Hi everyone It has been an eventful and busy past few weeks! Pet Day was a fabulous day and it was great to catch up with so many of you. We were very lucky as it was great weather for the event. Piwi have been enjoying working with different teachers as part of our Integrated topic in the afternoons. Ask your child what they have learned regarding relaxing and sleep: keeping active and next week they will be discovering and sharing ideas on a balanced diet, closely exploring fruits and vegetables. An interesting question to ask them for next week would be, what is the difference between a fruit and a vegetable. Over the next couple of weeks I would like to meet with the parents of children who have started school this term. I will write a note in your child's reading notebook to arrange a time for us to get together and discuss how they are settling in at school. I look forward to seeing you. Regards Julia

Kakapo (Yrs 1-2) Ms Cullen Kia ora koutou katoa I hope everyone is doing ok after our very active Sunday night. It has been a very busy and exciting last couple of weeks and I am happy to see a normal couples of weeks. The kids seem to be enjoying the new addition of Kakapo to our room and I love the stories I am getting back, don't forget you can email me the photos or the kids can draw pictures.

We have started new spelling homework, which I am really hoping you have all had a look at, this will give the kids the chance to do different activities to help them memorize their words also if you ask them to write the words in sentences should also help cement their learning.

I have begun to introduce STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, ART and Maths) into our afternoon classroom programme. The programme will give the kids an opportunity to do hands-on projects which will develop their experimental and innovative minds. So if you have any CD's that you don't want anymore and pump bottle tops I would love to have them and some toilet roll inner would be great for our Christmas activities. Remember my door is always open. Amanda

Kea (Yrs 2-4) Miss Stewart

Hello all, This week there are so many people to thank for all the hard they do for our school. We appreciate everything you do for the school and for the children. Thanks to all the parents who helped out a the Highland Games giving up their time to cook bacon sandwiches. Thanks to Mr G who organises and runs the increasingly popular Junior Warriors and Have-a-Go every year. Thank you to all those who captured and brought down precious pets to the pet day or bought a cake at an inflated price. The pool is open! Thanks so much to those who took the time to come down and do all the work to get it ready for us. Don’t forget to start packing swimming togs. Hopefully the weather will start to co-operate. Megan

Tui (Yrs 4-6) Mrs Foster

Hi Everyone. Wasn’t the Spring Festival great, I so enjoyed seeing all the children with their animals. Tui children worked really hard on their Pet Projects and the results were amazing, they did a spectacular job of them. In class the children have been working hard revising some of the maths strategies that they have been taught during the year. It is really great seeing how far they have come over the year. Please keep up the reading and spelling practise at home. Well there are reports to write, call in if you have any questions. Jenni

we walk on the crust of an unfinished earth’

Our Active Culture…

Hororata Highland Games… On Saturday 5 November 2016, the Hororata Highland Games were held at the Hororata Domain. Once again our school ran the Junior Warrior Competition; an opportunity for children to compete alongside the “big boys” in our Scottish heavy events: Toss the Caber, Stone Put, Farmers Walk.

This year marked our sixth year of being involved with what has now become one of the largest highland games in New Zealand. From our first year running a Scottish Pentathlon to what has now evolved into Deep South Junior Warriors Inter-School Competition and have-a-go event with over 200 participants.

This year Hororata entered three teams in the Junior Warriors competition which included 17 teams from across Malvern (including five High School teams). I am proud to report that our teams achieved awesome success with the Hororata Highlanders (Will Cookson, Charlie Blackburn, Seth Hopkins and Shimee Araguas) taking out third place and the Hororata Hurricanes (Tom Chaffey, Joe Cookson, Simon Henriksen, Grace Flett) taking out fourth place Another notable mention is that the winning team from Darfield High School the ‘Slippery Snakes’ was made up of some of the members of our winning 2015 Hororata teams (Tom Freeman, Hamish Thornley, Oliver Blackburn).

Our Learning Culture…

Hororata Pet Show… The Hororata School Pet Show was held on Friday 4 November 2016. The show was part of ‘Spring Festival’ which included our annual ‘Grands’ Day’; a fantastic Paralympic Theme as part of ‘Good Life’ collaborative topic; an healthy lunch courtesy of our PTA; a very success Cake Competition and auction, and of course our famous ‘Pet Show’. The day attracted a large number of grandparents and grand friends to the school, all enjoying the commotion that saw our school transform from a school yard to an Olympic arena and farm yard.

The following students achieved notable success in the school pet show: Early Lamb (Born on or before 1/09/16): Emily Breading (1st), Holly Smith (2nd), Jessie Smith, Ben Smith (3rd=); Preschoolers: Quentin Rowlands (1st); Late Lamb (Born after 1/09/16): Esther Bruce (1st), Jennifer Fickling (2nd), Blake Booth, Kiana Buechele (3rd=); Preschoolers: Matthew Tuer (1st) Jono Irving (2nd); Champion lamb: Esther Bruce; Reserve Champion: Jennifer Fickling. Canine: Carter Moore-Woodward (1st), Will Cookson, Seth Hopkins (2nd=) Livi Williamson (HC). Feline: Bree Lough (1st), Emily Wilding, Niamh Wilding (2nd=), Seth Wright (HC). Avian: Sam Smith (1st), Lucy Flett (2nd), Gracie Symons (3rd), T.K. & Zander Freitas (HC); Preschoolers: Eddy Parker (1st). Misc: Lilly & Luke Oliver-Albon - Fish, Poppy Freeman - Pig, Joe Cookson – Ewe & Lamb (1st=). Lamb Drinking: Esther Bruce (1st), Blake Booth (2nd). Best Cake In Show: Esther Bruce (1st), Breading Family – Pigs in Mud (2nd), Loos Family – Sheep (3rd), Oliver-Albon / Smith Families (4th=). Cake Auction raised - $ 1,800.00 for our swimming pool and for the SPCA.

Thank you to our judges to helped out on the day i.e., Andy Millar, Paul Dixey, Stuart Oliver, Dave Sligh, Susan Thornley, Jenny Gallagher, Lotte Asmussen.

Finally, as has become tradition in Canterbury, every year we are challenged by Mother Nature and be it flooding, snow or Earthquakes have to make the difficult decision whether to remain open or closed. We have learned through experience that the internet and cell phone coverage is unreliable in these circumstances and have found that the most reliable form of getting the message out there is via our school answer phone. In the event of adverse weather or a natural disaster families are encouraged to ring the school and listen to the answerphone message. The message is generally updated between 6.30 – 7.00am/pm daily and should advise you of the schools status. In the event of an emergency please ring the Principal at ph. 027 229 1163

Alternatively, you could go to our new mobile telephone app, Parent Teacher Calendar (PTC) for the Instant Notification feature as part of the Calendar function.

The PTC App can be downloaded onto your phone quickly at http://www.parentteachercalendar.co.nz/

Thanks for supporting our school
