    Iseemyfaceinthoseeyes.

    Theyreflectmebacktomyself

    likeafunhousemirror.

    Myfaceislongandskinny,

    myeyesdeeppoints,

    mymouthshort,

    lipsfat,

    andImsmiling.

    Thehorseisnotmad.

    Theappletreestoodnexttothestonewall

    thatenclosedthefieldofthirtyacres

    whereroamedandgrazedthirtyhorses

    whodozedunderthetreeasashield

    againstthehighsummersunsomuch

    theyworeawaythegrassandcreateddust

    inwhichtheyrolledtoscratchtheirbacks.

    FromtheirbacksIcountedthemiles

    byaddingthenumberoftimes

    Ipassedthetree

    onthequarter-miletrackaroundthefield.

    Iwondernowifthetreeisstillthere,

    thesunburningitsleavessilverinsummer

    anditsapplesredinthefall.
