More About

Antitrust LawAntitrust LawAntitrust Law

On 14/12/2011, the FTPG (Fair Trade Promotion Group) led by Mr. Nick Naruaki Ohnishi and

joined by his team member/Mr. Hisafune Takashima and NGSA RPO (Regional Promotion Of-

fice)/Mr. Lim Chin Boon, made a visit to Thailand.

The purpose of the visit was to promote and arrange the basic training of Antitrust Law to

NYK Group Companies in Thailand covering FTPG & its organization, General Risk of Anti-

trust Law, Governance Reporting Line, so on and so forth.

Antitrust law in snapshot:

Its key principle is to promote fair trades and free competition; prevent unlawful restraints

and monopoly.

The scope of the law is very pervasive with virtually to every industry and business sector,

all fall within its reach, no matter selling locally or globally.

The law is now implemented by more than 110 countries with huge fines and heavy penalties

for any offence, irrespective of such a misconduct being made intentionally or unintentional-

ly.

The consequences and repercussions of violation would not only specifically affect to the

unorthodox individual or company that make a breach but also implicate all associated parties

and companies that possibly involve.

Great care and awareness must therefore be taken to

avoid risks and activities possibly violating the law.

Cultivating understanding and developing law-abiding

spirit is of importance and must be supported by all.

I also enjoyed the visit to some interesting places/

landmarks like:

New York: Time Square, Central Park

Atlanta: CNN HQ, Coca-Cola HQ and Georgia

Aquarium

Los Angeles: Universal Studio

San Francisco: Fisherman's Wharf, Union Square

Park, Lombard Street, Golden Gate Bridge and

Oakland Port

All places are fabulous. American life style is very interesting and the hospitality of NYK NA people to me is amazing. I

am very grateful to BOD's to grant the support for my business trip. The worthiness and benefits of this trip would be

surely back to the company ultimately.

During 2 weeks trip, I did 3 presentations at 3 main offices i.e., Secaucus, Atlanta and Los Angeles. I made 12 sales

calls and met about 50 co-workers and 23 customers.

@ Time Square, New York

@ Fisherman’s Wharf, San Francisco

@ Union Square, San Francisco

My over 40,000 Km journey started Nov 12.

I woke up early at 04:30 am for 07:10 am

flight ex. Suvarnabhumi for Newark, NJ via

Tokyo. It was a trip of about 22 hours

including 3-hour waiting for connecting

flight at Narita. I arrived at the destination

at 16:25 pm on the same day, crossing 12

hours time zone as US East Coast is 12

hours behind ours.

My itinerary started out at Secaucus, NJ;

then to Greensboro, NC; Nashville, TN;

Atlanta, GA; Los Angeles, CA and lasted at

San Francisco, CA. Lady Luck (or, I always

have luck with lady, jokingly say) was with

me for the entire journey. Not only that

every flight was seamlessly connected on

time but it is also problem-free (knocking

on wood). Here, some of the exciting events

en route:

Sunday the 13th, the lucky number, I went to Central Park in New York, where there had been a mob of Occupy Wall

Street (I didn't see or go to see the rally). However, next morning Nov 14, police ended the 2 months long occupation,

evacuated the protesters and cleaned the areas. It was as if by coincidence police set the day of my visit to empty the

streets.

After finishing sales calls at Greensboro, while heading for the dinner, there was a heavy rain with lightning and thun-

ders, I and my colleagues heard the tornado warning. However, finally, we went back to the hotel safely. I was told on

the next day that the tornado was just about 30 - 40 miles away from me. The tornado had widely damages some parts

of Kentucky and North Carolina States.

On the way from Atlanta to Los Angeles (where the time difference is about minus 15 hrs. against Thailand's), the flight

took about 4 and a half hours. I arrived Los Angeles air port 06:00 pm on Nov 19. On the next day 20/11, heavy rain

poured the whole day - morning till evening. There were flood, few roads blockage, and the traffic near the air port was

at a snail's pace. Nature spared mercifully on me, I was just a day away from the trouble.

Following several sympathetic schemes granted and motioned

earlier by the company to help relieve the staff impacted by

the floods late last year, power of friends spirit comes to

life again. And, for this time, it comes forth with a variety of

activities through auction, donation and offering NYK Polo

Shirts at special price to the newcomers. Numerous NYK

fellows join hearts to energize this, echoing -- at NYK, we

work like family.

To this end, twice occasions of auction were held with an

assortment of stuff gratuitously provided for the bidding by

the company and by the top management i.e., Golf Putter,

Whiskey, Flowers, Dolls, Cookies, Vacuum Bottles, Blankets,

etc. The first auction took place on the last Friday of last

year during end-year Karaoke Party; and the second, on the

first Friday of this year during New Year Party.

As for NYK Polo Shirts, the company provided free for new joining staff to acquire it economically; however, it is

gratifying to say that many of them possessed the NYK's clothes with additional contribution. Likewise, donation came

along with the above affairs at one's own volition. All in all, we could get Baht 37,475 from the activities.

At NYK, power of friends spirit has not only been prevailed for the assistance to one another individually or on

non-business matters at dire time; but more importantly, this spirit is in fact has been culturally established in NYK

organization for long and rooted in NYK Group Values, 'Integrity'. Together with the other 2 Values say, 'Innovation'

and 'Intensity'; all these 3 Is have inspired us to strive and thrive NYK forward steadily.

Back to the contribution, this would be a supplement to various extra-ordinary and generous schemes bestowed by

the company to nearly half a hundred of affected staff initially.

The NGSA 6th Regional NYK Week was held in Singapore during 30th November to 2nd December, 2011. The

theme for this time is "Working Cross-Culturally Across the NYK Family with Global Colleagues and Customers”.

There were 20 participants from NYK group companies in South Asia attended in this event, including 2 Thais.

One is Khun Sudarat from Yusen Logistics Thailand and the other is writer from NYK Line Thailand.

Highlight of NGSA 6th Regional NYK Week:

Presentation by NYK Shipmanagement, NYK RORO Asia, NYK Bulkship and Yusen Logistics (Singapore)

Port tour to visit NYK RORO vessel at Pasir Pajang Terminal

Training by external consultant about cultural dimensions i.e., 1) Task & Relationship, 2) Power Distance

Indicator (PDI), 3) Uncertainty of Avoidance (UA) and 4) Collectivism and Individualism, as the global

skills tools to learn about multi-cultural/multi-national corporations

Group workshop and presentation

It was a valuable time for me in attending this regional week. Besides knowing more about NYK Group related

business and having a chance to exchange ideas and experiences with other participants, I have better insights

into multi-cultures in NYK group, understand more on their ways of thinking which could be applicable to both

for those in NYK organization and those outsiders such as customers and learn how to make self-prepare to

communicate and interact effectively with them under respective circumstances etc.
