    o your passion or people in need?AB: Weve gone rom 43 subsidiaries and branches to 100Chapters in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean

    in two years. Our response to the needs o people ollowingHurricane Katrina showed we are capable o providingeective immediate and long-term disaster assistance.And each year on Martin Luther King Day, we mobilizethousands o volunteers to go into our nations inner cities

    to clean streets, educate amilies onhealth issues, reurbish houses andprovide encouragement to the poor

    in our midst.

    Hww:How are we preparingour young people or acts o

    service now and in the years

    to come?

    AB: Tis is a major emphasis orus. Our National Youth Advisory

    Council (NYAC) is comprised o 15 outstanding highschool and college students representing six regionsacross the U.S. I see this group and the thousands o

    young people they represent serving as the emergingleaders in building our domestic community serviceprograms. Tese young men and women are the uturegeneration o service leaders that are already changingthe world. Our Campus Ministry Conerence Daysservice days have seen 1,700, 2,200 and 1,100 studentsactively involved in New Orleans, Chicago and Athens.(continued on page 3)

    We recently talked with Antonio Boyd, HOPE worldwide CommunityService Division Leader. His passion or organizing volunteers toserve the poor is refected in his answers to our questions regardingincreasing volunteerism in North America.

    A teens commitment to serving the poor through HOPE worldwide

    I I had to choose one event that changed my perspective it would be becoming aChristian and learning about Gods grace or my lie. Later, when I became a membero HOPE worldwides National Youth Advisory Council, I began to see more and morethe value not only o believing but o putting my aith into action.

    His name is Maurice Harried. Bullied and harassed in middle school, he now maintainsa 3.9 GPA, while serving as a Student Commissioner or the City o Baltimore and is onHOPE worldwides National Youth Advisory Council (NYAC). With a mother who abuseddrugs and a ather who spent time behind bars, this young man chose a better way to live.

    THE BOSTON CHAPTER REACHES OUT TO

    NEIGHBORS IN NEED

    We dont have the words to express our gratitudeor the tremendous eort being made by the more than

    37,000 North American volunteers who make a continualcommitment to serve the poor. Tey serve rom Hawaii toHaiti, rom Los Angeles to Philadelphia, and rom orontoto Houstonand more than 100 cities in between.

    One example is the Boston Chapter o HOPE worldwidewhich provides hope and help though the compassionate

    work o its volunteers:

    Hundreds participate in a variety of fundraisingevents to support the Framingham Food Pantryand other local volunteer eorts.

    Volunteers partner with Rebuilding Togethertoassist the elderly and handicapped with basichome repairs.

    On MLK Day 2011, 520 volunteers distributedre prevention inormation to 43,500 homes.

    Many volunteers have also participatedin the newly ormed Community ServiceBrigades which provide health care services toimprovished communities in Central America.

    Tese volunteers know theres no better exercise or theheart than reaching down and picking someone else up.

    EMPOWERING A GENERATION: THE POWER

    OF SATURDAY ACADEMY

    Volunteers working through Chapters oHOPE worldwide continue to create an environment

    or lie-changing experiences in the lives o at-risk youSaturday Academy programs introduce students tocaring adults who dedicate Saturday mornings to helpyoung people achieve victories in learning rather thanrustration. Te program goals include:

    Building character by instilling positive lifelessons

    Motivating and inspiring learning and successby developing and reinorcing basic academicskills

    Developing a knowledge base of dierentdisciplines through sports, the arts and varioustypes o enrichment activities

    Its conventional wisdom to say a pessimist sees thglass o water as hal empty, and the optimist sees thesame glass as hal ull. But a caring volunteer withHOPE worldwide sees a glass o water and immediatelbegins looking or someone who is thirsty.

    RESPONDING AND REBUILDING AFTER

    DISASTER

    Since September 2005, over 7,500 volunteers, havebeen able to serve an average o 1,600 hours each monthrough the Gul Coast Chapter. Tese volunteers havgutted over 2,600 homes along the Gul Coast, saving

    homeowners nearly $52 million and restoring more th50 houses so amilies could return.

    Volunteers who have assisted victims o res,earthquakes, tornados and hurricanes oen have simirefections on their acts o service: Im on the scenebecause this is where God wants me to be. I volunteerbecause its who I am. By sharing mysel with people in

    need Im becoming the person God designed me to be.

    Hopeully, the volunteer stories ofered in this

    newsletter encourage your spirit and inspire you to

    consider how you can use your talents to reach out to

    help a neighbor in need.

    AB: Yes, indeed. Weve been working with Canada and the Caribbeanto build the same inrastructure in their countries as we have in the

    United States. Te good news is the 12 churches in Canada havedecided to add HOPE worldwide to their 2020 Vision plans and arenow ready to appoint chapter directors in each city. Te Caribbeanwill soon ollow as Will Archer and Peter Swaby coordinate thateort. God is moving and the word is spreading. Every committedChristian will soon have the opportunity to serve the poor througha HOPE worldwide Chapter in North America.
