With only a few games of the regular fixture rounds to go, we’re now getting down to the business end of the 2014 netball season. It has been a long season (since our first committee meeting on 23 January, prior to the start of the school year) but my heartfelt thanks go to all players, coaches, umpires, committee members and general volunteers that have made this another successful year for RGS Netball. Best of luck to all teams as you head into the finals and grand finals over the next period – do your best and make us all proud ! Our First VII Magic will represent the Capricornia Region in the Vicki Wilson Cup finals to be played in Brisbane in early October. So, there’s still a bit of netball yet to flow under the hoop before this year is done ! Date Claimer: This year’s RGS Netball Presentation night is scheduled for the last week of the term, Thursday 18 September. Further details will be provided in the coming weeks, including invitations to all players and parents to attend and celebrate our collective successes and triumphs this year. Coaches are currently finalising team photos and action shots for inclusion in the photo gallery and final nominations and assessments for the various team and age group awards is also well underway. I know that all of our teams are also well advanced (or at least have started thinking creatively) on the big award of the night - the table centre piece. If anyone would like to volunteer to assist the committee on the night (we generally need BBQ cooks, drink servers, food servers etc), please contact our Teacher-In-Charge, Dorothy Skilling, prior to the Presentation Night. Thank you again – I look forward to catching up with as many of you as possible at Presentation Night. QISSN Champions - 2014

From the Captain - Mikeeley Hoch:One of our goals for Magic this year was to not only make the grand final at QISSN as we did last year, but take it out and bring home the trophy. Coming off the back of winning the School girls competition we had gathered some confidence, but knew that we had to stay focused and take each game as it came. Little did we know that by Firday of QISSN we would be playing our hometown rivals, Emmaus College. The first game against St Michael’s College brought with it both excitement and nerves and this clearly showed in our first half as we struggled to maintain the lead. After a few settling words from coach, Ang Horn at half time, calm was restored and we then went on to win not only this game but the following 6 round games over Monday and Tuesday.

The RGS Magic Open Firsts netball team was crowned QISSN (Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Netball) champions for 2014 after a 58-48 win over Emmaus College in the grand final. RGS centre Mikeeley Hoch was named player of the grand final and RGS player of the carnival. Mikeeley and goal shooter Marissa Buchanan were also named in the QISSN merit team.It was a tough final hurdle for RGS who led by 2 goals at quarter time before extending that lead in the second quar-ter and led by 11 goals at three-quarter time. Emmaus battled their way back into the game early in the final quarter to trail by just five goals before RGS made their winning run.

RGS coach Angela Horn said her team was focused for the entire week of QISSN.“I was really proud of how mature they were and they maintained their focus. It was a whole team effort,’’ Angela said.“We had two main goals for this year - to win schoolgirls, which we achieved, and QISSN. To get through QISSN undefeated is something the School has never done before.’’With these two goals achieved Magic will now turn their attention to the Vicki Wilson Cup statewide competition.Magic have already won the Central Queensland round with wins over Emmaus, Chanel College, Biloela State High School and Tannum Sands State High School.

Suns shine on the coastOn the weekend August 23-24 the RGS Super Suns played in the Capricorn Coast Netball Association’s Cap Coast Junior Cup. The team was pumped, after their win over Frenchville in the Primary School netball Grand Final, and were looking forward to spending the weekend bonding and another opportunity to play great netball. The games were tough down on the grass, with the opposition from all over Central Queensland, a total mystery. But with plenty of enthusiasm, team spirit and skill, the girls were undefeated over 7 games and winning the 12 and under Cap Coast Cup for 2014. Congratulations girls! On a personal note, I’d like to thank each of the girls and their parents, with a special thank you to both the Goudie and Kingston families for their generous hospitality. Thank you for a memorable weekend!
