The notion of linking short stories through character and setting to create a

larger work is nothing new. (Ask Chaucer.) But this form has enjoyed unusual

prominence in recent years, both in fiction (including Olive Kitteridge and A

Visit from the Goon Squad, winners of the 2009 and 2011 Pulitzer Prize, respectively)

and in film (Short Cuts, Pulp Fiction, Magnolia and Crash, among others). In my

reading and viewing, however, I haven’t felt that linked stories have been explored

as deeply as they might be in theatre, particularly in the way characters’ paths may

unexpectedly cross, or out-of-sequence events may generate insights and ironies, as

they do in several of the works listed above.

And so a few years ago I began weaving together some of my ten-minute plays in an

effort to discover potential connections between their characters and stories, their

hidden relationships and common themes. I initially thought I could simply “recycle”

many of these short plays into a longer work, but it gradually became apparent that

the deeper satisfactions of dramatic narrative emerged only when the individual

pieces felt integrally (rather than tangentially) related. Consequently, all but one

of these earlier plays have been replaced by new ones, and the one holdover has

undergone significant revision in order to improve the weave of the whole.

When my friend, director/adaptor Aaron Posner, asked me what unifies the nine

stories in Hope and Gravity, I answered, “All of the characters suffer.” He responded

by quoting the opening line of W.H. Auden’s Musée des Beaux Arts (a work I love,

and which is now referenced obliquely in the play): “About suffering they were never

wrong, / the Old Masters…” Auden’s poem alludes to various paintings by Pieter

Breughel the Elder, including “Fall of Icarus” and “The Census at Bethlehem.” On

re-reading the poem, and revisiting the paintings, I realized that three of the play’s

central ideas are encapsulated here: the notion of simultaneous action unaware of

itself; the notion that the tragic occurs within a tiny corner of the mundane; and the

notion that, as in the Icarus myth, hope must eventually, inevitably, come to terms

with gravity.

I hope you enjoy the ride.

About suffering they were never wrong,The Old Masters: how well they understoodIts human position; how it takes placeWhile someone else is eating or opening a window or just walking dully along; How, when the aged are reverently, passionately waitingFor the miraculous birth, there always must beChildren who did not specially want it to happen, skating On a pond at the edge of the wood:They never forgotThat even the dreadful martyrdom must run its courseAnyhow in a corner, some untidy spotWhere the dogs go on with their doggy life and the torturer’s horse Scratches its innocent behind on a tree.

In Brueghel’s Icarus, for instance: how everything turns awayQuite leisurely from the disaster; the plowman mayHave heard the splash, the forsaken cry,But for him it was not an important failure; the sun shoneAs it had to on the white legs disappearing into the greenWater; and the expensive delicate ship that must have seenSomething amazing, a boy falling out of the sky,Had somewhere to get to and sailed calmly on.

-- W. H. Auden, Musée des Beaux Arts

What connection can there have been between many people in the innumerable histories of this world, who, from opposite sides of great gulfs, have nevertheless been very curiously brought together?
