This issue marks the start of our eleventh year producing Housetrends here in Tampa Bay. Since launching our first issue back in 2001, we’ve showcased more than 200 homes across the area. From quaint cot-tages basking in the sun on the Gulf of Mexico to sprawling estates situated along the Intracoastal Waterway, we are grate-ful to all the families we’ve featured over the years, for opening the doors to their homes and allowing us to peek inside.

This issue carries on the tradition of fea-turing the latest trends in interior design, kitchens and outdoor living spaces. Our cover story takes you inside Lois and Isaac Mallah’s Cheval-area home. They recently embarked on a massive renovation to update their house to complement the contemporary kitchen they remodeled a few years ago. And if you are thinking about adding a pool to your back yard then you’ll want to read about Jim and Cheryl Bender’s journey to create a resort-inspired getaway behind their Odessa home.

For even more home and garden design and inspiration check out our website, Housetrends.com.

We’ll see you in March, when our next issue is set to arrive in your mailbox.

Sincerely,

Bob and Judy DeLuca and the Housetrends staff 40

Finding a Perfect Balance

Home renovation marries elegance and comfort

By Lyla Haggard | Photos by Johan Roetz

You know the feeling. All of a sudden you gaze around the room, in this

instance the home office, and everything seems just a bit worn, scratched or

dull after fifteen years of family life. That’s what happened to Lois and Isaac

Mallah. While the renovation started in the office, by the time they were fin-

ished five years later, the “freshening” project had extended throughout their

four bedroom, two den, 3,800-square-foot Cheval-area home.

Creating flowLois now advises that the most important thing to do in preparation for a renovation is to find the right designer. She admits that a few years ago they were very lucky to walk into the Ethan Allen Home Interiors store in Citrus Park and be greeted by Mario DiPietro, an award-winning design consultant for the company. The Mallahs were just beginning to shop around, so meeting DiPietro was excellent timing. “The key concept is to discuss what the clients’ lifestyle is like, what they can live with and what they can’t live with,” notes DiPietro. “In this case, Lois and Isaac and I were immediately on the same wave length and easily started putting together a master plan and palette for the house.”

Jeffrey Wallace of Park Avenue Designs had remodeled the kitchen a few years earlier and now DiPietro wanted to coordinate the fam-ily room/den with similar textures and colors. The kitchen has flat panel cabinet doors of dark rift-cut oak with an espresso stain and countertops of Neapolitan granite. Next to the kitchen is a moderate and open TV/family room followed by a floor-to-ceiling wall to separate the to-be-remodeled office, which is Isaac’s. To complement the kitchen and the family room’s dramatic fireplace, DiPietro suggested adding a comfy, long L-shaped sofa sectional surround-ing a coffee table composed of four glass and metal cubes that are adjustable.

Isaac’s office was given a clean, contemporary feel with amber Appalachian cherry wood, top grade Aniline-dyed leather and 42-inch hidden tilt window shutters. A new sleep-sofa adds function as well as comfort. Connecting these spaces is the ice blue mineral shade wall paint that allows the three areas to flow together with understated flair. In Lois’ den, the furniture is primarily ash with an espresso finish, a top grain cognac leather sectional sofa and a hand-knotted rug from New Zealand, whose cool pal-ette gives a contemporary design with a nod to the past. The brushed steel coffee tables, power recliners and a desk comprised of a black leather top and saw horse style metal luggage rack base define the concept of relaxation and efficiency.

Form and functionThe more formal entry to the home provides access to the the living and dining rooms, which received new vanilla-toned carpet and—most importantly to DiPietro—the grand piano was shifted from one side of the living room to the other to improve the balance and make the space more modern, elegant and inviting. To the left of the front door, the 60-inch round mahogany dining table plus a long burl ash buffet add a touch of art deco to the feel of the space. The frets on the table legs and backs of the dining chairs draw the eye upward to a gorgeous Italian Murano glass chandelier that the Mallahs purchased in Venice on vacation.

