Joining Forces

• Activities will provide a framework of European national/regional structures

join forces to develop and implement approaches and strategies for the

management of crop, forest and animal GenRes

• ECPGR, EUFORGEN and ERFP will for the first time join forces with

representative stakeholders and end-users outside from the networks, to

develop a European Integrated Strategy for the Conservation and Use of crop,

forest and AnGR

• GenRes Bridge consortium encompasses partners from the fields of GenRes

management and have multidisciplinary interest and expertise to contribute to

various work packages

Background (1)

• Sustainable management of GenRes is essential for the future use, the nature

and human well-being

• include - in situ, ex situ conservation and use of GenRes

• Conservation and sustainable management - essential for using, breeding and

diversification of GenRes – to meet future demands

• Climate change – urgent need for diversification and increased production

• Genetic erosion - continues to reduce genetic diversity in crops, animals and

forest species

Background (2)

Many factors responsible for the situation in Europe:

• lack of a European strategy for GenRes management

• lack of access to information on GenRes

• limited access to GenRes for research and breeding

• lack of transparent information on the current use of GenRes

• lack of access to GenRes material and information from outside Europe

• lack of interaction among the crop, forest and animal GenRes

Objectives of GenRes Bridge (1)

Strengthening the conservation and sustainable use of GenRes in Europe:

• by accelerating collaborative efforts among crop, forest and animal GenRes

networks and wider

• by widening individual network capacities to enhance the status and

effectiveness of conservation and use of GenRes

Objectives of GenRes Bridge (2)

• to increase the effectiveness of sustainable management for crop, forest

and animal GenRes

• widening capacities to increase the knowledge on conserved diversity of

crop, forest and animal GenRes

• to enhance the conservation status of GenRes by establishing high quality,

harmonized standards for GenRes conservation, management and description

• to improve services offered to end-users of GenRes by promoting innovative

ways to share resources and services

CONCEPT

• GenRes Bridge will combine:

• expert knowledge from crop, forest and animal GenRes management • expert knowledge of wider (agro) biodiversity stakeholders and end-users • new scientific information and available demonstration cases

• To develop a European integrated strategy on sustainable management of

GenRes

• To secure long-term food security, non-food products and different functions of

forestry as well as ecosystem resilience

CONCEPT (2)

• GenRes Bridge will:

• improve access and quality of materials and information for conservation,

breeding, farming and forest management

• strengthen capacities of crop, forest and animal GenRes domains

geographically outside the existing three networks

• follow a participatory and transdisciplinary approach integrating

participants with broad and complementary expertise in biodiversity and

GenRes management

METHODOLOGY

GenRes Bridge comprises:

• WP1 - project management

• WP2 - will bring together stakeholders from Europe and beyond from crop, forest

and animal GenRes and wider to share existing knowledge, strategies and

perspectives

• WP3 - will provide scientific knowledge, demonstration cases and standards for

quality management of GenRes

• WP4 - will enhance documentation and information on GenRes and improve

quality and quantity of the data

1. Development and/or implementation of integrated strategies for conservation

and use of crop, forest and animal GenRes as well as for wider biodiversity

2. Enhance user oriented services provided by networks involved in plant

(agriculture and forestry) and animal GenRes management, such as:

• information systems

• genebanks and conservation units

• transfer of GenRes

• communication of GenRes science, methods and guidelines to end-users

Support and role of the WG Documentation and information(1)

Overall concept Genresbridge “also strengthen capacities of crop, forest and animal GenRes domains geographically outside the existing three networks coverage (ENP countries) through knowledge exchange, discussions, training and FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) documentation and information (WP2, WP3, WP4).” Overall methodology “WP4 will enhance documentation and information on GenRes, making it FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) and improve/enhance quality and quantity of the data in central GenRes information systems by linking databases and training data providers “

Support and role of the WG Documentation and Information(2)

Key questions:

• How the project could support the regular activities of the WG and of the ERFP in general?

• How the WG Info and Docu could support the project?
