THE YMCA OF GREATER BERGEN COUNTYWelcome. When you join the Y, you’re coming together with men, women and children from your community who are committed to youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Y of-fers programs, services and initiatives that focus on these three areas, accord-ing to the unique needs of the communi-ties we engage.

We know firsthand how difficult it can be to find balance in life. That’s why we’re here with you every day, making sure that

you, your family and your community have the resources and support needed to learn, grow and thrive.

We do that by encouraging good health and fostering connections with new and old friends through sports, fun and shared interests.

The YMCA of Greater Bergen County was founded in the 1890s in Hackensack. The present building was erected in 1926-27 as a “Y for All” – men, women, boys and girls.

Currently, thousands of children are en-rolled in the various youth development programs: Childcare Center, After School Program, Summer Camp, Swimming, Sports, Dance and Art Programs. Teens participate in wellness classes and the Teen Leaders Club. Adults and seniors continue a healthy lifestyle through well-ness classes and use of the Y’s Geraldine Lees Wellness Center.

The Y, a nonprofit organization, welcomes your participation and support.

GREETINGS FROM THE YMCAWelcome and Good Evening,

It is with great pleasure that I greet all assembled here tonight in celebration of the YMCA of Greater Bergen County’s 49th Annual Sports Award Banquet.

The Y is a powerful association of men, women and children joined together by a shared commitment to nurturing the potential of kids, promoting healthy living and fostering a sense of social responsibility. We believe that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we all work together to invest in kids, our health and our neighbors. That’s why strengthening community is our cause. Every day, we work side by side with our neighbors in our communities to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.

Congratulations to tonight’s honorees and thank you for all that you do in your schools and communities. We recognize each of you for your personal and ath-letic achievements, and for instilling in each other a collective sense of what is right and what is good. These are values that you have learned while competing in sports, and values by which you have chosen to live.

Thank you to the members of the Sports Award Committee for their hard work and dedication in putting this event together. It is truly one of Bergen County’s premier events.

Finally, I would like to thank all the businesses, corporations and organizations participating in this year’s banquet that provided financial support for Y pro-grams that serve the greater Bergen County community.

Again, congratulations to all here tonight and best wishes for continued success.

Bob dedicated his life to the high school athletic community in Emerson, serving 30 years as the high school’s athletic director and acting as a leader in local, county and state sports. Bob launched his career at Emerson as a biology and AP biology teacher. He taught until 1985 when he switched gears and became the athletic director and disciplinarian. Bob is one of Bergen County’s most successful baseball coaches, winning three state championships, seven state sectional championships and 14 league championships. He has a win/loss record of 526-227. His varsity baseball team won back to back championships in 2001 and 2002. His many awards and accomplishments include 2011 NJ State Baseball Coaches Association Man of the Year, three-time Bergen County Coach of the Year for baseball (1992, 2001, 2007), Baldwin Hunt Service Award to Bergen County Baseball, YMCA Nick Saingas Award in 2002, chairman of Bergen County Baseball for 29 years, BCSL/NJIC Baseball Coach of the Year 12 times, Ath-letic Director of the Year in Bergen County 2010, NJSCA Hall of Fame 2008, IAABO Basketball Official for 35 years, officiated two NJ Tournament of Champions for basketball and officiated the BCWCA basketball final. During Bob’s last game at Emerson, his wife, Judy, invited some former players from various decades to support him. “It’s all about the relationships,” said Bob, “not always about the wins and losses.” Bob has three children, Michele, Robert and Michael, and two step-children, Kelly and Tracy. SPORTS AWARD BANQUET HONOREESJAMES KELLYRichard Poor Service to the Community

An avid supporter of the American Special Children’s Pilgrimage Group (ASCPG), James Kelly, has given his free time to help young people with special physical and developmental needs.

The ASCPG is a non-profit organization that unites children and young adults with special physical or emotional needs with volunteer caregivers for an unforget-table week in Lourdes. The week is packed with social and spiritual activities for over 5,000 people from Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales, the West Indies, Croa-tia, Romania and the United States. The special needs pilgrims travel without their parents; instead, caring volunteers from all walks of life – doctors, nurses, priests, professionals, retirees, teachers, carpen-ters, students – travel with and care for them in a family-type atmosphere. The volunteers pay their own way and work tirelessly to raise the funds for every special pilgrim to experience Lourdes.

