Hospitality Training Facility for Penrith

Students from Glenmore Park High School were invited to the launch of the college to provide training for hospitality students in the Penrith area. James Packer will be investing funds to partner with Penrith Panthers Club. Our students were very excited to hear about the traineeships and apprenticeships.

It has been a great start to the year with students settling into school work with enthusiasm. We look forward to seeing all students achieve success in their learning. Information regarding school news can be found on our website and the P&C meetings are an opportunity to meet other parents and staff.

There has been significant media focus on education funding recently, with the NSW government reducing education funding by $1.7 billion for all schools. This will impact on everything we do in schools. The Gonski Review found that Australia is investing too little in schools and the way the money is currently distributed to schools is unfair. You can make a difference by supporting teachers and parents across Australia by convincing the Federal Government to act on Gonski and provide an increase in funds for schools. Congratulations to Dimitri Kambanis who achieved an outstanding HSC result with 3 subjects in Band 6, i.e. over 90% in Chemistry, General Maths and Senior Science. Dimi will be studying for his Bachelor of Science at Sydney University. Congratulations to Lachlan Fisher for a Band 6 in General Maths. We wish them both every success in their further studies.

Schoolkids Bonus Do you know about the Schoolkids Bonus? It is a new cash payment to help eligible families and students with the costs of primary and secondary school studies. If you receive a family or income support payment, including Family Tax Benefit Part A, you could be eligible to receive $410 a year for each primary student and $820 a year for each secondary student, with half paid in January and half paid in July. Check your eligibility by visiting Australia.gov.au/schoolkidsbonus and if you think you might have missed out on the January payment, contact Centrelink—either in person at a Centrelink-Medicare Office or by calling 132 468.

As part of their contribution to the school, the Senior Leadership Team organised a Valentines Day event for the school. In the week leading up to Valentines Day, the Senior Leadership Team sold roses and delivered them to that person‘s Valentine on the 14th. ―Pick-up‖ lines that were displayed on cut out pink hearts around the school, raised positive school spirit, as the pupils were keen to try them out on each other. In total, the SLT raised $270.00, which will be put towards further events for the school. Thank you to all that participated. Paige Geerin STL Co-ordinator

Glenmore Park High School‘s language teacher, Mrs. Garrad, was given the opportunity to attend a NSW TEV Study Program to Indonesia during the Christmas break. She had a wonderful time, describing the holiday in her own words: ―The outstanding experience of this trip was the friendliness of everyone we met. The culture of Indonesia is very complex and it was wonderful to gain so much first hand information and have the opportunity to practise speaking Indonesian. In this photo I am exchanging gifts with representatives of the Ministry of Religious Affairs – one of the many institutions who welcomed us during the trip.‖

7S and several other Year 7 students have been frantically working on the mini

GPHS Archaeological Dig. The students have been excavating, identifying,

classifying, and reassembling a range of 20th century artefacts. In the process they

have honed their use of historical questions (Who, What, Where, When, Why and

How?) and have experienced the frustrations that plague modern archaeologists as

they uncover the past and try to make sense of their findings.

Zacharie Anzallotti and Connor Czapracki in 7N had

the daunting task of trying to sort through the remains

of ten plastic dinosaurs sets. By the end of the lesson,

the boys had classified the remains into four different

species of dinosaurs and were undertaking the

monumental task of trying to reassemble each of the

dinosaurs.

A big congratulations to 7S, as all the groups

correctly identified their artefacts in a record time

of 30 minutes. Dylan Weise quickly identified an

old 8mm film camera, which many of his class

mates had never seen before. Dylan used great

investigative skills to interpret the evidence before

presenting his hypothesis that he unearthed a

camera.

Mitchell De La Garde confidently assisted those around him to interpret the

sources. Mia Nikolic‘s team had proudly pieced this plate together. Well Done!

