  • Dear Alumni and Friends,

The Harvard University Graduate School of Design underst ands that its mission is to educate designers to be bold thinkers, st rategic idealist s, societal catalyst s, and leading pract itioners, and to make major contributions to the body of design knowledge through sp eculative thinking and research act ivities. For this work to have maximum impact within the built environment, the GSD must remain the vital locus for the creation of knowledge in these areas of design. We need to continue to develop the technologies, processes, and funct ions that will both enhance how our buildings, landscapes, and cities perform for their users and confront the future challenges of our contemporary societies. This relationship between knowledge and societal impact is central to contemporary design pedagogy and research at the GSD. Our work would not be possible without generous philanthropic support from our alumni and friends. On behalf of everyone at the GSD, I am grateful for all that you do to make this School such a vibrant, collaborative environment. Thank you.

    Best wishes,

Mohsen Most afaviDean and Alexander and Vict oria Wiley Professor of Design

  • I donated to the campaign for the class gift because I wanted to be part of a larger group of donors who could say, “Look what my graduating class was able to do for our inst itution.” The GSD also provided me with a very generous scholarship for two years, and I want to make sure that future st udents have the same opportunity that I was provided.

Honoring the Legacy of Walter Gropius

Professor William (Bill) Breger MArch ’45

Early in his career, Professor William Breger sp ent two years as an assist ant to Walter Gropius — in fact , it was just the two of them in the offi ce. “We had a tremendous professional dialogue — I learned a great deal from him. He was a brilliant and kind man.”

At 91, Professor Breger recalls Gropius fondly, “I admired his great humility. My own life has been a modest interpretation of his greatness. Some might say very modest .” Like Gropius, Professor Breger prioritized teaching as well as pract icing. “I owe a great deal to Harvard, the School of Design, and to Gropius. In everything that I do in life, I am always conscious of the great gift I was given, and I wanted to give back.”

The Professor William Breger Fund, endowed with a $500,000 gift , was created in 2012 to honor the legacy of Gropius. “Harvard is a wonderful place that cares about values. I hope that my gift will help st udents to explore the social, st ruct ural, and philosophical honest y of architect ure as Gropius underst ood it.”

Expanding the Scope of International Financial Aid at the GSD

    Nelson K. Chen AB ’75, MArch ’78 and Margaret W. K. Wong

Nelson Chen and his wife, Margaret Wong, believe in the vital role of education, underst anding that quality higher education comes at a cost . In 2011, they pledged $100,000 toward the GSD Annual Fund, sett ing the bar for donations from other alumni. Desp ite his physical dist ance from Cambridge, Mr. Chen act ively supports the GSD in many ways — he has created a st udent prize for housing design, supported Asia GSD, served on both the Dean’s Advisory Council and the GSD Visiting Committ ee, and act ed as Asia Chair of the Sert Council.

“My years at Harvard, both in the College and at the GSD, profoundly shaped my thinking, att itudes and career. And, they continue to inform my professional and personal life on a daily basis. I consider it a privilege to help make a similar opportunity and experience available to a current generation of st udents with fi nancial need.”

Mr. Chen and Ms. Wong’s donation supports international fi nancial aid at the GSD as Mr. Chen explains, “until less than a decade ago, international st udents were not eligible for scholarships at the GSD. Yet their presence enriches and informs the overall academic experience, while promoting intellect ual and cultural exchange that benefi t future generations both domest ically and abroad in our increasingly global society. I was gratifi ed to see one of my most talented former undergraduate st udents in Hong Kong able to att ain a MArch degree at the GSD — it was only made possible with a scholarship.”

Creating a legacy at the GSD

Gregory Steven BaldwinAB ’62, MArch ’66, MAUD ’67

As evidenced by his lengthy and dist inguished professional career, Gregory Steven Baldwin FAIA, FAAR is remembered as a calm and articulate visionary who promoted process and collaboration. Mr. Baldwin had an ability to build consensus on the best ideas and was committ ed to creating livable and insp irational urban environments. He used these unique skills working on project s that sp anthe country from Washington, D.C. and New Jersey to California, Washington st ate and his hometown of Portland, Oregon. The Gregory S. Baldwin Fellowship was created in 2012, with a $500,000 gift from his family’s Lamb-Baldwin Foundation, whose board includes his wife Joan and children Benjamin and Sera. The Fellowship was created to honor, celebrate, and perpetuate his legacy. It is intended to support a top-performing st udent in their fi nal semest er of st udy in Architect ure, Landscape Architect ure, or Urban Design. According to his daughter Sera Kimura, “My father thought that Harvard changed his life. Harvard opened endless opportunities for him and he always wanted to give back. He thrived within the GSD community and remained involved throughout his life. Insp ired by the Rudy Bruner Award, he told me before he died that he hoped one day to create his own award to promote design through Harvard.” In addition to receiving three degrees from Harvard, Mr. Baldwin also met and shared fi ve of those Harvard years with his wife Joan in Cambridge. Mr. Baldwin was an intellect ually rich man, a fi ne conversationalist , a motivating sp eaker, and a great collaborator who credited Harvard in his development of these att ributes.

  • Harvard Design: Los Angeles was held November 9–10, 2012. Over 150 GSD faculty, alumni and friends from around the world gathered in Los Angeles to celebrate the GSD’s role in the future of design.

On Friday, alumni led site visits in downtown LA including the Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Inner-City Arts campus. Saturday’s events st arted at the Annenberg Beach House in Santa Monica where GSD faculty and alumni including Thom Mayne MArch ’78, Andrew Witt MDesS ’02, MArch ’07, Martha Welborne LF ’92, and Ken Smith MLA ’86 tackled subject s such as “The Future of Cities and Urbanization” and “The Future of Design Technology.” The summit concluded with a gala event on Saturday evening at the Hammer Museum.

The weekend was a resounding success and reinforced the GSD’s global reach and ability to impact societal change through design excellence. Kimberly J. Everett MUP ’98 summed it up well: “Although we are oft en reminded through intermitt ent articles and newslett ers about the signifi cance the GSD has in the design world, it is not until you sit amongst those making the news that you realize the power that we as graduates have.“

  • On March 1, 2013, the Harvard University Graduate School of Design celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Druker Traveling Fellowship with an exhibition and symposium that gathered many of its past recipients. The Fellowship was est ablished through the generosity of Ronald M. Druker LF ’76 and the Trust ees of the Bertram A. Druker Charitable Foundation. This gift is a result of Mr. Druker’s affi nity for the GSD, his eight-year teaching career and his Loeb experience.

The Fellowship is awarded annually for st udents to carry out comprehensive research-based travel throughout the world. Recipients are leaders in the design of urban environments and are expect ed to share their experiences with the GSD community through a lect ure or symposium. The goal of this endowed fellowship “is made with the intention of creating urban environments that are pract ical and imaginative resp onses to the broad sp ect rum of physical, political, fi nancial and aest hetic concerns of society.”

The GSD played a very important role in my life, both through my initial involvement as a Loeb Fellow and then eight years on the urban design faculty. I learned a signifi cant amount during my time as a Loeb and through my colleagues and st udents, many of whom are st ill friends today.

The Druker Fellowship was born out of my interest in travel. I gained insight from visiting the rest of the world, and I wanted to share that opportunity with st udents. The 25th anniversary celebration was gratifying because I was able to see the Fellows again, to hear of their experiences since the fellowship, and to underst and what it meant to them both personally and professionally. It’s a privilege for me to know them and to see how they have benefi ted.”
