PASTOR RICHARD FEYEN CALLED!

PAGE 3 HOPE HAPPENINGS ~ MARCH 2010

To All Hope Church Members and Friends --

Please all know, and rejoice, that Richard Feyen is now Hope Church's new minister.

At the church's congregational meeting held Sunday, February 28 immediately following the worship service, the members attending voted, by private written ballot, to call him to serve our Hope Church!

Richard began his full time service to our church starting the next day, Monday, March 1.

Before the vote, the Pulpit (Search) Committee members (Helen Jane Anschutz, Cal Bonnivier, Nancy Feld, Jason Feldman, Pat Scieszinski, Dave Tauber, and Patsy Vollrath) each spoke, passionately, sincerely, and convincingly, of their strong belief that Richard is the right person to lead our congregation.

Perhaps it was the committee's thorough work. Perhaps it was also their much-appreciated report Sunday. Perhaps it was the many opportunities the church members have had, over the last eight weeks, to meet Richard. Certainly it was Richard, himself. The result of the written ballot was 76 votes "Yes," and none opposed. Unanimous!

time since we've seen our church so happy. And, it has been. Thanks to everyone for your support and patience. By all indications Sunday, they were worth it!

Bart Munson, Moderator

When Richard returned from the Fellowship Hall to be told the result of the vote, he walked into standing, prolonged applause. There were smiles and conversations of approval, relief, and excitement as all adjourned to the Fellowship Hall to celebrate.

Richard's "Call to Church Pastor" (the applicable writ-ten contract) was signed by Richard and by Hope Church immediately after the vote. His official installation is expected to be some time in April, after the requisite United Church of Christ "paperwork" is completed, including meeting between Richard and the UCC Northeast Association leadership. In the meantime, he will have an opportunity to get to know clergy of the area, whom he is anxious to invite to his installation service.

It seems as if it's been a long

REPORT FROM THE TRUSTEES: FEBRUARY 2010

PAGE 4 HOPE HAPPENINGS ~ MARCH 2010

Once again there are many thanks to members of Hope Church for their efforts to keep the structural aspects of our church strong and functioning. I may not have heard about everything, but first kudos go to Brian Harris for fixing the “impossible leaky drinking fountain.” After much research on the Internet he learned about the possible source of the problem, ordered the crucial part and proceeded to take the mechanism apart and put it back together. Thank you, Brian!

Second kudos go to Jim Williamson for replacing the ceiling tiles in the pastor’s office and, just maybe, performing enough magic that water spots might not return. If Jim’s fix proves successful, the tiles in the other office will be changed, too; but it is a messy business!

while the donations are recorded in Church Windows, and then return to the bank with the deposit.

Please talk to Ron Maclean or Betsy Williamson if you are interested. I’m sure we can work out a schedule even if there is some part of this procedure that doesn’t quite fit your free time.

February was quite kind to our snow removal budget, but I want to remind people that there is salt in the plastic bin inside the front court-yard for icy conditions that still occur.

The next Trustees’ meeting is Thursday, March 11th at 7:00pm in the Fellowship Hall.

Betsy Williamson Chair, Trustees

We want to be sure the source of the drips is stopped.

Kudos also go to all the contributors to The Maureen Connelly-Turk Fund. It is almost fully subscribed, and once the final figure is reached we will work with our new pastor and committees to Grow This Church!

Last month I wrote about the procedures Willard Dhein goes through to deposit our Sunday collections on Mondays. Holly Feldman was going to do these deposits while Willard takes a well-earned trip, however Holly has taken a permanent position with the American Folklore Theater and won’t be able to do the job. We need a volunteer who could pick up the bank bag at Baylake Bank, bring it to the church, make out the deposit slip

TREASURER ’S FINANCE SUMMARY

January’s Financial Figures

Our income for January was $10,561 and our expenses for the month were $9,730, leaving a net income of $831, which we were happy to see.

We received a payment from the Gen Donovan estate, which was applied to our Line

of Credit account. We’ve been told, however, that the IRS is not finished with its analysis and we are waiting to hear about a final resolution.

Thank you to all who volunteered to work with our youth during February. Maetta and Ralph Chase, and Suzanne Holvenstat did Synergy programs during February. Nancy Feld, Claire Minahan and Jenny Lou Carmody each spent a Sunday morning with our littlest learners in the Foundations class room. On February 28, all the kids were in the Sanctuary to hear Rev. Richard Feyen preach.

March is sometimes a difficult month. The winter is dragging and the snow keeps coming. Our snow birds have not yet returned and we miss them! But our kids are here and lively! Our Foun-dations classroom is usually full with 3-6 kids! Our Synergy class has been having only 1 or 2 students and sometime none. As such, volunteers may plan a session but sometimes no youth are there to participate. I don't think we can, as Jeff Birch says, "grow a church" with out offering youth programs. In order to have youth in our church, we

must plan for them - and you have volunteered to teach them! Thank you! There are only a couple of dates left which still need Leaders/Teachers for the Synergy and Foundations classes during the rest of this school year. The days are getting longer, and the swans are on the lake -- Spring is coming! Synergy (grades 3-9) and Foundations (grades 4k-3) Schedule for March:

• Mar. 7: Mark Nelson/Polio Plus; Betsy Williamson assisting in Synergy. Jenny Lou Carmody in Foundations.

• Mar. 14: Tom Minahan/Dahli Lama in Synergy; Nancy Feld in Foundations; Confirmation Class.

• Mar. 21: Nanette Anschutz/Friendship in Synergy; Jenny Lou Carmody in Foundations.

• Mar. 28: Palm Sunday. Colleen Crocker-MacMillin/ YIG in Synergy; ?? in Foundations.

• Apr. 4: Easter. No Synergy; or Foundations.

Our confirmation Class had a busy February! The 7 high school students met with Rev. Reed and discussed sacraments; Brett Hanson to discuss Buddhism; and attended Corpus Christi Mass, then had a tour and lengthy discussion regarding Catholicism. They also made those delicious cakes for our Shrove Tuesday Cake Walk. Thank you for participating so readily! The next Confirmation Class will be Sunday March 14 with Rev. Feyen and then the schedule will be defined after that.

We'll be planning a ski trip to Ski Brule in March and/or a kayak trip down the Peshtigo Flowage in June. These would be fun events for any middle and high school students! Call me if you can help plan or chaperone these trips.

HOPE CHURCH LOST & FOUND

We have a number of things in the Lost & Found box - on the coat rack across from the office.

Eye-glasses, sunglasses, gloves, even a lovely pinkish spring coat.

We want to find the

owners before the next rummage sale (the 1st week in May) so you won’t have to buy your own things back!

children thought it was such a fun party. The food was delicious and the decorations were festive and colorful. The company, as usual, was outstanding. Thank you for making such a nice event. Your time and efforts are much appreciated. Your efforts, along with all of the other efforts of unsung heroes at our church, make the glue that binds our church together.

This Shrove Tuesday party is a perfect example of why our family loves Hope Church. People here are welcoming,

open, and caring. They want to have a place where learning, spiritual growth, and fun are meaningful and connective. Keep up the good work, God bless you for your time and energy, and thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Sincerely, The Rittle Family

Dear Members of the Social Life Committee,

On Behalf of our family and all of the attendees of the Shrove Tuesday celebration, we wanted to extend our warmest thanks for a wonderful evening. We cannot say enough about how much fun we had. It is obvious that the members of the committee are both dedicated to creat-ing special occasions at our church that foster a caring environment and are skilled at making this happen. The activities were fun and friendly for all ages. Our

MISSION AND ACTION

PAGE 8 HOPE HAPPENINGS ~ MARCH 2010

Mission and Action

Suddenly it’s March! We on the Board of Mission and Action appreciate your con-tinuing sense of commitment to others who need our help. Here are three areas that merit our attention in March.

One Great Hour of Sharing For the Month of March

An envelope and brochure are enclosed in your Hope Happenings. The One Great Hour of Sharing annual collection replenishes the Disaster Fund of the United Church of Christ. This year funds for Haiti are the main focus. The Disaster Fund stands ready to aid citizens wherever disaster strikes. If you have donated funds for relief in Haiti, thank you for your generosity. You may still donate with checks made out to Hope Church. In the memo line write OGHS or Haiti.

Feed My People Food Cart

As you have read in the newspaper or learned other ways, requests for food items are increasing. For March we suggest:

Week One: Soup Week Two: Cereal Week Three: Paper products Week Four: Personal items (Also recommended are peanut butter and jelly or canned goods such as veggies, fruit, meat or fish,)

Substitute other items or cash donations if you prefer.

Hope Church Offers Food 4 Thought Canvas Bags

Purchase a reusable canvas bag ($7) from Cal Holvenstot. You can continuously reuse this sturdy, handsome tote and help grow this church.

Thank you for preserving and enhancing life for others en-dangered by a natural disaster or the economic downturn.

For about a year now, Hope Church members have been participating in the free, community-wide dinner, “Loaves and Fishes Community Meals Ministry,” held the first, third and fourth Fridays of each month at NWTC in Sturgeon Bay. Our participation has been in the form of providing dessert (for 200 people) several Fridays a year.

We are in need of volunteers to make dessert(s) and drop them off at the NWTC kitchen betw. 1 and 4pm on the assigned Friday. The main requirements are that the desserts be easily portioned and served, non-refrigerated, and that no nuts are included in any way.

Brownies. Bars. Cookies. Cup-cakes. Cake, etc. Delivered on disposable plates.

These simple and delicious hot meals are provided free of charge to everyone/anyone in the Door County community and diversity is valued. You are welcome to come to dinner yourself – regularly or just once in awhile! Other churches and local businesses provide the dinner ingredients, kitchen workers, servers, set-up and clean-up crew. Desserts are provided on a rotating basis, and we’re pleased that Hope is in that rotation.

The dates we’ve been assigned for 2010 are as follows: Feb. 26, May 7, July 2, Sep. 17, & Dec. 3.

Those who are willing to bake or provide dessert, please mark those dates on your calendars. I’ll send out a reminder/request as each date draws near. If you have any questions, please catch me at church or call me at 920-559-1656. We seem to have a core group of about 8 dessert providers, but we can always use more. So if you can help one Friday, but not another, that’s just fine too.

The dinners are a wonderful gift to the community – an example of “many hands make light work.” Our part is really simple, but very important. And thanks in advance for your participation.

ENDOWMENT GRANTS AVAILABLE!

LOAVES & FISHES PARTICIPATION NEEDED

PAGE 9 HOPE HAPPENINGS ~ MARCH 2010

The purpose of the Hope Church Endowment Fund is to provide a vehicle for long term financial success for the church. Money that is given is invested and each year 5% of those funds become available for groups within the church community for projects. The money is distributed to groups via a granting process.

The Fund’s value as of 1/1/10 was $107,605.98. That means for 2010 there is $5,380.29 available for granting requests.

The criteria and process of writing a grant is available in the office at church. Soon, all criteria, applica-tions and information relating to the Endowment Fund will be

available on the church’s website. That means for now applications must be filled out on paper and submitted to the committee by turning them in at the office. Soon, the whole process will be electronic - a move we hope will make applying easier.

The application requires grants to include:

1. Statement of Need/Opportunity

2. Objectives

3. Programs/Activities

4. Evaluation

5. Project Budget

The application should be turned into the office and at that time the

Endowment Committee will evaluate the grant. One thing the committee reviews is how well the proposed project will uphold the Mission Statement of the Church. (In other words, the proposed project should reflect some activity or action which supports what we believe at Hope).

Applications are on a first come, first served basis. Once the allotted money has been distributed for the year, no more money will be available until the next calendar year.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact any committee member. They are Jerry Bloom, John Harling, Mark Jinkins or Eric Paulsen.