We also dug up ―Ratmose‖ to observe how successfully our

mummification technique was. In September 2012, 7E

dissected a rat in Science with Mr Radley. We decided to

test out the ancient Egyptian mummification techniques on

the body. Ratmose was interred in a preparation that

mirrored the natron used by the Ancient Egyptians. After 4

months of being buried in a box covered in salt and

bicarbonate of soda in our book room, 2013 7S dug him up

to see that the process worked perfectly.

Chanel Breeze of Year 10 has been a busy young sports person who has recently shifted her focus to the sport of Rowing. Chanel has been training with the Nepean Rowing Club for over a year now, and has been preparing for the NSW State and National Rowing Championships which is going to be held at the Sydney International Regatta Centre. Chanel spent from January 1 to January 17 in an intensive Rowing Development Camp to prepare for the Taree Summer Regatta and upcoming championship events. She has continued high intensity training in lead up to the NSW State Championships, training up to 13 hours per week. Her coach, Mr Neil Holmes says ―Chanel‘s dedication and commitment will have her performing at her peak physically for her upcoming championship competitions. Chanel is relatively new to competitive rowing and had to overcome an injury. Despite this she has performed extremely well to be able to be selected to compete at the NSW State Championships this early in her rowing career‖. Some of her recent 2013 achievements at the Taree Summer Regatta (Manning River) include: 1

st place, Women‘s D Grade Double

1st place, Women‘s D Grade Quad

3rd

place, Women‘s Under 17 Double Scull 4

th place, Women‘s D Grade, Single Scull

Our school community and her club is very proud of Chanel and her ability to work hard as a student and athlete, balancing school and training to be the best she can. We wish Chanel all the best of luck at the ‗NSW State Championships‘ and ‗Head of the River Girls Regatta‘ competitions later this year. If any student is interested in getting involved in Rowing please contact Mr Neil Holmes from Nepean Rowing Club for more information on 4731 2255 or 0412 054 648. Taher Safadi Sports Organiser

Fraser House Captain Jessica Elliott of Year 12, recently competed in the Futsal Federation of Australia‘s National Futsal Tournament, which was held at the Australian Institute of Sport stadium in Canberra over the January school holidays. Jessica has had an outstanding history of successful sporting representation here at Glenmore Park High School for numerous sports and also outside of school with her representative teams in both FUTSAL and Soccer. For the 3

rd year

in a row Jessica was selected to play FUTSAL for the New South Wales under 19s Thunder team. The National Futsal Tournament was televised on SBS across Australia and was played between the 7

th to the 11

th of January. Jessica was lucky enough to captain her team against Queensland,

ACT, Victoria and NSW Lightning, the secondary team for NSW, playing two games against each, with the top two teams at the end of the rounds proceeding to the grand final. Finishing first on the leader board, Jessica‘s team met ACT in a heated final. Worry kicked in after ACT quickly scored first, then soon after Jessica Elliott helped her team gain some momentum and scored the next 2 goals which left them leading 4-1 by half-time. After the break ACT came back firing, and the score seemed to quickly reach 4-4, but the wake-up call made Captain Jessica Elliott and her team pull their heads in and as a result walked out victorious with a 7-4 Grand final win. This was Jessica‘s third National grand final win in a row! Also, this year, for the first time ever, the Football Federation of Australia announced an Australian Youth Women‘s (Under 19s) and an Open Women‘s team, which was to be named at the end of the tournament, after a careful analysis of every player‘s skill, quality and attributes Jessica was selected in the Youth Women‘s team. When interviewed Jessica said ―I am sincerely grateful for all the experiences I‘ve been offered so far and look forward to going through the countless and life-changing chances I‘ve yet to come across‖. Jessica has always been a wonderful role model at Glenmore Park High School, captaining her school FUTSAL and Outdoor soccer teams to success over the years. She has shown a great level of maturity, dedication and enthusiasm to being the best she can both as student and an athlete. The school community is extremely proud of her achievements and hopes to see her continue her journey to success. We wish Jessica all the best in her future sporting endeavours. The Highlights of Jessica‘s grand final can be viewed at: http://www.sbs.com.au/ondemand/video/17266243901/Futsal-National-Championships-Part-4. Taher Safadi Sports Organiser

