Bethan Thomas is, according toheadteacher Ms Jones, the embodiment ofthe school’s vision.

But it isn’t Bethan’s academicachievements, nor her winning her muchwanted place at Swansea, which means MsJones’ holds her in such high esteem.

“Bethan is a tribute to the school’s vision,in the sense she really brings the visionalive and is trying change the world,” saidthe head.

Indeed, it was applying to Swansea earlierthis year which spurred Bethan on to makea difference.

Adopted at the age of eight by “the mostamazing mother”, Bethan was none theless surprised to find she wasn’t entitled toa care leavers’ grant, unlike someone whois fostered.

“I found that quite unfair,” she said. “Somestudents like myself have gone throughquite a lot in the past, even though we nowhave a stable family. But does that mean allthat happened before has been forgotten? The fact is, they are almost neglecting ourneglect.”

Bethan - who has had to work hard to make

up for dropping behind her peers as ayoung child but still achieved B, D, D in herA-levels - set about trying to change that.

She sat on a special panel of adoptedchildren, helping a House of Lordscommittee to research into the adoptionprocess. Through her work on this panel, she was able to secure work experiencewith the chairperson Baroness Butler-Sloss.

“I want more rights for adopted andfostered children - but it needs to be equalfor all of us. We just want to be normal.”

This campaigning role is something shehopes to carry on into her later career. Infact, it is why she chose to study media andcommunications.

“I want to go into TV presenting,” Bethansaid. “I like talking and inspiring people. And once I have built up a public image, Iwant to start an organisation - notconnected to the council - for fostered andadopted people, so if they want help theycan come straight to the organisation. Iwant to help more people like me.”

We all look forward to hearing more fromBethan as she embarks on her universityjourney.

Private Fostering Arrangements

Clare Borrill, our new Deputy Headteacher who is leading onInclusion/Barriers to Learning informs of the following:

At Hornsey School for Girls, we recognise the importance of working withfamilies and carers to support their children; ensuring that all students have access to highquality support and intervention when necessary.

In order to ensure that our records are up to date, parents and carers should inform theschool when a private fostering arrangement is in place:

‘Private fostering is when a child under the age of 16 (or 18 if disabled) is cared forby someone who is not their parent or a close relative. This is a private arrangement madebetween a parent and a carer, for 28 days or more. Close relatives are defined as step-parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, uncles or aunts (whether of full blood, half blood ormarriage/affinity).’

It is also a legal requirement that you contact Haringey Screening Team on:
