HORSES, HOUNDS & HEROES | WELCOME

WELCOME

Jeanette Allen Chief Executive

The Horse Trust is the world’s oldest horse charity, based in the heart of the Chilterns Hills, specialising

in providing respite and retirement for working horses and ponies and a place of sanctuary for horses, ponies and donkeys who have suffered cruelty or neglect.

I would like to thank all of our dedicated supporters for their ongoing support throughout these times of uncertainty and as a relatively small Equine charity, fundraising events like this are hugely important to us. If you would like to support our work and help us in our fundraising efforts to provide our horses with the five star level of care they deserve, please consider donating to our emergency appeal online at www.horsetrust.org.uk or by texting HORSETRUST to 70450 to donate £10 to our horses today.

As you can see our show looks a little different this year. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, we have had to close our site to visitors for the foreseeable future and cancel many events including Horses, Hounds and Heroes. However, the team was not to be deterred and the show must go on…..line!

We still have a wonderful day planned full of four-legged fun, and an itinerary is available on pages 3 and 4 of this programme, and please make sure you check these out so you do not miss out on any of the winners announcements which will be ongoing throughout the day.

On behalf of everyone here at The Horse Trust, thank you for your ongoing and generous support throughout these trying times, and I look forward to welcoming you back to The Horse Trust as soon as possible.

HORSES, HOUNDS & HEROES | OUR HISTORY

8www.horsetrust.org.uk

OUR HISTORY

Inspired by the novel Black Beauty, Miss Ann Lindo created the Home of Rest for Horses in 1886 to provide a place of respite

for overworked and exhausted working horses in London.

Just 3 years after founding, the Home of Rest was established in Acton, and enjoyed 20 years there before moving to Westcroft Farm in Cricklewood, just 4 miles from central London. Since most of the horses worked in the City, a central location was essential. Twenty loose boxes and isolation units were built, thanks to generous donations from private patrons.

In 1934 a compulsory purchase order forced a move from Cricklewood. The transfer to the new site in Borehamwood was a landmark in the history of the Home. The removal was accomplished on the 20th October, 1934 and all the animals were transferred by motor horse van.

In the 1970’s, we had to move due to the ever-growing building development demands within London. The proceeds from the sale of the Borehamwood site were used to purchase Speen Farm in Buckinghamshire, a farm with over 200 acres of

land on the southern slopes of the Chiltern Hills.

In 2006 the Home of Rest for Horses was renamed The Horse Trust, in order to better reflect the breadth and depth of our activities to promote and enhance the welfare of the horse.

In the early days, the majority of our residents were London cab horses. By the 1920’s, many of their roles had been taken over by motor vehicles and most of our residents were cobs and ponies belonging to London tradesmen.

The Home of Rest provided retirement to our first Army horse following The Great War. Offering a well-earned rest to these loyal public servants is a proud tradition continued to this day. The Horse Trust continues to maintain partnerships with The King’s Troop and the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment. Both of these ceremonial units within the British Army are actively involved in the ceremonial season and can mostly be seen in London on State Occasions.

The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery

Stationed at Woolwich, they form Her Majesty The Queen’s ceremonial Saluting Battery and are a mounted unit. Their soldiers are superb equestrians trained to drive a team of six horses that pull the First World War ‘thirteen pounder’ state saluting guns. As an integral part of the Household Troops their duties include the firing of Royal Salutes in Hyde Park and Green Park on Royal Anniversaries and State Occasions, providing a gun carriage and team of black horses for State and Military funerals and performing the world famous musical drive around the country.

The Horse Trust is the world’s oldest horse charity, now based in the heart of the Chilterns Hills,

specialising in providing respite and retirement for working horses and ponies and a place of sanctuary for

horses, ponies and donkeys who have suffered from cruelty or neglect.

HORSES, HOUNDS & HEROES | OUR HISTORY

9www.horsetrust.org.uk

Around the time that we moved to Speen, we started to work in closer partnership with the Metropolitan Police Mounted Branch, retiring the first of many police horses to the Home of Rest. Police horses retire here having worked incredibly hard throughout their careers, often in terrifying situations.

Today, public service is a defining criterion for horses retiring to our Home of Rest. Public service includes police horses, military

horses and those who have worked with charities such as the Riding for the Disabled Association and the Horse Rangers, to improve the lives of disabled or disadvantaged children. As far back as the 1930’s, our reputation brought requests to take in mistreated horses. Today, The Horse Trust provides sanctuary to horses, ponies and donkeys who have suffered from cruelty or neglect and who are in desperate need of specialist treatment and care.

The Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment

The Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment provides the Army’s mounted State Ceremonial & Public Duties capability – the public face of the British Army to the world and the mounted escort to Her Majesty The Queen. It is made up of the two most senior regiments of the British Army, the Life Guards and the Blues and Royals (Royal Horse Guards and 1st Dragoons). These regiments are divided between the Armoured Regiment and the Mounted Regiment. The Household Cavalry is part of the Household Division and is the official bodyguard to The Queen. The Household Cavalry Band is the only mounted band in the British Army and is part of the Corps of Army Music.

HORSES, HOUNDS & HEROES | OUR HISTORY

The Royal Mews

The Royal Mews is where the British Royal Family’s grandest forms of road transport are stored. This includes their fleet

of Rolls Royce’s, their carriages, and the Royal Mews horses that pull them. The horses enjoy luxurious stables adorned with tiled walls and gleaming horse brasses. Pride of place goes to the Gold State Coach, built in 1761 and decorated with riotous assortment of gold leaf, painted panels, and numerous sculptures of cherubs, lion’s heads and dolphins. The coach stands at 3.6m (12ft) high, 7m (23ft) long and weighs 4 tons (9,960lbs). With all of this in mind, it is clear to see why 8 horses are required to pull it.

As such, the carriage is only used for major occasions such as jubilees and coronations.

Royal Mews horses play a vital role in ceremonial life of the British Royal Family and the culture of the nation. Horses within the Royal Mews can be categorised into two groups The Windsor Greys and The Cleveland Bays. Windsor Grey’s such as our very own Daniel, famously HM The Queen’s favourite horse, have been drawing he carriages of successive monarchs and members of the Royal Family since Queen Victoria’s reign. While the Cleveland Bays are used for day-to-day activities and as work horses and to pick up high commissioners and ambassadors presenting their credentials to The Queen.

OUR HISTORY

Riding for the Disabled Association

The Riding for the Disabled Associaion (RDA) was founded in 1969 and works to enrich lives through horses. The horses benefit the lives of over 25,000 disabled children and adults. Therapy and fun activities like riding and carriage driving, fitness, skills development and opportunities for achievement - all supported by 18,000 amazing volunteers and qualified coaches at nearly 500 RDA centres all over the UK. The Horse Trust and the RDA both share a Patron, HRH The Princes Royal and are honoured to retire these hard working equines who do so much o enhance the lives of disabled childeren across the UK.

Metropolitan Police Mounted Branch

From its humble beginnings in 1760 the Mounted Branch has adapted well to the changing needs of the society it serves, and it continues to play a key role in modern day policing. The main responsibilities of the branch are to conduct safe policing of football matches and crowd control at other large public order events. They also escort the Royal Guard change every morning. Crowd control is the primary object of the deployment of the police horses, both for orderly and disorderly gatherings of assembled crowds.

HORSES, HOUNDS & HEROES | NEW ARRIVALS

The life and experiences of the working horse in the 19th and 20th centuries seem to be a world away from the lives

of the modern day horse. Yet, horses continue to work accross the country and play a significent role in the safety and security in towns and cities. Although the London horse drawn cab may be a thing of the past, the working horse is not. The Horse Trust is honoured to provide retirement and rest to horses from several institutions including the British Army, Mounted Police Sections and Riding for the Disabled. These brave horses have dedicated their lives to these institutions, be it for our safety and security, or therapy for those of us in need; their causes are noble and so deserve a long and happy retirement here in the green fields at The Horse Trust.

Today we have three horses that will be officially retiring to us during our Parade of Horses starting at 16.30.

Since Horses, Hounds and Heroes 2019 our herd has continued to grow and now stands at 149. We have been honoured to welcome many new characters from across the country from our partners including: Thames Valley Police, Police Scotland, Lancashire Constabulary, Greater Manchester Police, Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment, the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery, Horse Rangers Association, the Royal Mews and Riding for the Disabled Association. You will meet some of our heroes via our virtual event today. To introduce you to our many new faces, here is a list and fact files of our new residents.

RHA

As he is black with no white markings, he was usually the Left Section Commander horse (these are the horses that would be available for a State Funeral). You would often see William out on duty with his partner in crime as Falstaff.

This gentle giant joined the team at Lancashire Police in December 2007 as a 7-year-old, making him their longest serving horse to date. Darwen was said to be a superb horse that participated in all policing duties to a high standard. He was dependable and always recognised as the officer’s ‘go to horse’ in many situations.

Bud began his police service in July 2005 with West Yorkshire Police before being donated to the Met police mounted branch. In April 2013 Bud made the news when he was punched by a football fan in the face. Luckily Bud was unharmed and returned to his duties shortly after.

Also Known as ‘Dave’ after the famous Charles Dickens character, David Copperfield. Even though Copperfield is the spritley age of 10 he suffers from early onset neck arthritis which means he can no longer continue ridden work.

Orcadia carried out all his policing duties to the highest standard. Due to his bravery he particualrly excelled in football crowd control and public order duties. Orcadia is a true gentleman and was often paired with younger, less experienced horses to show them the ropes.

WELCOME ELIZABETH HORSES, HOUNDS & HEROES | WELCOME ELIZABETH

The 16.2hh beauty who was famously named after HM Queen Elizabeth II, served for several of her

sixteen-year career as HRH Princess Royal’s Charger and would be ridden on special occasions such as HM The Queen’s birthday parades.

Other than her impressive role of being the noble stead for HRH Princess Royal, Elizabeth has had a fabulous career. She has taken part in State and Ceremonial duties such as The Royal Wedding in 2011, The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Parade, Major General’s Inspection and State openings of Parliament.

Elizabeth was said to be an extremely kind and gentle horse to ride, therefore spennding many years in the training wing, where she taught new soldiers to ride, some of whom may have never touched a horse before. However, due to her good looks, Elizabeth could also be found regularly on guard in the boxes at Horse Guards where she thoroughly enjoyed being admired by the public.

Horse Trust, Elizabeth has already proven to be very popular with the team and has made lots of new friends out in the field including Captain Greatgun, affectionately known as Gozza who served in the King Troop. Elizabeth has also loved her time coming into the stables to meet the public. Like her ‘guard days’ she absolutely loves the attention and being around people! Elizabeth even recently featured in a video put together called ‘The Horse Trust Hall of Fame’ in honour of Virtual Royal Windsor Horse Show, an event we love and support every year.

We are very proud and honoured to have Elizabeth with us at The Horse Trust for her retirement. It is very special to have the connection of Elizabeth being a previous ride of HRH Princess Royal, our devoted charity patron.

We wish Elizabeth many more happy years of being spoilt and pampered by us after such a commendable and grand working life.

Elizabeth is a striking black mare who arrived at The Horse Trust in December 2019 after retiring from the Household Cavalry after an impressive sixteen year’s service.

HORSES, HOUNDS & HEROES | GONE BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN

20www.horsetrust.org.uk

GONE BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN At The Horse Trust, we have the honour of specialising in giving a dignified retirement to working horses to give them the best possible life in their twilight years after a career of giving service.

ANNABELLE

Annabelle arrived at The Horse Trust in May 2015 after

serving the people of London with the Metropolitan

Police Mounted Section for 18 years. The highlight of

Annabelle’s career was being part of the Grey Escort,

leading The Royal Wedding in 2011. It wasn’t all plain

sailing, due to her career in London Annabelle had

never experienced being let loose in wide open spaces

or being in a field with lots of other horses. Annabelle’s

agoraphobia was severe and meant that her future

in retirement was unclear. We wanted to give her the

best chance possible and eventually after months of

behavioural development Annabelle was able to join

a herd where she flourished. Annabelle was a beautiful

mare with a beautiful heart who we miss dearly.

MERLIN

The handsome Merlin came to us in 2018 after an impressive 15 years service in The Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment. During his long and distinguished career, he has took part in numerous high profile parades. Standing an impressive 17.2hh, he was described as the ‘ultimate gentle giant’ with the biggest of hearts and in true grey horse style, he spent a lot of time wallowing in the muddiest patch of the field! Merlin retired to us when he sustained an injury in his left stifle. Sadly, this was the sort of injury that would continue to degenerate making the chances of it healing very slim. For this reason, we decided that as heart-breaking as it was, the kindest decision was to let him go. Merlin you have made such an impact on all of us here at The Horse Trust and the saddest part is we were only able to have you with us for a short while but in that little time we’ve made memories that will

last a lifetime.

