemah hasenlisted the services of veteran Round Top Show promoter Curtis Ann Davis, president of Arbor Antiques Services. Davis has a 12-acre show in Round Topand brings lots of experience to the helm of this project. Davis says she is excitedabout helping Kemah build its event, and her first order of business is to fill thetents with fabulous antiques and art. Texas is a great place for antiquing, and itis important to have the quality and variety of antiques that both designers andcollectors appreciate and have come to expect. It is my goal to build on thatstandard of excellence at this show. We have already had lots of good responsefrom antique dealers from Texas and surrounding states interested in doing the

show. And many of my Round Top east coast dealers have already committed aswell. However, we want to fill to capacity and need more dealers.

Kemah already has so much to offer, Davis adds. It is home to the thirdlargest recreational fleet in the U.S., it has a Boardwalk and Amusement Areawith regularly scheduled events and music, it has great restaurants and B&Bs;adding this annual antique event will put icing on the cake. Nestled on the baybetween Houston and Galveston, Kemah has all the charm one would hope tofind in a sleepy coastal village with close proximity to a thriving major city and ahistorical coastal island.

    Thats Soooo Houston

By GABRIELLE COSGRIFF ...That quintessential Houston look? What is it?

But how to define it in terms of how we live, what

we cherish about our particular some would say

peculiar residential style is not so easy to pin

down. But hey, this is Houston, so in keeping with

    that can-do, leap-into-the-unknown spirit, we

decided to give it a shot. Freelance journalist

    Gabrielle Cosgriff asked several perceptive,

engaged Houstonians to share their thoughts on

what it is about this urban, homey, car-choked, leafy,

contrary kaleidoscope of a city that makes it home.

We know it when we see it Oh, yes, thats soooo Houston!

Dave Thompson of ttweak, co-author of HIWI (Houston. Its Worth It):Everybody talks about Houstons diversity, its lack of zoning, but I prefer to call it per-missiveness the idea that its okay to dowhat you want regardless of your neighbors.

You dont have that keeping-up-with-the-Joneses so much here. If I want to putpink flamingoes on my lawn or cover myhouse with beer cans thats okay. Myaccountant painted her house bright orangewith a purple trim and that was fine withher homeowners association.

Its the aggregation of these things thatmake it so Houston. Take that stretch ofBuffalo Speedway between Bissonnet andHolcombe: Youve got all kinds of architec-ture there ranch-style houses, cottages,Tudor, faux chateaux, that crazy DarthVader house with the big black triangle. Will I see a Colonial? Yes! A bungalow? Yes!A contemporary? Yes! Its bizarre. I love it.Its just an extraordinary freedom of expression.

Carrie Shoemake, Houston architect:Its hard to talk about Houston architecturally. It wasformed with a wildcatter, I-can-do-this mentality, sotheres a broad mix of vernaculars. The thingsthat move the senses here are the green thatsoothing aspect of shade trees and green huesand how that affects our buildings and thequality of the light and the sky, the fra-grances, the seasonal aspect, like in thespring, the first sight of those beautifultulip magnolia trees. Our humidity alsoaffects the light and the sky, especiallyour sunsets such a theater of colors, light and refraction.

Because were in air-conditioning somuch, we need to be able to access the out-side screened porches and ways to balancethe light. We can have it come into a roomfrom more than one direction to reduce theglare a result of the moisture in our air. We canplace windows so the light moves seasonally aroundthe room. It reminds us that were part of the solar sys-tem, its free and we can all experience it. And in Houston, ithelps make up for our lack of seasons.

  • Rick Lowe, founder ofHoustons Project RowHouses:I just came back from a trip, andwas reminded how great it is toget back to Houston. My ThirdWard neighbors still sit out onthe porch and you get thatfriendly wave and that nod.Houstons a big city but its gifted with these small-towntouches. Conversely, it alwayspuzzles me how we developneighborhoods, nice houses, trees, and then boom! out ofnowhere heres this big, three-story townhouse thats justplugged itself in there. We havethis extreme juxtaposition thatalways makes me cringe.

