Horticulture for Livelihood Security and Economic Growth
Invitation
Many developing countries are facing the problem of decel-erated agricultural growth at macro level coupled with falling realprices of farm products and its declining share to GDP withoutany considerable shift of population from agriculture to non-agriculture sector. Added to these, is the problem of depleting anddegrading natural resource base for farming, threatening the verylivelihood security of a majority of subsistence farmers and thefarming industry is becoming non-remunerative in many countriesof the developing world.
In India, the policies and programmes designed and imple-mented have not adequately addressed to the problems ofagriculture sector. The failure to identify right growth prioritieswithin farming sector and to design and implement appropriateagricultural development policies and programmes have culmi-nated in farmers’ distress. At this juncture horticultural crops, comprising of fruits, vegetables and mushrooms, ornamental crops, medicinal and aromatic plants, spices and plantation crops, providea new hope for economic security and further growth.
The Conference is designed to provide a common forum forall stake holders to share their experience and expertise to suggestthe technology-institution-policy package for sustainable produc-tion and marketing of horticultural products. This would augmentemployment-income generation to ensure livelihood security of thesubsistence farmers without further depleting the natural resourcebase. Production and consumption of horticultural products couldplay a key role in providing the much needed nutrition and healthsecurity to about 815 million people suffering from hunger andmalnutrition in the developing world.
The objective of the Conference is to identify key factorsinfluencing the sustainability of horticulture sector in developing
