Principal’s Report

Induction of Leaders We held our induction of school leaders at assembly earlier this week. School Captains were inducted at our Awards Night last year so it was the turn of our House Captains, Bus Captains and SRC to be inducted. Pleasingly, also, it was the announcement of the Junior School Captain and Junior School Vice-Captain. I am pleased to say that two wonderful students have been selected for the roles – Claire Oataway is Junior School Captain and Esther Kelly is Junior School Vice-Captain. Our local Yarriambiack Shire Councillor, Helen Ballentine, spoke to the students about leadership, taking responsibility and about working to help the community. She then presented badges to all of the students who have been elected to leadership positions. Congratulations to all of the students who have put their hands up to take on these roles. You are showing responsibility and leadership and a willingness to have your voice on student issues. A full list of the student leaders is published elsewhere in this newsletter.

Study Skills & Time Management Last week Mrs Jones and I met with each of the Year 12 students to confirm their subjects and to offer as-

sistance and support for the 2020 school year. One of the interesting outcomes of the meetings was that

all of the students doing VCE subjects have a homework/study schedule but very few adhere to it. The Ele-

vate sessions last Thursday provided excellent advice to the Year 10-12 students on how to create a home-

work/study schedule which is manageable, achievable and works effectively. If you have a child in Years 10-

12, please ask them how they are going with developing a study schedule based on the model provided by

Elevate. Then, in a month’s time, check again to see whether the study schedule is a workable document.

Recommended study time for Year 10-12 students is 1-3 hours per night and up to 6 hours at the weekend.

Outdoor Ed Anyone for cooking? Molly (Year 8) is showing her skills with outdoor cooking using

a mini-stove to prepare to make hot chocolate. Mr Anders is running an outdoor

education class as part of our Year 8/9 STEAM program.

School Council Elections Nominations are now open for parent representatives on School Council. There are three parent vacan-cies currently available for parent nominations. The term of office is two years. Current members whose term has expired are Adrian Horman, Tom White and Julie Grace. All three are eligible for renomination. School Council is responsible for policy decisions as well as maintaining an overview of the achieve-ments of the school. It has an important role in the overall financial management of the school. There are sub-committees for policy, grounds and buildings and finances. The Policy Committee usually meets on the first Thursday of the month. Both Finance and Grounds and Buildings meet just before Council meetings which are usually scheduled for the second Wednesday of the month. Timeline: Nominations Open – Thursday 13th February. Nominations close – Thursday 20th February.

Student and Staff Membership of School Council Our two school captains, Tegan Frankel and Flynn Grace, are members of School Council along with two elected student representatives. MacKenzie Bellinger has one more year on Council and there is one vacancy for a student representative. Elections are currently being held to fill the student vacancy. Similarly, there are two staff vacancies on Council which are currently being filled as part of the normal cycle of council elections.

Policy Update Bullying Prevention Policy Hopetoun P-12 College is committed to providing a safe and respectful learning environment where bullying will not be tolerated.

Bullying occurs when someone, or a group of people, deliberately and repeatedly upset, harass, intimidate, threaten or hurt another person or damage their property, reputation or social acceptance. Bullying may be direct or indirect, physical or verbal, and includes cyberbullying. Bullying is not a one-off disagreement between two or more people or a situation of mutual dislike. In this Policy any reference to ‘bullying’ includes all forms of bullying including cyberbullying.

Year 3—6 Primary Prattle

The Year 3-6 class has settled in well to school routine. They have been attending swimming lessons on Mondays during their Physical Education class, as they have been preparing for the school house swimming sports on Thursday. They are all excited about attending and representing their teams. Good luck Banksia and Yarrara.

Leadership seems to be something the students seem very keen to be a part of this year. Claire Oataway and Esther Kelly recently went through the process of election for Junior School Captains. Where Claire was elected Junior School Captain and Esther becoming the Junior Vice Captain. Congratulations to both of the girls.

Our class would like to welcome Oliver Wood. Ollie as he likes to be known is a Year 6 student, he has fitted into class well and has taken on a leadership role as Junior House Captain for Banksia. While Anas Mostofa has been chosen by his peers to become the Junior Yarrara house Captain. Well done to both boys.

Another set of leaders within our class, come from two Year 5 students Alynah Glare and Jazmyn Hinckley. They have taken up roles on the Student Representative Council and will become the voice for the primary section of Hopetoun’s P-12 College. Well done girls.

The students have also been enjoying their lessons with a highlight of the week being their science lessons.

They have started with a positive attitude towards these lessons as they have been learning to use magnify-

ing glasses and microscopes to see what they can find in soil.

Students have also been having a go at writing recounts. Ollie and Jazmyn wrote theirs about the storm we experienced last week.

Yesterday there was a huge thunder storm, it was so loud. The storm went on all night and it was hard to get to sleep. It was the first time my dog Scout had heard a thunder storm, she was really scared. Scout was so scared that she was sitting on my bed, I gave her a hug then feel asleep. When I woke up in the morning there was water everywhere. By Oliver

Last night there was a loud boom, crash noise, it was the start of a big thunder storm. I couldn’t go to sleep

because it was too loud. In the morning there was a big, big puddle next to my Nan and Pop’s house. The

puddle was so big it went all the way to the walkway at the school gate. By Jazmyn