And theres a great folk artatmosphere here not just pub-licly, but in how people live.People make things all the time.I know a guy who covers tableswith matchsticks. Its just some-thing he does. Another guy hada room full of masks that hewould make for fun and giveaway. Its a renegade, kind ofoutsider, attitude, but its notstrange. In fact in Houston its acompliment.

Elouise (Ouisie) Jones, owner of Ouisies Table:Ive lived in all kinds of houses and loved them allbecause you can express yourself, its a creative out-let. My husband Harry and I chose every plant inour garden I told him we had to call it a gardenbecause wed spent far too much money on it tokeep calling it a yard. We have a plethora of bamboobecause I think its so gorgeous that a grass can growto 65 feet tall. In early summer, the shoots come uplike asparagus.

My grandmother was very conscious of thatcreativity, not anything pretentious, just graceful andlivable. She passed that down to my mother and tous. I still have the big conch shells she used asdoorstops, before air-conditioning, to catch thebreezes. I love them. But I also adore air-condition-ing. Its my favorite invention, and I love ceiling fansin the house, on the porch. I like the activity theycreate.

But air-conditioning has a lot to do with whymany of us live in boxes. You need vistas and viewsto enjoy interiors. I believe in bringing the outsidein people did that naturally before air-condition-ing. Now, we build for air-conditioning first, then itgoes out and we dont know how to act.Project Row Houses

Scott Ballard, Houston residential architect:The best of Houston architecture goes back toJohn Staub, mostly his pre-World War II houses.Drive up and down North and South Boulevards, through River Oaks theyre beautifully com-posed, striking, an East Coast vocabulary but withglorious views of Houstons oaks. Now you see alot of Staub wannabees, big West U and RiverOaks McMansions, lots of pillars. Houstons suchan entrepreneurial place, some people have made alot of money and they try to duplicate that look.

But for people with less money, who want todo something different, their own taste and theirown art can complement anything a designer cando. In Houston, if you have a good idea, peopleare willing to let you do it, to sit back and see whathappens. It has allowed me to do some off-the wallthings, to be an artist as well as an architect.

Thats Soooo HoustonCarlos Jimenez, architect:Houston is either maligned or celebrated for its lack of zoning. This driven city has become a vast yet often wasteful and unmiti-gated field where everything grows or sprouts. The citys elusivecontext and frontier spirit do not automatically mean an indiffer-ence to place. In fact, Houston becomes ever more interestingonce we understand the singularity of its physical determinants its agile infrastructure or abundant treescape.

Thus a marvelous live oak, a particular view, a distinct quality of light, a porous wall, or a shaded garden acquires greatersignificance as it profits the projects life. In this regard a worksuch as Discovery Green, our downtown park, is exemplary in itsmany contributions to the citys betterment. It encapsulates theenlightened merger of business and public space. It is an enter-prise that transcends many times over the myopic rules of profitfor profits sake.

Candice Schiller, design director, Schiller Del GrandeRestaurant Group:The nature of the city sets the tone for its architecture, and thats what weve triedto express in our new place Houstons great fashion and art and design and itsrich, environment. Plus, we are all products of our past, and RDG + Bar Annie isthe evolution of Caf Annie.

We have floral, happy fabrics downstairs, then gold and red, for a rich saloonaspect, in the bar, and the grill room is done in brown leathers and fabrics, all epitomizing different facets of the city. You can see the outside, views of our greatarchitecture, from just about anywhere inside. Theres a welcoming, communalgreen granite table in the bar, and we have a lovely encaustic tile floor with an oldCuban design, a little reference to Houstons past, like youd find in 1920s and 30shouses.

Medically and in business and energy Houston is second to none, but in thatsense of freedom and openness were still like the old west. Chances are alwaysgood that innovation will be well received.

Richard Holley, interior designer:There is a tradition here of individuals and families who havemade it big and give back big. So many of our arts institutionshave been founded by, funded by and supported byHoustonians. Were blessed with people who arent afraid to stepup to the plate, if not with money, then with time and talent. Itsenormously democratic anybody can participate.

