Six Plates Hosting HNH Benefit
The Durham wine bar Six Plates is hosting Txakolifest, acelebration of wine, live music, and food from seven areachefs on June 1. The event will serve as a fundraiser for
Housing for New Hope from 1-4pm and feature thefollowing chefs: Six Plates John Eisensmith, Billy Cotter ofToast, Charlie Deal of Dos Perros, Tim Lyons of Blu Seafood
and Bar, Matt Kelly of Mateo, Chris Stinnett of PopsRestaurant, Amy Tornquist of Watts Grocery, and ToddWhitney of Vin Rouge. All proceeds go to Housing for NewHope! Tickets are $75 and include food, wine tastings, andentertainment. There are only 150 tickets, so purchase them
in advance at Six Plates and Wine Authorities on UniversityDrive. Later in the evening between 4pm-12am, Six Plateswill offer $15 admission to enjoy the live music, though foodand drink will not be included, and proceeds from theevening admission are not included in the fundraiser. So getto Six Plates early on June 1 to enjoy all Txakolifest has tooffer while supporting Housing for New Hope!

Rapid Rehousing is Off to a Great Start
Housing for New Hope is helping families in transitionto secure permanent housing through RapidRehousing. We are committed to move 80 households 45 families and 35 individuals from homelessnessinto their own homes in 2013. You can help make adifference in the lives of families moving fromhomelessness into their new home! Your company,congregation, or organization can sponsor a family,hold a donation drive for furniture or householdsupplies, or help families move.

Health Summit
Housing for New Hope participated in the 12th annualDurham Health Summit, held on March 22, 2013. Themeeting is held each year to discuss issues surrounding the
health of Durham residents. Housing for New Hopepresented on homelessness and healthcare, and ExecutiveDirector Terry Allebaugh spoke about the homelesshealthcare crisis. Due to multiple barriers, many homelesspeople are unable to navigate the healthcare system and
the result is a life expectancy 10 years less than the generalpopulation. Thanks to a capacity-building grant fromBlueCross BlueShield of NC, Housing for New Hope isworking to establish models to help navigate healthcare
needs of the homeless and work towards building solutionsso no one is released into homelessness from a hospital. If

Point in Time Count ResultsThe annual Point in Time Count survey of homelessness inDurham was held January 30. Housing for New Hope staff
joined with volunteers and other agencies to survey the city
of Durham for the number of unsheltered individuals. Thecount indicated a rise in the total number of people
experiencing homelessness at 759, up from 698 in 2012.However, the number of people without any shelter droppedfrom 63 to 53 and the number of chronically homeless was
the lowest since 2005 at 87 individuals. This compares to134 chronically homeless counted in 2012.

Sign up a Team for Creative Food Drive
Last fall, Housing for New Hope was a beneficiary ofthe Durham event Creative Food Drive, hosted byMHAworks, where teams competed to build sculptures
out of nonperishable food items. The event was ahuge success, raising over 12,000 pounds of food forHousing for New Hope and the Food Bank, and is
planned to be even bigger in 2013!
The 3rd AnnualCreative Food Drivewill be held onSaturday, October
19 at the AmericanTobacco Campus.Now is the time toconsider signing up

HOW YOU CAN HELP
Volunteers Needed to Lead Workshops for Tenants
Everyone is good at something! Do you have a hobby, skill, or area ofexpertise to share with our tenants? Housing for New Hope is looking for
volunteers to lead one-time or monthly workshops with tenants of ourtransitional and permanent supportive housing locations on a wide rangeof topics. Sessions can be on subjects such as health, nutrition, adultreading/writing, finance, technology, music, art, or interview prep.Consider asking a friend to join and team-teach a lesson. Workshops will
take place on weekday evenings for one hour each. If you have an ideafor a session topic or want to volunteer, [email protected]

The Durham architecture and design firm MHAworks holdsthe annual Creative Food Drive as a benefit to Housing forNew Hope, The Food Bank, and the Durham community.In recognition of their efforts, MHAworks recently receivedthe Governors Key Volunteer of the Year award from the
Volunteer Center of Durham.

The Honorable Mike Woodard presented MHAworks withthe 2013 Governor's Award for Volunteer Service ofDurham County in the Corporate/Business category fortheir creation, organization, and work on Creative FoodDrive. The Governor's Award program has honored thetrue spirit of volunteerism in our state by recognizingindividuals and businesses that make a significant
contribution to our community through volunteer service.
Housing for New Hope nominated MHAworks for theGroup/Team category and the Corporate/Businesscategory.We are humbled and honored to be recognized

Assist Housing for New Hope staff with planning specialevents and fundraisers.
Resident MentorAssist formerly homeless individuals with life skills andprofessional development. Assist with resumes and job
interview preparation, and being a caring source ofsupport for residents.
IT CoordinatorHelp the Housing for New Hope Administrative Teamwith technology on an as-needed basis.
Supporting Professional CapacityProvide professional expertise in research, marketing,communications, or other infrastructure-related mattersfor the organization through committee participation oron an ad hoc basis.
Property and Facility MaintenanceAssist with painting, washing vehicles, or organizing
storage facility. (2-5 hours per job)

Mill Place, located at 1904 Cole Mill Road in Durham. Thebuilding is brand new and the 600 sq. ft. windowed and fullyaccessible office includes:
