Duplication of CD’s and DVD’s w31 The Old School, Border part 1 BY PHILIP NEESE Two border schools play an important part in the life of Wally Hultstrand and his brothers and sister. Bjorklund School was located near Nashua, in Northern Mon- tana. Silver Creek School was located six miles east of Baudette, MN near the Rainy River on the Canadian Bor- der. These schools no longer exist; however, in their time they played an important role in the lives of some very hardy people. Wally Hultstrand lived on the North Shore of Mille Lacs Lake in Aitkin County for over twenty years. In his retirement years he started and operated the “Up North Realty.” Wally was a CPA who became a part of the leader- ship of Peavy Co. He raised three children as a single parent after his wife died of a brain tumor. He was also a Deacon at Malmo Free Church. Wally died of bone cancer on June 29, 2007. Wally’s sister, Marilyn Tien- suu describes some of the events that shaped Wally’s Life. “This family of five children were all born in Nashua, Montana. The fam- ily moved to Baudette MN in 1932 and lived on a farm that bordered the Rainy River and Canada.” When Wally was two years old he had been playing outside. His older brother Win ran into the house cry- ing, “Wa Wa (his nickname for Wally).” Clara (Mrs. Hultstrand) ran outside and saw Wally hang- ing from the top rung of a ladder, which was up against the garage with piles of iron metal below him. She was able to get him down but he was ever the curious one. At the age of five, it was discovered that Wally had had Rheumatoid Arthritis. This crippling disease settled in his hands and wrists. The pain grew progressively worse. At the age of ten you would often see Wally stand- ing by the kitchen wood stove soaking his hands in hot water to ease the pain. This pain never went away. The University of Minnesota Hospital was not able to of- fer any help for this pain. Perhaps the pain spurred Wally on in life. Anyway he wanted to excel in every way possible. Wally attended Bjorklund School in Montana with his brothers and sister for his first years. Wally was ten years old when the family moved to the farm on Rainy River. Wally was determined to ex- cel at everything. He played all sports at the little border school. He worked hard at his studies and was a cham- pion at the spelling bee. Marilyn describes Wally’s interest in science and ex- periments, “Wally convinced me to help him catch some chickens and take them up on the roof of the barn. He wanted to throw them in the air and see if they would fly. Mother caught us in the act and she made sure that Wally understood his responsibili- ties for his little sister.” Clara was the treasurer of the Silver Creek School, how- ever, she had so much work in the house and garden that the accounts for the school became tangled. Wally at age 12 was able to balance the books. He got to keep do- ing that job, which was good for him as he was limited in the chores that he could do. Milking cows was impossible for him and chopping wood was painful but the book- keeping fit him perfectly. Victor and Clara Hultstrand encouraged their children in schooling and were deter- Wally on left and twin brother Walt on their way to Bjorklund School in Nashua, Montana in the late 1920s. Wally as he was known in Aitkin County mined that each child would receive a college education. They did require that the children worked hard on the farm. Only 20 of the 169 acres were cleared and so the trees and brush had to be removed. Selective burning was used but not everything was burned. The stumps and brush had to be piled so that they would burn. Clara would walk half way to school in the afternoon and meet the children. She would be carrying their work clothes. The boys would change clothes behind some bushes and then would go to work helping their father until dark. (Next week, The Old School, Border 2) Eurasian watermilfoil found The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has confirmed the discovery of Eurasian watermilfoil in six new lakes, all but one of which are within 50 miles of the Twin Cities. Eurasian watermilfoil, or simply milfoil, is now known to occur in 197 bodies of water in the state since it was discov- ered in the late 1980s. The majority of infested wa- ter bodies are in central and north-central Minnesota, ac- cording to Chip Welling, DNR Eurasian Watermilfoil Program coordinator. The following lakes have been added to the list of Min- nesota waters infested with invasive species: Kimball Lake, Crow Wing County; Maple Lake, Wright County; Spectacle Lake, Isanti County; McMahon Lake, Scott County; and Big Lake, Sherburne County. In addition, milfoil was dis- covered in one body of water with no public water access: Wilmes Lake, Washington County. The full list of infested waters is available on the DNR Web site at www.dnr.state.mn.us. Despite finding more evi- dence of the plant’s spread, DNR officials said milfoil is still known in fewer than 200 lakes across the state, thanks to continued vigilance by boaters. The DNR urges boaters to continue to take precautions to avoid spreading the plant.