This exuberance, this vibrancy, that Houstonians bring tothe arts reflects itself in our homes. Houston used to have a reallyconservative mindset. Georgian furniture was a religion. Thenpeople came along like [designer] Herbert Wells, who was sounafraid of color and mixing things up, and the Menils, whoshowed people there was a different, more relaxed way to live. Now, people are less afraid of contemporary or abstract art, ofphotography as art. Our institutions, large and small, our gal-leries, have opened our eyes. Local talent flourishes.

whats lovable about our city, unlike other cities, where it can

take generations to become estab-lished. Here, you have a good idea, energy,

chutzpah, you can make it. I remember an Eye-Opener tour when I took a bunch

of folks, some from River Oaks, to the Third Ward to see theFlower Mans place. Then Id see these River Oaks gardensbegin to reflect that putting different flowers together, a riotof color.

The downside of a city that constantly reinvents itself isthe loss of so many historical landmarks. But the upside isthat its consistently fresh, always moving forward. Im apreservationist, but Ive come to appreciate that forward-thinking energy, that always looking to tomorrow that makesHouston Houston.

David Stone, longtime Houston interior designer:Houston is so cosmopolitan, with so many different influences. The waypeople live -- you get off an elevator in a condo and all of a sudden youthink youre in Venice or Florence, not vulgar, but with great style. Or youcould just as easily walk into a contemporary home and it has three piecesof furniture.

Its my job to do whats appropriate for Houston: for example, Im notgoing to upholster a lot of furniture in mohair plush. Houstonians tend tobe more eclectic, and to take themselves less seriously. Many of them haveinteresting homes, whereas if they lived in New York or on the West Coastthey might not be so individualistic. Someone with a very formal livingroom might still have a throw tossed casually on a couch. That Houstonair-conditioning can get a bit chilly.

Teresa OConnor, installation artist, ownerHello-Lucky boutique: Houston has many affordableartists spaces and that justbreeds the artistic spirit thatpumps through this city. Werefearless, unapologetic. We mixideas, colors, fabrics and ethnici-ties. This was a table leg, now its a shelf bracket. But were alsonostalgic. Even if we dont knowan objects history we respect thefact that it has a history.

The cultural part of the city isnot obvious like, say, New Elm in Dallas. My friend Dean Haddockdesigned a T-shirt that says Its okay to heart Houston. I like that under-statement. (So do New Yorkers. He moved there and is always being askedwhere he got his shirt.) Its like people who tell me they love seeing that littlepiata place right next to the Glass Wall restaurant. Thats why people fightwhen developers come in and want to homogenize everything.

    Thats Soooo Houston

Suzanne Longley, landscaping business owner, formerHouston Ballet prima ballerina.Houston used to be mostly green, with not much color, but thats changed inthe past 30 years. Our gardens have become a lot more sophisticated. Youdont have so many of those little moustache landscapes those symmetricalplantings on either side of the front door. Were getting into native plants anda wilder landscape, more informal. And of course, our trees we have anamazing variety of colors, shapes and blooms, not just live oaks and pines.

Two things Ive been noticing: Right now, with our water situation, andwith global warming looming, I see a big push to native plants. We need touse these plants. We have all these marvelous colors and shapes to pick from. And Houstonians are embracing water features, which go well in almost anygarden not anything ornate, necessarily, maybe a small urn or tricklingfountain. And one thing we Houstonians do well to remember: its about10 degrees cooler in the shade of a tree.

Lisa Gray, HoustonChronicle columnist:Houston robs you of your long-term memory. What used to bethere? you ask all the time. Whatwas there before that new sky-scraper? Before that block of town-houses? Driving down a street youused to know, you can't find yourold landmarks the fourplex whereyour friend used to live, the bunga-low where you played poker, thebuilding where that great Jewishbakery was. The first time you misssomething, you wonder: Am Iremembering that right? But overtime, the old place fades from yourmemory; there's nothing to remindyou of the friend, of the pokergames, of those macaroons. Theeffect is like having Alzheimer's,only in reverse: You live in the pres-ent. Your past disappears.

Houston gardens are becoming wilder, more colorful and informal