In January I was one of two group leaders who took 17 students to the United States for 20 days on the Educational World Travel, G‘Day USA tour. Students from Glenmore Park, Nepean and Hills Sports High came along and we all had the time of our lives. We spent 3 days in San Francisco where we toured Alcatraz and walked over the Golden Gate Bridge. We took some awesome photos from there! We then flew to Seattle where we spent 10 days and were hosted with Tumwater High School. We had the experience of staying with an American family and going to school with them. We went skiing, shopping at outlet malls (got some great bargains!!) and went to San Diego to visit Old San Diego Town. We then flew to Los Angeles to visit Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm and Universal Studios before flying home. Everyone had so much fun on this trip and students have made lifelong friends with their American hosts and they are still talking about their holiday now. I am organising another trip in January 2015 so anyone interested should contact Judy in the School Print room for more information. To attend, students must be aged between 14 and 19 as at January 2015. A representative from EWT will attend our school assembly towards the end of Term 1 and will have flyers and information then for anyone interested in coming on this experience of a life time. On 11

th February, 2013, 7 brave staff members ventured out with 139 Years 7 and 10

students to the annual Year 7 Peer Support camp. The weather ranged from bearable to appalling, but the group was determined to have fun and face new challenges regardless. Rain, mosquitoes and the terrible sense of humour of some of the camp leaders could not dampen our spirits as we climbed, swung, leaped and paddled our way through a jam packed program of activities. Commando Night was a hit with the students and staff alike, and it was fantastic to see students work together in teams in an attempt to outsmart their teachers. Of course the teachers were victorious, but we would like to invite the year group to a rematch in Year 9 if there is any dispute…!! Many students have reported making new friends at camp, while a number felt that they had been challenged to step out of their comfort zones by the activities on offer. I would like to commend the Year 7 group for their determination, perseverance and good humour throughout. It was an absolute pleasure to spend 3 days with such an outstanding group of young people! Special mention must go to our Year 10 Peer Support leaders who conducted themselves in such a mature and compassionate manner at camp. I am sure we will see some of the future leaders of the school coming from their midst. Finally, to Mr Dudley, Ms Quiney, Ms Bryant, Mr Bartolo, Ms Casey and Ms Sturgess, who let their inner commando shine; thank you for all your hard work and good cheer at camp. The trip would not have been so successful without you! Ally Crawshaw Year 7 Adviser

We begin each school year at Glenmore Park High School with a motivational media presentation shown on three panoramic projection screens with state of the art DVD synchronised projectors, making an image 13 metres wide and 5 metres high. This type of media technology in a school grips the student and staff‘s attention like no other program. This year‘s presentation is titled “MAD” (Making a Difference). When we‘re young it seems that our whole life stretches in front of us and we have unlimited opportunities and endless time to do everything we want to do. What we often don‘t realise is that if we don‘t make a conscious effort to plan for our lives, opportunities and time can slip by and we are left with little but disappointment. Going along with the crowd may seem like the fun and easy thing to do, but if we really want to make something of our lives, we may need to take another approach. Our presentation will be held on Friday 1st March, 2013 and will cost the students only $2.00. Students will pay as they enter the hall and any student not wishing to attend will be doing work in their normal lessons. Ben Mackie Head Teacher PDHPE

Glenmore Park High School Assessment Committee is proud to launch our new junior assessment policy and assessment booklets. We felt it was necessary to train the junior students to develop their skills in planning, organisational and time management skills to develop their work ethic in preparation for the HSC. To ensure students are familiar with their rights and responsibilities under the policy, the Year Advisers were asked to explain how the assessment policy works. Also, each child has been issued with a hard copy of the book to assist them with managing their assessments throughout the year. There is an accurate calendar on pages 12 and 13 of each book mapping out all the assessments over the course of the year. We did have a few small glitches where the dates did not match the calendar on some of the assessment schedules that appear in the Years 7, 9 and 10 books. Thanks to the dedication of one of our P&C parents, we were alerted to these issues and were able to rectify the situation immediately. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused you. Amended copies of the booklets have been placed on the website for your child‘s reference. The schedules outline the nature, percentage weighting and outcomes assessed in each task. The student‘s performance in these tasks will comprise their results reported in the half yearly and yearly reports.

