Last night, a very special group of young people were honoured at SickKids Foundation’s annual DonorHall event. Donor Hall, hosted this year by TVO’s Steve Paikin and featuring special guest speaker 3­time Olympic Gold Medalist Jennifer Botterill, celebrates the tremendous support SickKids receives andhonours those who share SickKids vision and commitment to improving the future of child health. 

Four awards were presented by the Kids Believe in SickKids program: Top Fundraising Group, TopFundraising Individual, Top Tribute Award and the Spirit Award. The recipients of these awards are someof our youngest heroes who embody the spirit of giving and have stood up and supported SickKids byplanning and fundraising through an event of their own.

Since its inception in 2005, the Kids Believe in SickKids program has raised more than $3 million insupport of children’s health. Funds raised are designated to the highest priority needs established by thehospital each year.

2014 Kids Believe in SickKids Award WinnersSpirit Award: Kayla Baker (Run aLung) 

Kayla Baker had been a SickKids patient all her life. At just two­years­old, she was diagnosed withundifferentiated sarcoma, a rare form of childhood cancer, in the left side of her chest. She underwentextensive chemotherapy and a gruelling 12­hour surgery to remove the tumour which had wrappedaround her diaphragm, her heart and other vital organs.  Several years later, Kayla was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis, a result of the chemotherapy shereceived as a toddler. With her respiratory system functioning at just 50 per cent, Kayla needed newlungs.  

Kayla received a single lung transplant (her right lung could not be transplanted). Unfortunately, Kaylaexperienced numerous post­operative complications and subsequently developed post­transplantlymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD), a type of cancer that transplant recipients sometimes develop.  

On New Year’s Day 2014, Kayla passed away at SickKids. 

Kayla had a dream. She dreamt that no child would ever have to wait for new lungs, or a new heart, or anew liver. In May 2013, she founded Run aLung, a five kilometre walk/run event to raise awareness ofthe importance of organ donation. The inaugural run took place on May 11 at the Bob McMullen LinearTrail in her hometown of Cambridge.  

Kayla’s family and friends will continue to help make her dream come true this year with the secondannual Run aLung event on Saturday, May 31. The funds raised this year will support the SickKidsIntensive Care Unit, Kayla’s home away from home. Last year’s event proceeds supported the purchaseof new rehabilitation equipment for the hospital. 

Top Fundraising Individual Award: Zachary Winkler (Do Something Sweet )

Zachary Winkler is not your average 13­year­old. He likes playing video games and he LOVES theToronto Maple Leafs, but Zachary does something a bit different in his spare time. He raises money, ALOT of money. 

He is the founder of Do Something Sweet, a fundraising initiative that has raised more than $37,000 tosupport SickKids. 

After learning that his younger sister Maya had spent time at SickKids as an infant, Zachary feltcompelled to help children just like her.

Hosted on his parent’s driveway, Do Something Sweet raises money by distributing candy floss inexchange for donations. The fun­filled day also features exciting activities including inflatable games,balloon animals, face painting and a silent auction.  

This budding humanitarian was the recipient of the Junior Citizen of the Year award in 2009, presentedto him by the Premier of Ontario and the Lieutenant Governor. 

Top Tribute Award: Carlie and Corrie Campol, Aly Silverberg and Sammi Fleming (Jake’sCollection Fund) 

When 14­year­old Carlie and 11­year­old Corrie Campols’ cousin, Jake Wagman, age 10, wasdiagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare cancerous tumour, at SickKids in 2011, they didn’t waste anytime looking for ways to support him. 

With the help of Carlie’s two best friends, Aly Silverberg and Sammi Fleming, Carlie developed a websitecalled Jake’s Collection Fund aimed at generating donations that would help Jake and other kids just likehim fight the fight of their lives.  

Since its inception, Jake’s Collection Fund has served as the umbrella organization for a number ofdifferent fundraising events and initiatives to raise awareness of Ewing’s sarcoma and generate supportfor research at SickKids. To date, these four girls and their supporters have raised more than $59,000 forSickKids.  

Top Fundraising Group Award: The Canadian Tamil Academy 

Earlier this year, The Canadian Tamil Academy in Scarborough hosted the first annual Pillaith Thamilgala in support of SickKids. Teachers and students showcased their creative talent during a specialevening to which they invited members of the community. Donations for SickKids were generatedthrough pledge forms and ticket sales. The event ultimately raised more than $10,000 for the hospital.
