In the recent AustralianOpen tennis tournament, it was interesting to seethe intensity and accuracy of each and every servedelivered. No player walked up to the service line andtapped the ball over the net. Every serve was giventhe adequate preparation time to ensure that thedelivery was as effective as possible. From the ball

toss, to the connection and follow through, everythingwas delivered with precision and power. Regardlessof the fact that hundreds of balls were served in eachgame, each one received complete attention to detail, backed by strategy and years of dedicated training.

If this is the attention given to each serve in orderto win a tennis tournament, how much more shouldwe give our all every time we serve the Lord! Justas years of passion, training and discipline go intoeach tennis serve, we ought to devote even greaterpassion, training and dedication to the developmentof the way we serve others and the Lord. Whetherin our workplaces or place of education, whether inword or deed, whether in a professional context or asocial context, we are called to serve the Lord and

glorify Him in all we do.

And whatever you do, do it heartily,as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ. (Colossians 3:23-24NKJV)

What would our lives would be like if we put suchpassion and devotion into serving the Lord as tennisplayers devote to serving in a game? What kind ofperson would we become if we devoted even just afew moments a day to developing the way we serve? Many of us spend time developing our skills andexpertise for our vocation, but how much time dowe spend developing a servants heart? How muchtime do we spend building the fruit of the Spirit inour lives? Let us all be encouraged to increase thequality of our service to the Lord. Like any athlete,

developing the necessary skills and quality takestime and effort, coupled with discipline and guidance. There will be times when it will be dif cult, but let uspersevere and dedicate ourselves to developing in asystematic manner, with the goal of excellence.

Jesus set before us the ultimate example in the waythat He served. No matter where He went,

    no matter what He was

doing,He always took the timeto serve people whether it was through healing, teaching, discipling, or even rebuking and correcting. He developed Himself and devoted Himself tolearning the Scriptures and walking with His Fathereach and every day. Having built such an amazingfoundation, He was then able to serve in an incrediblecapacity, touching many lives in just a few shortyears. At the heart of it, Jesus was not concernedwith fame or fortune, He was passionate aboutserving. Mark puts it like this:

For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many. (Mark 10:45 NKJV)

If serving was at the very heart of all that Jesus did,it should also be at the heart of all we do. In tennis, abig serve can mean the difference between a victoryand a loss. In life with Christ we already have thevictory, but a big serve can make all the difference inthe victory others experience. Have you come to beserved or to serve? May we all be inspired by Christto serve big.

There is much we can learn from a tennismatch, as Ps Dr David Gunawan encouragesyou to develop your service game.

We do not believe in being pew warmers, Kin Yew Tengsays, we believe in being part of the body of Christ andserving God in any capacity.

This is the attitude Kin Yew and Elaine Teng have had sincethey became Christians more than 20 years ago. And so itwas when they rst arrived at Hope Church the couple, with their two young daughters, were ready to serve in anyway they could.

Kin Yew started out in the ushering ministry, greetingpeople as they arrived for Sunday church services andmaking newcomers feel welcome. Elaine began teaching atHopeKids, including her own girls, and helping the childrenat Hope Church grow in their relationship with God.

While they continued to grow in their Christian faith throughthe Churchs discipleship program, Kin Yew and Elainealso found themselves growing in their capacity and desireto serve God. What is most important is keeping a closerelationship with God, reminding ourselves why we areserving, who we are serving and staying focused, Kin Yewsays. Elaine adds, When we taste and know that God isgood, we will want to love and serve Him more.

Kin Yew became involved in the CARE ministry, ensuringthat new Christians are taken care of and church membersare growing spiritually. Developing her expertise in workingwith children, Elaine now organises Upbeat, a schoolholiday program for Primary and High School students.

When Kin Yew and Elaine Teng stepped intoHope Church in January 2007, they were

passionate Christians with a hunger to serveGod. Three years on, the dedicated couple areleading various ministries and helping othersdevelop a passion for God and His work. Karen Tong discovers what keeps their re for Godburning bright.

It is also wonderful that the Pastors and leaders haveset great examples in serving God, Elaine says. Do youknow that Ps Aileen used to sweep the oor in church? Doyou know that Aunty Grace cleans the toilets? she asks.

Kin Yew and Elaine also head up the churchs facilitiesteam a group of people who ensure Hope Churchsbuilding is functioning at its best at all times. During theteams Working Saturdays, Elaine has been encouragedto see the team she affectionately calls them the boys

put in their time and effort to help out at the Church, when they could have been somewhere else. The boysgave up quite a few of their precious Saturdays and publicholidays, Elaine says.

Kin Yew says that he always encourages the team to givetheir best to God, We constantly remind ourselves thatGod has given us His best and that we are serving theKing of Kings, and we also try to install that in those thatwe serve with. And they also always remember to havefun while they are serving God. In our meetings we hadlots of fun laughing at each others ideas about how tosolve some of the problems in facility, Elaine says.

Just as the Pastors and leaders have encouraged themand motivated them to serve God, Kin Yew and Elaineare also passing on their passion to the people who workwith them. Kin Yew says that sharing a clear vision forthe team was important, There is so much to do and sofew workers so having a clear vision help us to focus andencourage others to serve. Once the team catches the

vision, Elaine adds, the motivation and enthusiasm willfollow.

Valuing team members and encouraging team spiritis also important in keeping passionate about servingGod. After a busy year, Kin Yew and Elaine organised abarbecue to thank all the people who have helped in thefacilities ministry and honour their work. We hope to builda team spirit and encourage each other, Elaine says, andof course, in Hope Church, eating together always helpsto forge a stronger bond of love.

