Message from the Vice-Chancellor & Principal
On behalf of the Community of the Vaal University of
Technology, I would like to salute and congratulate all
the graduands for achieving their hard-earned mile-
stone in their academic journey. It is time you can
proudly say to yourself: “I have made it, no matter how
challenging and tiring the journey was.”
In your success which lies ahead, never forget those who
sacrificed everything in their life to make it possible for
you. Most of all, never forget the source of your strength
and wisdom when thanking all the people that carried
you and made you who you are today. Give yourself
time to say: Thank you father God for being with me all
the way.
I believe you have the potential to be leaders in your
area of choice as you graduate today. I quote Leo
Buscaglia as he emphasizes the essence of ethics in
Leadership when he says:
• “You alone can bring magic – and humour, and
joy to the people you encounter;
• Anything you dream, by the very nature that
you can dream it, makes it possible;
• The purpose of life is to help others and if you
can’t help them, would you at least not hurt
them!
• You can make things happen that you never
thought you could!
• The greatest risk in life is to risk nothing. The per-
son who risks nothing, does nothing, has nothing
and is nothing;
• To be is to do – and to do is to do now because
tomorrow might not be there;
• You have everything you need to be so much …
don’t settle for less!
• There is no end to human potential – and there’s
so much more to learn;
• The time for action is now – and only you can
make the difference!”
The role of ethics in Service Excellence and in Corporate
Governance is well articulated and captured in an ar-
ticle by Professor Solly Banator which appeared in the
Cape Times of the 14 February 2006, in which he opined:
“Professionals play, an important role in society. Indeed,
society could not function effectively without trustworthy
professionals. This raises questions about the ethics of
how institutions operate and exert influence on those
who work within them. In the face of the powerful forc-
es eroding professionalism, there is a great need to pro-
mote core professional values”.
I would like to bring your attention to the “Good Ethical
Practice, Ethics stipulated in a Handbook for Faculty and
Staff at the University Illinois, 5th Edition” (p4), which de-
scribes the value of embracing ethics as follows:
“Apply ETHICS in every aspect of your life to attain the
RESPECT and TRUST of others. Keep in mind the VALUES
this institution represents, and act with INTEGRITY and
HONESTY at all times when representing the University of
Illinois. Together, we can achieve great RESULTS”
In conclusion, I wish to encourage all of you here today,
to think dearly about making a contribution that will im-
prove and develop your nation in whatever area of your
life, hence elevating and promoting the status of your
beloved country from one level to the next as follows:
From Good to Better
From Better to Great
From Great to Awesome
From Awesome to Auspicious
From Auspicious to Ostentatious
From Ostentatious to Fantastic
From Fantastic to Fabulous
From Fabulous to Remarkable
From Remarkable to Incredible
From Incredible to Magnificent
From Magnificent to Majestic
From Majestic to Splendid
From Splendid to Spectacular
From Spectacular to Revolutionary, and
From Revolutionary to Contentment.
This, will move our nation and the country from one Glory
to the next and in the process, there will be no losers but
only Winners!
Thank you!
Professor Gordon Ndodomzi Zide

Samkeliso Takaidza is a Research Technologist in the Department of Biotechnology at VUT. Sheobtained her first degree a BSc with Education in 2002 at Bindura University (Zimbabwe). In 2004 sheobtained an Honours in Microbiology at the University of Limpopo. In 2012 she completed an MTech inBiotechnology with VUT. She then enrolled for PhD in Biotechnology in 2015. In 2017 she was awardedwith a research training fellowship by NAM S & T Centre which enabled her to spend six months atSathyabama University, India. She has since published six articles in DHET accredited journals. She hasalso co-supervised one MTech to completion and has supervised several BTech students.Her research interest is in medicinal plants, cell culture and molecular work.
The genus has been used in traditional medicine to treat various ailments such as fever,earache, tuberculosis and esophageal cancer. However, there is limited scientific evidence tosupport its use. Therefore the objectives of this study were to perform phytochemical analysis,investigate the antioxidant, antimicrobial, anticancer, immunomodulatory activities and toxicity ofcrude acetone and water extracts from selected species. Standard methods were used forpreliminary phytochemical analysis. The antimicrobial activity was assessed by agar well diffusion,microtiter dilution and time kill assays. Morphological changes of the cancer cells (Hkesc-1 and KB)treated with extracts were examined using light and fluorescent microscopy. Flow cytometry analysiswas conducted to examine the cell cycle arrest. For immunomodulatory activity, the Greiss reagentand Luminex cytokine assays were used. The results from the study indicate that the extracts from theeight species examined contain phytochemicals that may have bioactivities. Extracts from
were observed to be the most potent. This study thus supports the use of intreating bacterial and fungal infections in traditional medicine. The results of this study also confirm theanticancer potential of . The immunomodulatory activity was observed to be dominantlypro-inflammatory activity. The toxicity of selected species was concentration, extract andtime dependent. Therefore, traditional medicine prepared from should be takenwith caution preferably in small doses over a short period of time. Future studies will focus on theidentification of the bioactive compound(s) responsible for the antimicrobial, anticancer andimmunomodulatory activities.