JACK PRIDAY The handsome Jack Priday arrived here at The Horse Trust in 2011 after serving 11 years in the Greater Manchester Police Mounted Branch (GMP). Jack Priday was a striking pure Irish Draught flea bitten grey gelding with the most amazing presence whilst on and off duty. During his career he was involved in numerous public order duties and daily patrols in and around Manchester. He also played a vital role in major events such as the Oldham riots in 2001, the Manchester riots in 2011and even participated in ‘All the Queen’s Horses’ celebration which took part in Windsor back in 2002. In 2014 we saw the arrival of newbie Reginald and as soon as the two met they were marked as inseparable and the best of friends. Wherever you would find Jack Priday you would find Reginald and so the pair was nickname ‘The Blues Brothers’. We loved watching their friendship grow and it offers us so much comfort to know that these two found happiness in each other. We are proud to say that Jack Priday was a part of The Horse Trust family for 8 years and he is dearly missed by all.

HORSES, HOUNDS & HEROES | GONE BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN

21www.horsetrust.org.uk

GUCCI

Gorgeous Gucci arrived here at The Horse Trust in 2019 after serving in the Windsor Horse Rangers. This plucky little lady spent a number of years teaching lots of children to ride. Gucci retired to us at the age of 14 due to suffering ongoing arthritis which meant she was no longer suitable for ridden work. Although Gucci was only with us for a short time, we take great comfort in knowing she had a relaxing and content retirement. It has been a pleasure to have you with us Gucci, we’re just saddened that it couldn’t have been longer.

PANDORA

Pandora, affectionately known as Dora, arrived at The Horse Trust in September 2012. Dora was one of our well-known welfare admissions with a traumatic story to tell. Poor Dora was found starving, abandoned and in a terrible condition. To add to the distress, it was also clear that she had recently given birth, but sadly the foal was nowhere to be found. It fills our hearts with joy to know that whatever her past, she spent her last 8 years a very happy girl who was adored by us all, we will never forget her.

ZETLAND

Zetland arrived here at The Horse Trust back in December 2012, after serving 14 years with the Household Cavalry. He arrived with five other military retirees on the same day, a group that came straight to retirement after that year’s Military Tattoo at Earls Court. This meant that on arrival, Zetland was sparkling white. This, of course, didn’t last more than a few minutes. In typical grey fashion, Zetland spent at least half of his amazing seven years with us finding mud to roll in! It has been our absolute pleasure having Zetland retire with us for the last 7 years. They are years we will always cherish making fond memories that we will never forget. Zetland was so special in so many ways and The Horse Trust is just not the same without him. He will always remain in our hearts, he was a true one off.

CLYDEAlmost 9 years ago, in December 2011, we had the great pleasure of welcoming Clyde to The Horse Trust. After an impressive 17 years serving as a police horse in the Thames Valley Mounted Section (TVP), Clyde made his final journey to retirement at 21. In his working career, Clyde was an outstanding horse who carried out all policing duties to the highest of standards. Officers described him as “one of the bravest police horses Thames Valley Police has even known”. His remarkable and courageous attitude did not go unnoticed as in June 2011, just before he retired, Clyde received a Chief Constable’s Commendation. The award was presented to him at Royal Ascot by Her Majesty The Queen and the Chief Constable of TVP, where he had worked most of his 17 years as the Sergeant’s lead horse. Clyde loved his retirement and liked nothing more than frolicking around the field with old friends. The heart-breaking decision was recently made for Clyde’s well-being that it was time to say our final goodbyes. We knew with the illness he had, Clyde would soon worsen again and that is not what we wanted for him. Your duty is done buddy, now journey well and rest easy in paradise.

CUMBRIA

We have had the absolute pleasure of having Cumbria with us for nearly 9 years, after she retired from the Metropolitan Police Mounted Branch (MET) in December 2011. After a wonderful 12 years’ service, Cumbria made her way from her former home in London to the Chiltern Hills at the age of 16. On arrival at The Horse Trust we were blown away by such a beauty who came trotting down the ramp with such elegance and grace! Straight away we could completely understand why she was so popular and loved at the MET, as she pretty much stole our hearts instantly. Cumbria has suffered from multiple lameness issues in her back legs for several years. Although we kept Cumbria as comfortable and happy as possible on pain killers unfortunately, the hard ground that came with spring increased her discomfort. Sadly, we had come to a point where we could no longer keep Cumbria pain free despite our very best efforts. The hard decision was made that it was time to say our final goodbyes.
