Poul Houe (1946- ) received his degree in Danish language and literature (and Mathematics) from the University of Aarhus in 1970/71 and was a Research Associate (‘postdoc’) of Scandinavian literature at the University of Aarhus 1971-73. He also received his diploma in education in Århus (Aarhus Cathedral School) and has been an instructor in Danish at Marselisborg Teachers Training College (1969-70) and at the Royal Danish School of Educational Studies in Århus (1971-73). From 1976 to 1989 he served as a government appointed examiner at the Danish Teachers Certificate Exam. He taught Danish language and literature as a visiting associate professor at Uppsala University (incl. Umeå University and Örebro University College) 1973-78, and is currently (full) professor of Scandinavian languages and literature at the University of Minnesota, where he has taught since 1979. (Since coming to Minnesota, he has taught 16 different grad and undergrad courses plus developed another 20 different undergrad and grad courses, out of which he has taught 17, incl. honors and freshman seminars, a German graduate seminar, and three courses and seminars at the universities of Amsterdam and Vienna.) He was associate chair of the Department of Scandinavian Studies 1985-88, director of the Center for Nordic Studies 1985-94, and has served regularly on various departmental, college, and national committees—most recently: GSD’s Faculty Merit Review Committee (2011-12; chair 2009), CLA’s Promotion and Tenure Committee (member 2006-09), and the National Fulbright Screening Committee (2008 and 2009). The founding editor of The Nordic Roundtable Papers (17 vols., 1989-94), he has contributed many entries on Scandinavian literature to several encyclopedia, incl. Den Store Danske Encyclopædi and the Encyclopedia Britannica, for whose online edition he has also been a consultant. An editor and author of many scholarly books and articles on modern Danish and Swedish literature, European humanism, travel & exile literature, he has (co-)arranged annual professional meetings—e.g., for the Society for the Advancement of Scandinavian Study (1983)—and a number of national and international conferences—e.g., on Isak Dinesen (1985), August Strindberg (2000), Hans Christian Andersen (2005), Søren Kierkegaard (2006), and Astrid Lindgren (2007)—and has been a regular reviewer for and contributor of critiques on American and Scandinavian culture to Scandinavian and American newspapers, magazines, and journals; in addition, he has given seminars and presented (invited) papers, (keynote) addresses, and (plenary) lectures at a large number of academic institutions, conferences and universities in North America and Europe. He serves on editoral boards and steering committees abroad and was a visiting professor at the University of Amsterdam in 1988. He is listed in both Danish and American biographical journals and ‘Who’s Who’ publications and has received numerous research grants and awards from university and extra mural agencies in America and overseas, incl. the Danish Research Council for the Humanities 1994-96.
