an artist will not make history”

Until 2005 the artist came out with a successful retrospective of all the works she had made since 1975. Since then she has had four solo exhibitions and two group exhibitions, including in the ARTACASA Gallery in Amsterdam. In recent years, she now focu-ses more on drawing and painting.

‘Love in all its shapes’This usually the subject in the gouaches and pen drawings of Carolien van den Berg. She mainly became well-known as an actress.

About her inspiration according to Van den Berg:

"Between 1975 and 1990 I lived in the centre of Amsterdam, in the opposite of a brothel. There were for example 'The bulls', a solid set of twin sisters who were married happily and lived in Lelystad, but during the week the red light district was their work. Or Hetty, a quiet and somewhat older woman, who always sat knitting behind the window. What struck me was that although their profession these women always kept their pride. In their eyes you could see the struggle to survive despite everything. In the cream parlor from Truus and Lio Tofani all sorts of people from the neighborhood came together, to discuss ‘live’ while they had their cappucino or ice cream. Still are all these impressions in my mind: those places, those people that street. "