Isaac was impressed that he could trust DiPietro, who didn’t try to “improve” his taste. After discussing what the Mallahs were thinking about for each room, DiPietro would arrange certain furniture pieces in the store or draw a design board. “If we wanted wood, he showed us wood; whatever we were interested in, he would show us examples that were tasteful and sophisticated but not over the top,” Isaac says.

The master suite, with mineral blue walls and matching drapes, is modish and pleasing to the eye, but not so stylish that you hesitate to touch anything. The platinum and gold finishes and stainless steel furniture give a sparkle that still encourages relaxation. “The poster bed is modern and elegant,” says DiPietro, who added a mahogany zebra armoire and mother-of-pearl lamps to complete the sophisticated look.

Personal touchesBoth Lois and Isaac have learned what is really necessary to live with and what can be done without. “What I liked best about working with Mario is that he listened to us and then brought choices for us to look at that fit our tastes,” says Lois. “There was no disagreement; if we didn’t love it, he went back and found something else that fit the bill perfectly.”

DiPietro says he appreciated the fact that the Mallahs knew what they liked and were able to express what they wanted. “That makes it so much easier for a designer to find just the right thing—whether a large piece of furniture or a small objet d’art—to finish off a room with precise balance.”

“It feels just grand to walk into my house now,” says Lois. “It’s been so overwhelming to live through these renovations that now I just breathe a deep sigh of relief when I open the door and know what a pleasure it is to be home.”

Some folks are true blue when it comes to their

favorite color. Myriad polls have shown that blue is an

overwhelming favorite. What makes it so? Lighter blues

prompt thoughts of tranquility, understanding, peace,

health and heaven. Darker blues beget visions of

knowledge, opportunity, integrity and loyalty.

The right mind-expanding hue engenders cre-

ativity and exploration. One look at an impossibly

crystal blue sky on a clear autumn day makes

life worth living, banishing–ironically–the “blues.”

From pale aqua to the deepest indigo, there’s

sure to be a hue that elevates your home into a

blue heaven.

Cheryl and Jim Bender moved to the Odessa

countryside after several years of living on the

beach, they knew exactly what they wanted. “It

has always been our dream to have a negative

edge pool,” Cheryl explains. They couldn’t build

their dream pool at their beachfront property, so

when they built this spacious home in the coun-

try with a large rear lawn leading down to a small

lake, they knew they had found the perfect spot

for this long-delayed wish.

Creating visual interestThe pool is the focal point of the Benders’ lovely backyard living space. The free-form design naturally curves and undu-lates around planter beds, twin beach entries and the curving walls of the raised spa. The stacked stone face of the spa overflows into the pool, creating the gen-tle music of running water. The far end of the pool culminates in a dramatic negative edge, which cascades into the moat below. It is flanked on either side by flaming fire pots with water spouts.

Cheryl was an active participant in designing this pool. “I spent days on the internet going through photos of pools,” she says. “I took ideas from many different sources and put them together.”

Her collaborator on this project was Pat O’Connell of Landmark Pools who had also built their previous pool. “She’s on a lake setting but has a big yard,” O’Connell says. “They moved from the Gulf to the country and we wanted something real natural looking back there.”

Unlike most pools, this pool is situated perpendicular to the house as opposed to the standard horizontal style running lengthwise across the back. “It really worked well because it leads the eye down the length of the pool to the negative edge feature and past, to the lake beyond,” Cheryl says.

O’Connell points out that a negative edge pool does not have to have water behind it to work. “I have so many people come to me and say ‘I’d love a negative edge pool but I’m not on water.’ It doesn’t mat-ter because it’s about the visual element. This pool flows down into a trough with landscaping behind it, which works great. Or, you can create your own negative edge by going from pool to pool,” he adds.

Up and coming trendsAccording to O’Connell, the next big thing with pools is the No Edge pool; also called a Perimeter Overflow Pool. With these pools, all the water spills into a hidden trough on all sides and is pumped back in. There is no direct suction on the pool. It is all gravity-fed. “It’s kind of cool looking. I did one recently that looked like it was suspended in air,” he says.

