Dear Friends,

I am most grateful for your generosity this past fiscal year. As Excelsior’s president, I receive many communications each year from current and former students who are grateful for their experience with us. In many cases, your gifts have helped to transform their lives. You make it possible for Excelsior to provide a personalized education without the prospect of great financial debt. Your support creates educational opportunities that help our students to discover their potential and their place in the world.

Our student’s achievements would have been more difficult to accomplish without your support of the College and its mission. Together, we have been able to ensure success.

As of the fiscal year end on June 30, you have helped us set a new record in giving, with over a half million dollars in gifts. I cannot think of a more meaningful way to demonstrate your support for Excelsior and its life-changing work.

The expression “pay it forward” describes the impact of your giving and sets an example to current students. One day, we expect to see them help the next generation as you have helped them.

We are honored and grateful for your generosity, and ask that you join us in the year ahead with your continued support of our shared vision for Excelsior and its mission. There are exciting things in store as we move Ever Upward!

The Impact of Our Collective WorkFor the first time in the College’s 17 years of having an Annual Campaign, Excelsior raised more than a half-million dollars thanks to the generosity of alumni and friends, staff, faculty, and organizations. “The $507,800 in contributions represents a new high in our fundraising,” according to Cathy S. Kushner, Excelsior’s vice president for Institutional Advancement. “With 1,854 donors, our campaign will touch thousands of Excelsior’s students, helping them to earn degrees and move forward in their careers and communities.”

Our Local ImpactExcelsior’s commitment to provide financial support to students received a boost in April when the annual Partners in Lifelong Learning event raised a record-setting $102,417. The money raised will benefit hundreds of students living in New York state and surrounding areas. Deborah Onslow and the Times Union received Partners in Lifelong Learning Awards, recognizing their support of and alignment with Excelsior’s mission of extending education opportunities to adult learners. Over the past six years, the event has helped more than 400 students complete their degrees.

The Impact of Strong LeadershipLeadership giving at Excelsior hit an all-time high this past year. As is the norm, 100 percent of the members of College governance supported fundraising activities. The College’s trustees,

trustees emeriti, and former trustees collectively contributed more than $125,000. This increased amount represents 25 percent of contributions received. In addition to funding scholarships through the Annual Campaign, contributions were used to support a number of endowed funds and special programs, such as Excelsior’s Lt. Col. Bryant A. Murray Veterans Center, the Entrepreneur: Business & Technology Fund, and the Robert E. Kinsinger Institute for Nursing Excellence. “Establishing an endowment fund has been most rewarding to my wife and me,’ says retired Brig. Gen. Jerry L. Neff, the first Excelsior graduate to chair the College’s Board of Trustees. “There’s great satisfaction in knowing that for years to come, we will be supporting Excelsior and its students.”

Extending the Impact of OthersExcelsior’s Ever Upward Scholarship program allows Annual Campaign donors of $500 or more in a given fiscal year to name a one-time scholarship. The program, which this year will provide 19 scholarships, allows donors to honor or memorialize a person or people of importance to them. Nearly $10,000 will be distributed to students through this program in the coming months. Here are some examples of the support provided:

• The Amy McVay, LPN Memorial Ever Upward Scholarship, donated in Amy’s memory by her sister. Amy was an LPN just a few courses shy of earning her Bachelor of Science in nursing at the time of her death. The gift will help a student continue toward completion of his/her educational goals.

• The Commander Thomas P. Moninger Ever Upward Scholarship Award was established by alumnus Shannon McMillan to recognize his commanding officer who fully supports education and the betterment of his crew through education.

• The Nathaniel Adams Blanchard American Legion Post 1040 Veteran Ever Upward Scholarship Award was created by the post to support a veteran seeking to complete a degree.
