andamasterinpublicadministrationfromKutztownUniversity,butismost
proudof thedegreeheobtainedasanundergraduateaccountingstudent
righthereatAlvernia,in1986.
Asthe2009recipientof the“ChristianR.&MaryF.LindbackFoundation
Award forExcellence inTeaching,”Ballantyne exemplifies outstanding
classroomperformance,instructionalsupport,andcampusleadership—as
wellasthehighesttraditionsof theteachingprofessionatAlverniaUniversity.
Ballantyne’steachingexcellencewasalsorecognizedin2009bythebusiness
department’s accrediting agency (theAssociation of CollegiateBusiness
SchoolsandPrograms),whichawardedhimtheTeachingExcellenceAward
forRegionTwo(includingPennsylvania,Delaware,theDistrictof Columbia,
Maryland,Virginia,andWestVirginia).
As aTenuredAssociate Professor atAlvernia,Ballantyne has served as theMBACoordinator,ASBSP InitialAccreditation
Coordinator, andDepartmentChair.He regularlywrites articles appearing in peer-reviewed journals, presents at national and
internationalconferences,anddirectsstudentresearchanddissertationprojects.Heiscurrentlyintheprocessof co-authoringa
bookonorganizationplanningwithfellowbusinessdepartmentfacultymembersBethBerretandMaryEllenWells.
Licensedasaninsuranceagent,BallantynealsoholdsregistrationsasaPennsylvaniaRegisteredSchoolBusinessAdministrator,and
isaregisteredrepresentativeinthefinancialsecuritiesindustry.
Onthefunside,Ballantyneisalicensedprivatepilot,alicensedboatcaptain,ascubadiver,afisherman,andamotorcycleenthusiast.
BallantynecontinuestobeactivelyinvolvedinthecommunitybyutilizingcommunityresearchprojectsintheAlverniaMBAcapstone
classtobuildcomprehensiveplansfororganizationsthatimproveourcommunity.Hecarefullychoosesorganizationsthatneed
businessadvice,butmaynotbeabletoaffordcomprehensiveplanningservices.
Heisamemberof thePennsylvaniaAssociationof SchoolBusinessOfficials,EasternEducationalResearchAssociation,Institute
of ManagementAccountants,andtheAssociationof CollegiateBusinessSchoolsandPrograms.
HeatherSpangler
Heather SpanglergrewupinGloucesterCity,N.J.,andattendedGloucester
CatholicHighSchool,whereshedevelopedan interest in thesciences—
particularlybiology,anatomy,andphysiology.Wishingto incorporateher
compassionforotherswithhernewfoundinterestinthesciences,shechose
topursueacareerinnursing.
AftergraduatingwithhonorsfromGloucesterCatholicin2006,shedecided
toattendAlvernia,andwas invitedtobecomeamemberof theHonors
Programoncampus.Asanhonorsstudent,Heatherhastakenmanyhonors
courses,includingHonorsHistoryandMusic,andSocialWork.Heather
alsoconductedresearchforherhonorsthesis,examiningtheeffectsof a
structured exercise program in a psychosocial rehabilitation setting that
providesservicesandsupportforthoselivingwithmentalillnesses.Heather’s
honors thesis reflects the concept developing and using evidence-based
practice techniques to improve the lives of patients. Shehopes that her
findingsareabletobenefitamarginalizedpopulation.
Heatherhasbeenactiveoncampusandinprofessionalorganizations.SheisatutorinAlvernia’sLearningCenterhelpingstudents
withsubjectssuchasanatomyandphysiology,biology,andfundamentalsof nursing.Sheisastudentambassador,oftenbeingone
of thefirstfacesprospectiveandnewstudentsseeoncampus.ShealsorepresentsAlverniaasastudentambassadortomembers
of thesurroundingcommunityatuniversity-sponsoredevents.Asamemberof theAlverniaStudentNursesAssociation(ASNA)
andthePennsylvaniaStudentNursesassociation(PSNA),Heatherhasparticipatedinbothstateandnationalconferences.Shehas
alsobeenactiveinserviceprojectsinReading,NewOrleans,La.,andtheDominicanRepublic.
In2009,HeatherworkedinanurseexternshipintheoperatingroomatCooperUniversityHospitalinCamden,N.J.,whereshe
gainedamorein-depthknowledgeof anatomicalbodysystemsanddiseaseprocessesthrougha“hands-on”approachintheseveral
areas,includingorthopedic,vascular,OB-GYN,urologic,cardiac,neurologicalsurgeries,andpostanesthesiacare.Thisyear,shewas
inductedintoDeltaEpsilonSigma,theNationalHonorSocietyof CatholicCollegesandUniversities,aswellasSigmaThetaTau,
theInternationalHonorSocietyforNursing.ShewasalsonominatedasAlverniaUniversity’sSeniorScholar.
Aftergraduation,Heatherhopestopursueacareerinpreoperativenursing,andisalsointerestedinpsychiatricnursing.
University Awards
OutstandingScholarAthleteTwostudentathletes,onemaleandonefemale,arerecognizedannuallyformaintainingthehighestGPAafterfouryearsasan
Alverniaathlete.
TheFranciscanPeaceandJusticeAwardTheFranciscanPeaceandJusticeAwardisgiventoagraduatingseniorwhodemonstratesaspiritof serviceandleadershipin
academicandco-curricularactivities,promotesdiversityandrespectforallpeople,isdedicatedtoserviceinthecommunity,espe-
ciallywiththepoorandmarginalized,andisactivelycommittedtobuildingaglobalcommunityaroundsocialjusticeandpeace.
SeniorScholarTheSeniorScholarAwardisa$10,000scholarshiptowardAlverniasenioryeartuitionpresentedtoonestudent.Therecipient
mustmaintaina3.7GPA,submitaletterdescribingtheirgoals,aresume,areferenceletterfromafacultynumber,andareference
letterfromapeer.FinalistsareinterviewedbythefacultyHonorsandAwardsCommitteeandtheAcademicStandardsCommit-
teetodeterminetherecipient.
SaintBernardineFacultyAwardTheSaintBernardineFacultyAwardforExcellenceinPart-TimeTeachingisanawardpresentedtoanadjunctinstructor.
SisterMaryDonatillaFacultyAwardTheSisterMaryDonatillaLegacyAwardisanawardtoafulltimefacultymemberwhohasgivenlongservicetotheUniversity
inteaching,advising,service,andsupport.TheHonorsandAwardsCommitteeselectstherecipient.
TheAlverniaUniversityHonorsProgramTheHonorsProgramisdesignedtorecognizeandencourageacademicexcellence.Theprogramoffersavarietyof challenging
interdisciplinarycoursesandprovidesanacademicclimatetopromotelearning.Graduationfromtheprogramiscontingentupon
thecompletionof designatedhonorscoursework,aminimumgradepointaverage,andthecompletionandpresentationof a
seniorthesisorproject.