Kate Kotlhao comes from Kgagodi (central district) in Botswana. She holds a bachelor degree inScience Education (majoring in chemistry) which she completed in 1998. After two years she wasnominated for a Master's degree in Analytical Chemistry at the University of Botswana which shecompleted in 2006. She then went back to the class room to teach Chemistry at a Senior SecondarySchool. Two years later she was promoted to the post of a Senior lecturer at Molepolole College ofEducation, the place she is currently working at.Kate Kotlhao has written six published papers from her PhD work, which she started in 2016 at VUT. Shehas attended and participated in seven conferences, four of which were international conferencesheld in Gaborone, Botswana (2017), Singapore, Malaysia (2017), Stockholm, Sweden (2017) andMauritius (2018), Unisa, South Africa (2018). She was awarded 3 price and second best presenter forposter and oral presentations held in Randburg, South Africa (local conference) and Unisa, SouthAfrica (International Conference) respectively. Water quality from surface sources is fast deteriorating due to pollution from organic compounds.Among the organic compounds are chlorophenols, which are described as priority pollutantsbecause of their detrimental effects. One way of removing them from water is by using membranes.However direct removal of chlorophenols using membranes is limited due to the inherent problem ofmembrane fouling. The thesis describes fabrication of thin film composite membranes modified withAg-TiO and Ag-ZnO for enhancing filtration properties of the membranes for removal of 2-CP and 2,4-DCP and improving the antifouling properties of the modified membranes.Silver modified TiO and ZnO showed antibacterial activity against with minimum concentrationof inhibition as low as 1.56 mg/L for both Ag-ZnO (5) and Ag-TiO (5). Silver was more toxic against
than Ag-ZnO (5) and Ag-TiO (5). The presence of the NCs in the membranesimproved water flux, water permeation, rejection of 2- CP, and 2,4-DCP, antifouling properties of themembranes and flux recoveries of more than 93 % was achieved. Silver release test revealed that Ag-ZnO/PA-TFC membrane performed better than Ag-TiO /PA-TFC membrane because of the steadyrelease of silver, which shows long lasting antifouling properties. When applied to real water samplesfrom Vaal and Klip River, the prepared membranes showed better antifouling properties than the neatPA-TFC membrane.

She is also a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry aninternational organization aimed at the advancement of the chemical sciences.
Fresh water is a scarce natural resource accounting for only 2.5% of the world's total water. Theproblem of water contamination due to industrial activities is therefore a major concern. The studyfocused on the treatment of arsenic and chromium contaminated water because of the health risksthey pose including a risk to unborn children. Water treatment was carried out using locally availablepine cones modified with iron oxide particles incorporated with manganese to improve pollutantremoval through adsorption process. Incorporation of iron oxide improved the removal efficiency ofpine cone for arsenic and chromium by 90% and 40% respectively while the introduction ofmanganese to the composite material improved the removal efficiency of arsenic and chromium byapproximately 10% and 15% respectively. The mechanism of removal was studied and concluded tobe a chemical process through the exchange of surface bound ions with pollutant molecules. Theprepared materials were reusable up to 3 times. This research therefore provided a new cost-effectivematerial for the efficient removal of arsenic and chromium from water.

In the present era of water resources scarcity, efficient treatment of wastewater is a major prerequisiteespecially for growing economy. Numerous approaches have been studied for the development ofcheaper and more effective adsorbents for removal of both organic and inorganic pollutants fromwastewater. The present study harnessed the potential of biosorption and nanotechnology byproducing more efficient, selective, mechanically stable and effective adsorbents for removal Cr(VI),As(III) and 4-nitrophenol from aqueous solution. The magnetite coated pine cone was synthesized byco-precipitation method and cross-linked to cyclodextrin using hexamethylene diisocyanate andepichlorohydrin. The composites displayed high efficiency for Cr(VI), As(III) and 4-nitrophenol removal,can be easily separated from water by magnetic field and can be re-used for up to 3 times. Theprepared nanocomposites could thus, be applied as promising adsorbents for Cr(VI), As(III) and 4-nitrophenol removal from the polluted water.