Since the inception of ASCPG, approxi-mately 200 young people from the tri-state area have traveled to Lourdes. The organization is funded solely on private and corporate donations and is 100% volunteer driven. Although the pilgrim-age began with European children, in the 1990s, the ASCPG was formed by Jerry Flood, to include pilgrims from the United States as well. A long-time friend of Jerry’s, James decided that it was time to make the trip. It has now become an annual commitment. James works each year to raise funds through friends, family and local businesses and organizations to support the pilgrimage.

James is currently the Mayor of Dumont, the town where he grew up and later decided to raise his family. He has been a

member of the St. John’s Knights of Co-lumbus for over 40 years, an organization which has donated thousands of dollars to the needy, in particular to help children with mental handicaps. James also has a younger brother who has Down Syndrome. Professionally, James is the Human Re-source Administrator/Assistant Comptrol-ler at Steri-Pharma, LLC.

NICHOLAS LEOMATTHEW LEOInspirational Youth Award

Diagnosed at a very young age with Ataxia-Telangiestsia, Nicholas and Mat-thew Leo have never let their disorder hold them back. Born seventeen months apart, the boys were always encouraged by their parents to be active and they took that advice to heart.

Nick began bowling at eight years old with the aid of a ramp. He used physics to help him hook and curve the ball. A student at Northern Valley Regional High School Demarest, Nick now competes for the Norseman Bowling Team and junior leagues throughout the state. He has earned two varsity letters and is poised to receive his third in the fall. Off the lanes, Nick has been an honor roll student and served as the public relations officer for Hand-in-Hand, a teen peer group that facilitates socialization among children with special needs.

Matthew, also a student at Northern Val-ley Regional High School Demarest, has

been playing baseball since the first grade. Passionate about the sport, he has been able to bat with assistance from his fa-ther. He serves as the scorekeeper for the Norseman freshman baseball team. Like his brother, Matthew is a bowler too, and competes in junior tournaments through-out the state for the Norsemen Bowling Team, using a ramp and wheelchair. In 2013, the Closter Recreation Department created the Matthew Leo Leadership and Courage Award in his honor.

Matt and Nick were recently awarded the Bergen County 16th Annual Salute to Champions Award.

As the head football coach for Northern Highlands, Chris Locurto has led his team to many spectacular wins, but the most impressive was his battle against meningitis.

It began with an intense earache and then high fever followed by becoming delusional and disoriented. He spent the next month in and out of a coma. His wife was told to get her affairs in order. The doctors don’t know how, but he fought through it.

His coaching career at Northern High-lands Regional High School began in 2007, where he is currently a physi-cal education and health teacher. Prior to Northern Highlands he taught and coached at Spring Valley High School.

At Spring Valley his team won the State Section 7 title for the first time in the school’s history. While at North-ern Highlands he led the team to the playoffs for the first time in 13 years. The team went to the State Semi-Finals

the Year, her team was ranked #1 in the state for three consecutive years, her team was ranked #1 in the region for the same three consecutive years and in in 2011 (#4), 2012 (#5) and 2013 (#2) her team was ranked nationally. In 2013 the Northern Highland’s girls’ soccer program set a new, New Jersey State record for most consecutive wins with 65 from 2011 – 2013. The team has beat its own streak with a winning streak of 72 games.

Tara was selected to coach the EAST team at the first girls High School All-American game in December 2013. She has now be-come the permanent coach for that same team. Tara credits her players for many of her accomplishments. Tara’s coaching awards include: Bergen County Women’s Coaches Association Coach of the Year, North Jersey Coach of the Year, North 1 Region Coach of the Year by NJGSCA, New Jersey State Coach of the Year by NJGSCA, Regional Coach of the Year by NSCAA and Regional Coach of the Year by NFHS.

Her own accomplishments as a player are as impressive. Tara played varsity soccer, basketball and softball at River Dell high School. There she achieved all league, all county and all state for soccer, the lead-ing goal scorer in the county her fresh-man year. She was also all league and all county for softball where he team played in the state championship in 1994 and in the county championship in 1997.