Cheryl and Jim’s pool is on a salt chlo-rinator. O’Connell predicts that soon all pools will be using this technology. “It makes the water more comfortable for swimming and it is better for you. You use less chlorine and it kills bacteria evenly 24/7,” he says.

The pool patio area was actually built up during the construction process to create a higher platform for the pool itself. Patio tiles of Leonardo tumbled travertine used throughout give the area a rich look. A recently completed, screened-in, outdoor kitchen is directly adjacent to the pool. Featuring a full cooking area, a two-sided gas fireplace and plenty of seating, this space offers a wonderful retreat for dining al fresco in comfort. “The mosquitoes here will eat you alive, so this is a favorite spot,” Cheryl jokes.

Lush surroundingsA lush, green lawn of Zoysia grass runs around the pool and down to the lake-front. As the owners of two rambunctious young Irish Setters, Cheryl and Jim want-ed a grass that would hold up to all the abuse that two boisterous dogs can dish out. With the Zoysia grass, they found it. “St. Augustine gets too many bugs and Bahia would be trampled. Zoysia is the most expensive but the most durable. We are so happy with it. They haven’t been able to destroy it yet,” she laughs.

Zoysia grass is a thick turf with fine, soft blades. It is a slow grower that takes full sun, needs less water once established and can be cut very low.

Water cascades over the negative edge and into a moat where it is recirculated back into the pool.

Page 46: Housetrends Tampa Bay

46 housetrends.com

Tommy Todd, of Tommy Todd Landscape & Design, did all of the landscape and grounds work. He says the Zoysia grass also complements the equestrian-inspired façade of the home. “The Benders did a great job of making the home fit the community with a more traditional feel in front. We wanted a fine-textured bluegrass look like you would find up north versus St. Augustine which goes with a more Mediterranean style,” he says.

Todd, who has also worked on previous homes for the Benders, focused on colorful but more traditional plantings along the front of the home and a more tropical pallet in the rear to fit the pool. Colorful, low maintenance plantings enhance the yard and pool area. Specimen palms are combined with colorful plantings of plumbago, spider lily, Mexican petunias and other varieties for a lovely mix that does not shed leaves in the pool.

Along the edges of the yard, specimen trees and lower border plants are used to add interest and structure to the space as well

as camouflage the pool pump area. One of the highlights is a clump of lovely Dura Heat River Birch trees, which adds interest-ing texture and design.

Planning for the futureCheryl’s plan to include a pair of sunning platforms is a testament to her vision. “I pictured myself in a lounge chair on one of them, watching my future grandchildren play on the other,” she says.

While she didn’t have grandchildren at the time, Cheryl and Jim recently received the happy news that they were going to be grandparents, turning her vision into reality.

Low-maintenance tropical plantings and Specimen palms create an inviting back yard.

Add dry ingredients to the large mixing bowl and fold the mixture together with apples. Divide the mixture evenly into muffin cups, filling each about 2/3 full. Sprinkle tops with dried apple confetti. Sprinkle sugar topping over apples.

Bake 13 to 16 minutes, or until toothpick inserted comes out clean. Allow muffins to cool in the pan for 15 minutes before removing. Makes 1 dozen muffins.

Mr. Menaul’s clients will often see and purchase his

artwork on display in his gallery in Clearwater, off of

his website, at a home décor store or at an art show.

If a different color or color palette is needed, one can

provide him with a specified paint color or fabric

swatch. He will re-work the artwork to coordinate. If a

different size is needed, the piece can be resized or re-

worked to fit the space on the wall. If an entirely new

one-of-a-kind piece would be more ideal for a specific

wall, he can create that as well.

Email a photo of your wall needing artwork and Mr.

Menaul can “drop in” different art suggestions or “drop

in” the customized piece needed to see how it will look

on your wall, in advance of creating the finished piece.

Mr. Menaul says, “This takes all the guesswork out of

selecting artwork. There is nothing like seeing artwork

on your own wall to know whether it will work or

not—before committing to purchasing it.

Elegant new kitchen stands the test of time

By Christina Kleiner

Photos by Johan Roetz

As family dynamics continue to evolve,

so do the homes where we reside.

