Piwakawaka (Yrs 0-2) Miss Raybould

Hi, in preparation for ski day could you please provide the following information so the process of handing out ski gear to those hiring, is quicker and smoother. We need to know your child’s height, weight and shoe size. Please email this information to [email protected]. It would be helpful to have this information by Tuesday 23rd August. At present we are talking and writing about the Olympics during our writing time. We have learned lots about aspects of the Games such as, the flame, the medal ceremony, the flags, countries and the different sports. We are presently focusing on number in maths and in week 6 and 7 we will swap to Measurement. I will be away during week 6 and 7 as I am visiting my Grandma in England. I am intending to spend a week with her to celebrate her 100th birthday on September 2nd. Mrs Cookson will be Piwakawaka’s teacher. Regards Julia

Kea (Yrs 2-4) Miss Stewart

Hello all, Phew!!! It has been a hectic first few weeks back. I’m not sure where all the time has gone. We have been busy with learning and making things. The Olympics has been a highlight of the day. Talking about New Zealand and Filipino athletes competing at the games. We have also learnt a little about the ancient Olympics too. Winter Tournament went well las week. Thank you to the helpers and the parents who came along to support the teams. All the children played well and had some fun too. Ski day is in a few weeks and we need your help!! Can you please write in a notebook or e-mail to the office your child’s weight, height and shoe size if they are hiring skis and boots from Porters. They like to know well in advance what to get ready for us.

Megan

Tui (Yrs 4-6) Mrs Foster

Hi everyone, last week we all went to winter tournament in Darfield, I was with the netballers. We had a fantastic time and best of all the children were awesome. The senior team played with great enthusiasm and won all but one game in their grade. They went on to play against a Darfield team in the play offs for 3rd & 4th and unfortunately went down 5 – 3. It was a great game and I loved how the boys brought their skills from rugby into netball. The juniors were amazing and won every game. I loved how they supported each other and just had fun. Could everyone have a hunt around home for school journals and library books please as we are short of a few, thank you.

Our Active Culture…

Malvern Winter Tournament…. Hororata students competed at the Malvern Winter Tournament, held at Darfield in early August 2016. Following the success of 2015, this year’s tournament offered our Year 3-6 students netball, football, hockey, SportStart and rugby offered as part of the Malvern Carnival of Rugby

This year Hororata entered five teams across the three sports, including joining with Greendale and Windwhistle schools to form a barbarian hockey team. Once again the Hororata teams competed exceptionally well achieving the following success: Netball - Junior (1st), Seniors (4th); Hockey (3rd). Congratulations to the following students who were selected for their respective Malvern teams to compete at the Canterbury Winter Tournament later this month: Ben Smith (Hockey); Will Cookson (Rugby) and Samuel Hadfield (Football).

I would also like to acknowledge the support Nicola Brown, Nikki Morgan and Abbi Gameson who assisted on days as team managers. Without your support on the day, we simply couldn’t have achieved the success we did.

Our Learning Culture… Parents Teacher Conferences… Parent-Teacher Conferences were held during the week of Monday 8 August 2016. The conferences designed to complement the mid-year reports attracted some 38 (75%) of total school families, covering some 59 (79%) of the student body i.e., Piwakawaka 17 (85%); Kea 20 (80%); Tui 22 (76%). These figures are disappointing, given the earlier than normal lead-in time, the flexibility of the appointment schedule and pending changes to classroom compositions. Initial feedback was that the time frame after reports and the holidays was too long, with a preference for conferences straight after reports. Some more positive feedback included comments on the fact that the parent had regular on-going contact with the teacher and that the information included in the school reports was sufficient.

Just a reminder to those people who missed out on this occasion… our school operates an ‘Open Door’ policy and welcomes parents in for a chat at any time. If you would like to catch up with your child’s teacher, drop them a line and make a date at a convenient time.

Finally, in recent weeks I have been concerned about student behaviour on the school buses i.e., showing no respect for the drivers, moving around the bus whilst in motion and excessive noise. As explained to our children, this kind of behaviour is extremely dangerous, as any distraction to the driver can have catastrophic results.

I have talked with students on several occasions about this matter and have made school bus safety a priority at our weekly assembly. Unfortunately, some students continue to put others at risk by their actions and behaviour, and have no regard for the safety of others.

As principal I hold strong my responsibility to keep children physically and emotionally safe at school and whilst traveling to and from school on the school bus. Our school has firm rules for behaviour on the bus and strong consequences for any inappropriate behaviour. To this end I have removed a child from one our afternoon bus runs and am closely monitoring the behaviour of several other students on our Downs Road and Karanga routes.

The difficulty I face is that I cannot be on every bus every day, and need to trust that our children will be responsible on the school bus. I understand that the trip home comes at the end of the day and that many children treat the bus trip home as a play break. As a result they get noisy; they move around and they put themselves and others at risk… this kind of behaviour would be unacceptable in your vehicles and is amplified by multiple passengers in unrestrained seats.

The school bus service is a privilege not a right and student, families and the school need to work together to ensure that the service is operated safely. I would appreciate your support on this matter to remind your children about safe behaviour in a vehicle, emphasizing the consequences for your child. you and your family if your child was removed from the school bus each day.

Thanks for supporting our school