Charles W. JohnsonThomas L. Della Torre Special Achievement

In 40 years of coaching, Chuck Johnson has only had four losing seasons. During that time he has established him-self as a leader among football coaches. One of his many accomplish-ments is that he is the only coach to beat three parochial schools in a five-year period.

Chuck began his career at Bogota High

School in 1974 where he was a physi-cal education teacher and an assistant and head football coach. He never had a losing season at Bogota.

In 1984, he moved to Ridgewood High School where he became a wellness teacher and the head football coach. He has also coached baseball and girls basketball. While at Ridgewood, his team won the Group IV Section One State Championships in 2003 and 2004. His teams have gone to the playoffs every year, except one, since 1998.

In addition to coaching, Chuck is fully committed to teaching. With the help of colleague Sheryl Soucy, he devel-oped an entirely new wellness-based curriculum for Ridgewood High School physical education students.

Chuck believes that his success in coaching and teaching is based on creating a “relaxed, comfortable work-ing relationship with each student and each athlete.” He creates a rapport to “promote engagement and per-formance of the learner/athlete.” He helps each player use their skills to their highest potential.

His awards include the Rutgers Cup Winner in 1986 for Outstanding Football Team in Northern New Jersey, John F. Bateman Award for Outstand-ing High School Football Coach in New Jersey by Rutgers Alumni in 2006, he was inducted into the New Jersey Scholastic Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2002 and the Lou Rettino Award for Outstanding Tri-State Area High School Coach of the Week by the New York Giants in 1998, 2004 and 2012.

His personal athletic career was also at Ridgewood High School where he played varsity baseball and football and was the captain of the football team in 1969. He then went on to Gettysburg College where he earned three varsity letters for football and four varsity letters for baseball. He was all the captain of the baseball

team in 1974. After college, Chuck played semi-pro baseball as a part of the Ridgewood Stan Musial Team and the Ridgewood Suburban League Team, where he won three state champion-ships.

STEVEN SCHAPIROCourageous Youth Award

Top Hockey De-fenseman for St. Joseph Regional High School, Ste-ven Shapiro would never have guessed that his hockey career and his life would be put on hold his senior year of high school.

Diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer, Steven was devastated. But instead of giving up, Steven decided to fight through his cancer and get his life back. A diagno-sis like this could certainly have meant the end of Steven’s hockey career. Instead, Steven used it as a motivator. In between treatments he would go to games and practices to be with his teammates.

After 3 cycles of chemo therapy in a four-month span, Steven was back on the ice where he should be. His first game back was a 6-1 win over Pascack Valley. According to his coach, “he hadn’t missed a beat.”

Steven Shapiro was voted assistant captain by his teammates prior to his diagnosis. He showed leadership and determination through his treatment and by getting back on the ice with his teammates.

During his hockey career, Steven played in back-to-back championships with the Kodiak Hockey Club (2007 – 2008, 2008 – 2009). He won the division championship in Delaware’s Flight on Ice Tournament in 2009-2010. In his two years playing at St. Joseph’s Regional, the team played in the league finals.

Steven is now playing Junior Hockey for the Avalanche organization.

KATHY GRAEFWalter E. Goepel Amateur Athlete Award

Kathy Graef spent her 32-year career teaching math at Northern Valley Re-gional High School where she also coached cross country track. Her personal athletic career began at a young age. In high school she was a 12 Varsity Letter winner as well as the Most Valuable Player in both basketball and softball. She was also All League and All County in both of those sports.

Always a competitive athlete, early in her career Kathy earned countless awards from local and NY City Road Runner Races. She placed in the top 3 in her age group in multiple half marathons and marathons, leading into triathlons and ultimately Ironman Lake Placid. Her love for competitive running spurred her career as a cross-country coach and allowed her to share her passion for the sport.

Some of her accomplishments include: four-time Ironman finisher, placing in the top 3-4 in her age group; 2:52 best marathon time; NYC Marathon finisher multiple times placing in the top 2-4 of her age group; winner of many local races and Olympic distance triathlons. She was also inducted into the Bergen County Women Coaches Association’s Hall of Fame.
