House Bill 5, High School Graduation Requirements &
Alvin High School Elective Fair
House Bill 5 was recently adopted by the Texas State Legislator. This bill dramatically changed the requirements for high school graduation in Texas.
The State of Texas changed the graduation requirements from 24 credits to 22 credit.
Also included in this bill was a reduction of standardized test needed to graduate from high school.
House Bill 5 will not be implemented until 2014-15 school year.

Students must complete four total credits of English Language Arts.
English IEnglish IIEnglish IIIAdvanced English Course (i.e. English IV).

Students must complete three total credits of Mathematics.
Algebra IGeometry Advanced Mathematics (i.e. Algebra II, Pre
Calculus, or Calculus).

Students must complete three total credits of Science.
Biology IPC or Advanced Science Course Advanced Science Course (i.e. chemistry,
physics, aquatic science).

Students must complete three total credits of Social Studies.

The passage of House Bill 5 allowed for schools to give endorsements to students for completion of certain classes.
Curriculum requirements for the endorsements include:
- Four Credits in Mathematics Credits - Four Credits in Science Credits - Two additional Elective Credits

- science, including environmental science
- technology, including computer science
- engineering - advanced math

This endorsement allows students to select courses from the curriculum of each endorsement area and earn credits in a variety of advanced courses from multiple content areas sufficient to complete the distinguished level of achievement.

A student can earn distinguished levels of achievement by successfully completing:
- Four credits in mathematics, which must include Algebra II.