Gone are the days of walled-off hous-

es, where children run off to the living

room to watch television and guests

retreat to the den for after dinner

drinks. Today, the kitchen is more

than just a place where mom cooks

dinner. It’s the central hub for daily life.

It is here where you will find children

working on craft projects and home-

work, husbands and wives catching

up over coffee and families gather-

ing together for holidays and special

events. ✺ Tim and Beth Gregson con-

sidered all of these scenarios when

they started designing the kitchen in

their new Largo home a few years

ago. “Our three daughters were a bit

younger at that time, we knew that

we needed a large space that would

grow with them,” Tim says.

Thoughtful elementsThe 6,500-square-foot Spanish Mediter-ranean home was a labor of love for the Gregsons. The impressive home sits on a family-owned piece of property with spec-tacular views of the Gulf of Mexico. For Tim and Beth, creating an eye-catching interior was just as important as the out-door views, and their kitchen sat at the heart of everything. Their builder, David Brandon, of Brandon Construction, sug-gested they meet with Jeffrey Wallace of

Park Avenue Designs to build a cooking space to fit their lifestyle. “We had roughly 440 square feet to work with,” Wallace says. “Beth and Tim’s goal was to create an open, invit-ing space where cooking and entertaining can take place simultaneously.”

A large curved island, which offers plenty of seating and counter space, creates visual separation between the kitchen and adjoining family room. “We wanted that open floor plan feel, but we knew we needed the two rooms to shine on their own,” says Tim. “We also used the elaborate wood-beamed and tray ceilings to help achieve that goal.”

The Gregsons are also thankful they included the smaller prep island in the center of the kitchen. The maple island, which features a distressed look, is topped with Black Walnut and houses a small prep sink, extra seating and a microwave drawer. “We pur-posely designed this island to be different, so it stands out,” Tim says as he points to the perimeter cherry cabinetry, which is accented with a soft brown glaze and creamy granite countertops.

OPENING PAGE: Old-world inspired pendant lights hang above the two-tiered island in the kitchen. OPPOSITE: The impressive custom range hood and back-splash, comprised of tumbled stone and metal inserts, cre-ate an elegant focal point. TOP LEFT: Carved legs add char-acter to the cabinetry. BOTTOM LEFT: The tray ceiling is lined with stained wood molding to match the hardwood floors and baseboards. LEFT: The homeowners’ kids can easily reach the micro-wave located in the prep island.

Tips

for a successful kitchen design

✺ DrESS IT uP: The traditional furniture look continues

to reign in the kitchen. The more you can dress up

your kitchen, the better. Elaborate molding, corbels and

carved cabinet legs, like those seen in the Gregsons’

kitchen, all help to create a rich, finished look.

✺ ADDED CONvENIENCES: Position the micro-

wave close to the refrigerator. “Nine times out of ten

you’re pulling something out of the refrigerator and

popping it into the microwave,” Wallace says. “It only

makes sense for the two to be in close proximity.”

✺ COOL GrOuPS: The flow of the kitchen is very

important. Group tall elements, such as larger refriger-

ators and freezers, together. Keep the cooking on one

wall and the refrigerator on an opposing side. “This

way, if you have more than one cook in the kitchen,

everyone has their own space and they’re not stepping

on each other’s toes,” Wallace says.

Added perksManaging a busy household takes up most of their time, so creating a clutter-free environment was especially impor-tant to the Gregsons. Every element in the kitchen has its own place, including the impressive built-in area for the full size Miele refrigerator and freezer. The appliances are tucked into the wall and expertly hidden behind cabinet panels. Two cabinets in the center hold the coffee machine and toaster, which pop out and include small counters for added conve-nience. “This was an ingenious addition to our kitchen,” Tim says. “Everything is within reach, but is easily put away and hidden when we don’t need it.”

Tim says the kitchen has brought his family closer together. “Even though we’re all busy, once a week we sit down around the breakfast table, for a quick meal or snack, and talk about what is going on in our lives.”
