2014 Horicon Phoenix ProgramSummer Calendar of Events

Welcome to Horicon, a place we like to call home. We are very glad that you have visited and we hope you enjoy the bounty of resources that Horicon has to offer. Hundreds of thousands of visitors come to the area to enjoy the wonderful natural resources, to look for birds in the marsh they’ve never seen before, to hike trails that date back to the days of Native Americans, to hunt and trap, or to bike on roads and trails that offer spectacular vistas of animals and landscapes. Whatever the reason for visiting, there’s one more thing that we’d love for you to know. We call this place our home because we enjoy a lower cost of living and a higher quality of life. The Horicon Phoenix Program has been working to add even more benefits for people who call Horicon “home,” and this booklet is intended to help introduce you to a few of the events around the area that we hope can serve as an invitation for you to join us here.

Horicon Farmers Market

Stop in and visit a Market that is as genuine as the farmers and growers who sell here. The Horicon Farmers Market is one of the few remaining markets that requires the vendors to grow the produce that they sell, and not buy it from a factory farm or outlet. Does your food matter to you? Come see and taste the difference that farming “old school” makes!Fresh baked breads, honey from our Dodge County fields, fabulous art from our local artists and of course, the best produce in Southeast Wisconsin! Know your farmers Know your food Know your Horicon Farmers Market!

Hundreds of free book-sharing boxes are popping up around the country, so why not in Horicon? This project aims to build small waterproof boxes around the city to serve as free libraries. People who use the libraries don’t have to have a library card, or follow any formal checkout procedure. The libraries have signs that simply ask users to return a book; there are no fines if they don’t. Some people donate extra books. It is a wonderful way to encourage reading and recycling of books. Our first installation in 2013 was in Kiwanis Park behind the community gardens. In 2014, we hope to place additional libraries in three more City of Horicon parks. www.littlefreelibrary.org

Playground Improvement ProjectThe Horicon Phoenix Program is coordinating efforts to raise funds for playground equipment upgrades as well as handicap accessible play areas in River Bend, Kiwanis, and Discher Parks in Horicon. Through the generous donations of the Beaver Dam Community Hospital Foundation, Alliant Energy Foundation, United Cooperative, Horicon Girls Scouts and other anonymous local donors, we have raised over $11,500 as of April 1st 2014. We hope to start installing new equipment in the Spring of 2014. Please consider a tax-deductible donation to our Handicap Accessible Playground Project as we work to make our beautiful parks inclusive for all individuals. Contributions may be sent to:

Leroy AirmasterIn the 1980s, Leroy Airmaster was the dominant blues band in a vibrant live blues music scene in southeastern Wisconsin. They performed constantly, and released 4 well received recordings. They received numerous WAMI awards for best blues group. The members of the most popular version of the group reformed in 2010 and continue to perform their unique blend of blues, jazz and rock music.

Kevin FayteRock ‘n Roll TrioRockabillly is one of the earliest styles of rock and roll music, dating to the early 1950s in the United States, especially in the South. As a genre it blends the sound of American folk and Western musical styles, such as country and bluegrass, with that of rhythm and blues, leading to what is considered “classic” rock and roll. Original members Kevin and Joe met at a Stray Cats show in Green Bay in late ‘06. After a couple false starts, they signed Dr. Goetsch in autumn of ‘09 to keep the beat. The band has been jamming, gigging and generally having a good time ever since.Sponsored by: Beaver Dam Dental

ThriftonesThe band, based in Milwaukee, has been winning fans over with ecclectic set lists and high energy performances that come to life on the stage. The four piece group draws its inspiration from an endless pool of musical genres. You might feel a funky 70s jam end and a weird sonic freak-out begin. A spastic and aggressive rocker leads into a crooning waltz. They have played the outdoor festival stage, the cozy coffeehouse, the gallery night art opening and a lot of those clubs you find yourself in after midnight.Sponsored by: Appleton Sign Co.

Don Peachey BandDon Peachey hails from Burnett, Wisconsin, a small town located an hour from Milwaukee. He began playing the accordion at the age of 14. Don made his first paying performance at the civic center in Fairwater, Wisconsin. Except for two years in the U.S. Army, he has been keeping dancers happy with his music ever since.Don was elected bandleader of the year by the Wisconsin Orchestra Leaders Association in 1973 and was inducted into the Wisconsin Polka Hall of Fame in 1998. The band is most visible not only for its recording exposure, but for its numerous appearances in 13 states. They have made an annual tour through Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas for 49 consecutive years.Sponsored by: Krizan Insurance Agency

AthasIrish for “joy and gladness,” this is definitely a band that holds true to their name. Based out of Milwaukee, Athas lights the dance floor on fire with a combination of traditional and newly composed Irish dance tunes. They keep the sounds and roots of Celtic music alive through their use of classic Irish instruments. Fierce fiddle, driving bodhrán, and funky guitar riffs as well as the flute, viola, whistles, concertina, djembe and the spoons come together to lift listeners’ feet, drinks, and spirit.Sponsored by: Ice Cream Station

Cajun StrangersThe Cajun Strangers have been playing the music of the Cajun culture of Southwest Louisiana since 2001. This accordion and fiddle driven music is a traditional style that is still heard every night of the week in the dancehalls, bars, clubs and festivals of Louisiana. The Strangers’ last two CDs - 2007’s ‘Vlase a Deux Temps’, and 2010s ‘Cajun Country Ramble’ - have been released on the Swallow Records label based in Ville Platte, Louisiana, and both have won the Prix DeHors de Nous (‘the best outside of us’) given by the Cajun French Music Association for the best CD of the year from a Cajun band from outside Louisiana.Sponsored by: Horicon Bank

Blessed Feathers with special guestCarrie Ann SeymourFour years ago, Donivan Berube left his home in the Sunshine State and headed north to West Bend, WI. Taking up work at a local restaurant, Berube was introduced to Jacquelyn Beupre, a Wisconsin native looking for some help recording her solo music. From this serendipitous introduction, Blessed Feathers was born. The two have been recording together ever since, nurturing a musical and personal partnership highlighted by an on-stage marriage proposal in December 2012.Sponsored by: Horicon Bank

Milwaukee Hot ClubMilwaukee Hot Club plays “gypsy jazz,” the music of the late great Django Reinhardt and his modern descentants. Their music is a high energy mix of swing, bossa and gypsy samba rhythms. Although primarily instrumental, vocal tunes comprise up to 20% of their set. MHC is 2 gypsy guitars and upright bass, occasionally augmented with clarinet, sax, violin and/or percussion. Milwaukee Hot Club performs both acoustically and with amplification designed to preserve the acoustic qualities of their instruments.Sponsored by: Appleton Sign Co.

Lisa Ridgely and The Fainting RoomMilwaukee-based folk-rock-pop band that specializes in tight lady harmonies, searing guitar solos and songs about nicknamed ovaries. The group showcases infec-tious pop melodies with darker undertones, rooted in a feminine perspective. After performing her fe-folk songs as a solo artist for a few years, Lisa decided to expand her sound with a backing band, The Fainting Room. The Fainting Room features Level 5 Guitar Jedi (2012 WAMI Award-winning Guitarist of the Year) Ryan Elliott. North-woods siren Sara Moilanen, 2011 WAMI Female Vocalist of the Year, plays bass and harmonizes with Lisa. She also lends her vocal abilities and bass playing to vintage country trio The Whiskey Belles. Craig Mertes lends some rock ‘n roll perspective from behind the drum kit in between attempts to attach his drums to his bicycle. Sponsored by: American Legion Auxiliary Post 157

Vitrolum RepublicThe Milwaukee-based Vitrolum Republic’s sound is a combination of various styles that can best be described as classically infused folk music. Over the course of their first full-length album, For Highbrow Sideshows and Rowboat Serenades, they cover many different styles of music, but all in a way that feels rooted in a style all their own, which they have come to call Gypsy Noir.Their original compositions blur genres, combining classical elements with singer-song-writer, folk, bluegrass, blues and gypsy tango styling. Their music is diverse, and draws upon the acoustic instrumentation that each member brings to the state; violin, piano, acoustic guitar, accordion, mandolin banjo upright bass and a variety of percussion instruments.Sponsored by: Beaver Dam Community Hospitals

Tweed FunkMilwaukee-based R&B machine Tweed Funk is a powerhouse in the tradition of Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, laced with the stage presence of Luther Allison. The band could be compared to neo-throwback soul merchants like Charles Walker and the Dynamites or even Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, although Tweed’s Stax-influenced sound is maxed out with a horn section that’s loud and in charge.~ Mark Uricheck, Living Blues Magazine

With Smokey up front, singin’ those soulful blues; JD on guitar, playing those smokin’ hot guitar riffs; those hot horns blowing the roof off with Jon Lovas on sax and Kevin Klemme on trumpet, (but you know that I love horn bands); that great bassist, Eric Madunic and drummer Nick Lang holding the groove, it just don’t get no better than that! You can’t go wrong, ‘cause this band is SMOKIN’ HOT!!!~ Dick Stephenson, Blue Monday Monthly

“The old house is quite beautiful with origi-nal woodwork and stained glass. Along our way to the room, the innkeeper explained that there was complimentary sodas and microwave popcorn in the common area along with a wide array of DVDs. Before

handing over our old-fashioned skeleton key to our room, she asked what time we would

be down for breakfast so that it would be ready when we were ready, a great personal

A Word About SponsorshipA question we’re often asked is, “How do you guys at the Horicon Phoenix Program pay for all of this stuff?” Quite simply, very little of what we do would be possible if not for the generous gifts and donations from our Sponsors. Businesses and individuals contribute to us, because they believe in what we’re doing and they want to give back to you – our community. For that we owe them our thanks and gratitude. Throughout this booklet are ads designed to help identify the businesses that sponsor our programs and projects. The more you search them out and the more you continue to buy locally, the more Horicon’s local economy will thrive. Let them know how much you appreciate their support of the Horicon Phoenix Program. They need to know that their donation has had an impact, so your feedback is incredibly important to keep Horicon a City on the Rise. Lastly, if you would like to see your business featured in the next issue of our magazine, send an email to [email protected] for details.

Thank you!Your Horicon Phoenix Program Board of Directors

Built in 1927, the dance hall has seen a lot activity over the years. Recently, however, it has fallen into a state of disrepair. The Horicon Phoenix Program is working to raise money to replace the damaged boards, repaint the exterior, sand and refinish the flooring, upgrade the electrical, and make other repairs to the building. The Horicon Phoenix Program will donate up to $5,000 in matching funds for this project. Additionally, we will coordinate the volunteer efforts to provide labor for the project. Your tax-deductible contribution will help keep the Dance Hall from being condemned and allow it to continue to be used for Autumn Art on The Marsh, weddings, dances, concerts, family reunions, etc. Let’s work together to save this treasure!
