Breastfeeding gives the best start in life – not only from a psychological, but also nourishment-psychological aspect. Drinking from mother‘s breast requires a functional interplay between the jaws, palate, tongue and lips, so breastfeeding also supports baby‘s healthy oral and speech development. It was from these fi ndings that the orthodontic NUK Teat was developed.

NUK is not round for a reasonThe dental practitioners Prof. Dr. Dr. Balters and Dr. med. dent. Müller discovered the female nipple changes its shape during breastfeeding, thus ensuring an optimal coordination of all muscles of the mouth and jaws. This precise asymmetric shape has, to this day, been taken as a model for all NUK Teats and Soothers and has resulted in NUK being the No. 1 brand in German hospitals.

Newborns with cleft lip/jaw/palate nearly always face problems with food intake: they fi nd it diffi cult to produce the negative pressure required to achieve sucking.

NUK has developed special teats based on the specifi c anatomical conditions of babies with a cleft, taking pre-surgery treatments into consideration. Due to its softness and fl exibility, natural latex has proven to be the only material suitable for these products. These special teats are compatible with all standard-neck bottles.

For specifi c demandsNUK Cleft Lip Teat A teat for infants who have a unilateral cleft with implemented palate plate (drinking plate) or – exceptionally – also bilateral clefts with implemented palate plate.The NUK Cleft Lip Teat promotes the sucking, chewing and milking action of the infant and, in this way, helps infants achieve an almost totally natural sucking process. The often experienced symptoms, such as choking, burping or even vomiting, are reduced considerably. Pre-surgery orthodontic treat-ments will not be affected. Please clean and sterilise before use.

NUK Cleft Palate Teat A teat for infants with untreated cleft palate. With arched top to close the open cleft of the palate whilst preventing nourishment from reaching the respiratory tract. NUK Disposable Bottles made from polypropylene (PP) are ready to use and make optimal use of the daily hos-pital routine. They off er a maximum level of hygiene and save time consuming procedures such as preparation and cleaning . Moreover, the bottle material is extremely light-weight and robust .

The range comprises four diff erent sizes. The 80 ml and 180 ml bottles have a slim bottom diameter of ca . 45 mm . The 140 ml and 230 ml bottles are standard-neck bottles with a bottom diameter of ca . 53 mm . In addition, all bot-tles have a fi eld for individual marking.

NUK Reusable Bottles traditionally stand for premium quality and are fi rmly established in many hospitals. This particularly refers to NUK Glass Bottles which – thanks to their special material – can be indefi nitely reused. The reusable bottles made from polypropylene (PP) represent a light-weight and break-resistant alternative – also available in two sizes.

Applied as therapeutic instrument it helps children and adults to normalise malfunctions in oral motor activity – e.g. in cases of oral breathing, disorders of sucking, chewing, swallowing, speaking as well as mimic gestures.

NUK Therapeutic Trainers can be applied for example in speech, orthodontic, physiotherapeutic practice in myo-therapeutic training, according to Beatriz A. E. Padovan.