Unlike primary school, homework in high school is a different structure. In some primary schools, students would generally receive one homework sheet on Monday from their one teacher, which would be due on Friday. In high school, students now have at least 8 different teachers that they may see between 5 – 8 hours a fortnight. Students will have up to 51 formal assessment tasks to manage on top of homework, sporting commitments, work commitments and any other extra-curricular activities. Some teachers will issue homework sheets, some will not depending on the unit of work. It is not possible to place all the homework on the school‘s website at all times. Staff will assist students to become more responsible for tracking their homework in their diaries by making this a part of their lesson organisation. When assessment notifications/tasks are issued to students, these will be placed on the website to support your child. Please be aware that assessment tasks that are to be conducted under examination conditions will only have a notification published not the actual task. We have a section in the student‘s diary explaining our Homework Policy. If you have any concerns about your child‘s homework, please check their diary and then call their class teacher to discuss your concerns. Kaylene McCormick Head Teacher, Teaching & Learning

Welcome to the Science Faculty at Glenmore Park High School for another exciting year! The Science teachers would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Dimi Kambanis and Lachlan Snow Fisher for their excellent HSC results last year and in particular for their fantastic results in the Science subjects. We wish them well in their future endeavours. We also welcome Mr Albyn Randall to the teaching staff of the faculty. As the new year unfolds, a walk around the laboratories will see Year 7 students busily learning how to use the equipment in experiments; Year 8 investigating the workings of plants; Year 9 dissecting brains as they learn about the nervous system; Year 10 performing experiments on themselves in their assessment task ‗The Teenager...scientifically tested’; Year 11 making the transition to a senior approach to investigating science and Year 12 students fast approaching the mid-way mark of their HSC courses.

Interested parents are invited to follow the links on the school web site to view the current homework assessment tasks set for students. These will be updated as necessary through the year. In the near future or possibly by the time of printing, Year 12 Biology and Senior Science students will be visiting the Museum of Human Disease at the University of NSW to enhance their studies of the human body. Similarly, Year 11 students will be visiting the water treatment plant at St Marys as a part of their ecological investigations. We look forward with high expectations and enthusiasm to the year ahead as we build upon the successes of previous years. I take this opportunity also to welcome parents of new students and invite them, along with all parents of our students, to contact the Science staff should they have any enquiries about our subjects and what we learn. Students have settled in well to their new classes for 2013. By the end of week 4, most classes will have received their first assessment notification. Parents are invited to check the Student Assessment Handbooks and/or the school website for due dates. Teachers are busy establishing class routines. As part of this, Year 7 students have just completed their Library orientation lessons. We encourage all students to spend at least ten minutes a night reading – short stories, graphic novels and magazines are all good options. Debating will begin again soon. Students, please see Ms. Kovac if you are interested in participating. We look forward to a busy, but exciting, year ahead. Yvette Woodrow Relieving Head Teacher English/History

With everyone returning back to schools across NSW, it‘s important to be on top of asthma management now more so than ever. The ―back to school spike‖ is likely to occur. This is a well-documented increase in hospital admissions in both school and preschool aged children with asthma which occurs around two weeks after children go back, with the spike generally peaking in mid to late February. This spike in asthma is strongly associated with an increased exposure to viruses, a common trigger for asthma, and may also be due to children‘s asthma management routine lapsing over the holidays. We recommend that parents provide our school with an updated asthma care plan, or a written action plan completed in consultation with the child's doctor. Annette Quiney Head Teacher, Welfare
