New Student Orientation
UMW Honors Program – University Honors
• University-wide program
• Mission - enhance students’ intellectual growth by
engaging them in rigorous interdisciplinary
seminars, strong internship experiences, extendedresearch and creative projects, and community
service that enhances their development as
leaders. The program will seek students whose
performance and intellectual abilitiesdemonstrate that they have the range of talents
and skills to thrive in diverse communities.

Types of Honors Recognized at Graduation
• University Honors – fulfill requirements of the
Honors program
• Departmental Honors – fulfill departmental
requirements for a project or theses – individuals who show excellence in their field of
study
• Latin Honors/Academic Distinction - Cum Laude
(3.25-3.49 cumulative GPA), Magna Cum Laude(3.50-3.74 GPA), and Summa Cum Laude (3.75-
4.00 GPA)
• Honor Societies - Phi Beta Kappa, Mortar Board

Successfully complete a minimum of 6 Honors credits per year
until all requirements are fulfilled:
• Honors First Year Seminar – HONR 100, HIST201(HN),
HIST202(HN), or FSEM100(HN)
• Five additional HN designated courses
• Mentored Service Learning Project – HONR 201
• Project/Research Design Seminar
• Leadership requirement
•
Mentor First Year Honors students• Capstone Honors Course OR Honors Project (Thesis
or Performance) in a discipline or an Interdisciplinary
Project (minimum 3 credits)

Other Honors Program Requirements
• Maintain a 3.2 overall UMW GPA – see
policy in handbook – checked each
semester
• Participate in a minimum of one Honors
co-curricular event per semester (a
minimum of 8 events prior to graduation)
• Complete a portfolio of honors programwork and activities
• Attend meetings of the honors program

Honors Program Benefits• guaranteed minimum $1,000 for
undergraduate research
• preferential registration forcourses, including non-honors
courses
• duPont 210 student lounge
• Note - No preferential housing

Size and Selection Criteria• 50-75 students per graduating class
• If not offered admission, students
with at least a 3.2 UMW GPA canapply for the spring semester –
should take a honors first year
seminar or HN designated course toprepare you for the program in fall
2014

Honors Service Learning HONR201• Mentored service learning project with local
agencies
•
Work with faculty mentor• Minimum 20 hours community service
• Communicate progress to faculty mentor
• Attend reflection sessions – one a third of
the way into the project and one 2/3rds of
the way through
• Submit final reflection paper

Research Methodology Course
• List of approved courses posted on Canvas
workspace and website
• examine various methodologies for conducting
research• critique and synthesize scholarly literature
• analyze the elements of an effective problem thesis
• examine methods of collecting, analyzing and
organizing data• articulate a quality research proposal

Honors Program Leadership
• examples of these activities would include (but not
exclusively)
• assist admissions to recruit potential honors
students serve in a leadership role for a universitygroup or club
• serve as a coordinator of service learning reflection
sessions or as a coordinator for service learning
projects (must have completed HONR201 prior toserving in this role)

Honors Program Mentoring
• Provide mentoring relationships between new
honors students and upperclassmen. Ideally
students from similar academic backgrounds or
extracurricular interests would be matched
together.
• Contribute to developing a sense of community
within the honors program and to provide a means
for information transfer.
• Promote involvement in the UMW community and
in the UMW honors program.