ENLIVENING CAREGIVERS:Caring for our silent heroesCaregivers of people livingwith a chronic illness sacri ceso much of their own lives foranother and their own needsare often neglected. EnliveningCaregivers is a program thathelps caregivers nd a littlespot of joy during hospitalvisits, and reminds them thatsomeone cares for them.

For over a year, Matt has been going tohospital four times a week for dialysis, andhas undergone countless painful and riskymedical procedures. He has end-stage

kidney disease, which means his kidneyscannot remove waste from his blood. Thedialysis machine keeps him alive.

His older si ster, Maddy, has beena constant presence and supportfor her brother, in the hospital andat home. She says, You sacri cea lot. Its a big responsibility andyou have to prioritise him rst.You need to change your lifeto suit them and you cant plananything in your own life. Thehardest thing she says is watching him dodialysis, and having to go through all the pain

    and the operations.

For some families, this has been their life forover 16 years.

These family caregivers are silent heroes.Theyre battling constantanxiety, exhaustion anduncertainty, and makingunimaginable sacri ces intheir own lives, so they cansupport and help managethe complex medical needsof their loved one, saysDr Allison Tong, Program

    Coordinator for Enlivening Caregivers.

in hospital for the families caring for a childdiagnosed with chronic kidney disease.Since December 2008, EnCa has beenorganising in-hospital activities such asbeading, sewing, sketching and card-making, and providing catering with the helpof donations from local businesses.

During an activity, one mother says, Itpasses the time and relaxes us. We learnnew things. This allows me to have time offfrom the medical world.

None of this would be possible, however, without the support of volunteers, communitygroups and local businesses. Local bakeries

and patisseries have week in and weekout donated food to caregivers families, while various groups have given of theirtime to run arts and craft workshops anddemonstrations.

EnCa is really driven by a passion tohonour, support and care for familycaregivers of people living with chronicillness, doing what we can to help make their

journey a little easier, Allison says.

And for some caregivers, being givensomething to do is enough to enliven theirspirits: Were here for so many hours,we run out of things to do. This gives ussomething to do.

Nail-pierced handsThrough a freak accident and a chanceencounter, a young man discovers his Saviour.

Images of the nails piercing his hands kept running through his mind. Why had I not been more careful? Now look at me. How did you end up here, young man? avoice interrupts his thoughts. He looks overand lying beside him in a hospital bed is anelderly, frail-looking man. Tom, feeling sorry

for the man, quickly answers I didnt see thetoolbox in front of me. Tripped over it andbefore I could save myself, my hands werenailed to a piece of wood.

Well I once knew a man who was nailed byhis hands and feet to the cross

    45 years earlier

Joseph pushed his waythrough a screamingcrowd. He looked overthe shoulder of theman standing in front ofhim and there He was. The man he oncefollowed, the man who performed countlessmiracles, even healing the blind and raisinga dead man to life - and He was about to behung on the cross.

It was the ninth hour. The sun was nowhidden and Joseph watched as the soldiers

carried Him towards the tall, wooden cross. The crowdbecame more violent as rocksand scraps from the ground werehurled at Him. Angry cheers grewlouder and stronger as the soldiers nailedHis hands and feet to the cross.

Joseph looked on with great sadness asJesus called out with a loud voice, Father, into your hands I commit my spirit. WhenHe had said this, He bowed His head andbreathed His last.

At that very moment the earth shook and therocks split, and rain from the heavens came

    gushing down.

A soldier who stood before thecruci ed Christ heard His cry, sawhow He died and said, Surely thisman was the Son of God!

    The next day

Joseph entered the palace grounds andstood boldly before Pilate, ignoring theguards who surrounded him.

Sir, I have come here to request that I mayhave Jesus body, Joseph asked.

Pilatechuckled,And whywould you want adead mans body? Thesoldiers smirked and laughedat him. But Josephs feet hadresolved not to move one step until hewas given the body of his Lord.

Give this man the body, Pilate orderedhis guards as his eyes remained xed onJosephs unrelenting stare.

Joseph travelled into town and bought somene linen, herbs and spices, and fragrancefor Jesus burial. At the place where Jesuswas cruci ed, there was a garden, and in the

garden a new tomb, in which no one had

    Jewish Dayof Preparation

and since the tombwas nearby, he laid

Jesus there. Josephwrapped His body with

the myrrh and aloe spices,in strips of linen.

Joseph searched and found a largestone. Sweat dripped down his foreheadas the sun rested on him. He rolled thestone against the entrance of the tomband when he did, the light was gone and

    darkness lled the tomb.

    The hospital

The rain starts pounding heavily againstthe roof. Tom looks at the old man layingthere peacefully; staring at the window, watching the rain wash the windows

clean. He leans over the bedside rail toget a closer look at the name on the oldmans identi cation wristband. Joseph .Tom gathers his thoughts for a momentand just as he turns his head to listenagain to what the old man is saying, hehears footsteps approaching him.

The nurse rushes in and pulls the curtainbetween Tom and the old man. Tomdesperately strains himself to listen to theold mans fading voice behind the curtain,

The tomb was empty, He has risen He is alive!

The old man breathes his last.

Laying there, Tom looks at his own nail-scarred hands and begins to realiseGods love and His willing, perfectsacri ce for sin. With both hands clasped

rmly together and ignoring the pain, Tombows his head and closes his eyes. Dear Heavenly Father,Forgive me for I have sinned. Today, I receive you as my Personal Lord and Saviour. I desire to walk with you and follow your ways. Teach me and allow me to share your good news to others also.I thank you. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
