There are lots of methods for a person to find a location, and absolute location is one of them.  Absolute location is a way to find a location by the directions that do not change.  This location can be used through Google Earth, GPS, road maps, etc.  It is written in a form of direction (north, east, south and west), hour, minutes then second, for example Hong Kong Disneyland’s absolute location is N22º18’55. 35” E114º02’23. 64”. N represents the direction of the place, 22 represents hour, 18 represents, and 55.35 represents seconds.

The Earth is divided into small squares by longitudes and latitudes. Longitudes represent east or west, latitudes are representing north or south. Absolute location consist of co-ordinates.

HOW TO READ A MAP

Maps are the basic implement for geography. They help us show the geography of a location. Maps can be used for the military, airports, weather, malls, etc. They can be displayed as road, political, topographic, physical, economic and climate maps. A map usually contains a scale, legend, compass, title and colours. Map reading is a skill in which all people should learn because it will be important for our daily life. The Disneyland map is crucial for visitors because it shows where places are located and the distance between them.

Scale

Scale indicates a certain distant on the map and ground. It is expressed as a ratio, i.e – 1 cm : 10 km. Maps for theme parks or malls or airports does not require a scale because readers do not need to know the distance, they know by landmarks. Think about it, when you read the Disney map, do you need to know the distance? No, people know it by landmarks or objects around it. For instance – A washroom is beside Space Mountain. However, on google map, it shows a scale on the park and it estimated 2.5 cm : 1 km.

Legend

Legend or key shows the meaning of symbols, it is a short way to show

what they are. For Example on the Disney map, a men and women represent the respiratory. A fork and knife represents restaurants. The cross represents the first aid. Legends are crucial as the symbols appear on all types of map. On some maps like a hiking map, there are different lines and they can represent as water, lakes, highways, roads, etc.

Compass

Almost every map has a compass, some just points at north, the magnetic north and some points at al four direction. Hong Kong Disneyland is facing West. Fantasy Land is west of Adventure Land.

Colours

Most maps are coloured because they are diffracted into different areas. It is also makes us easier to read. For instant on topographic maps, brown is mountain and blue is water. The Disney map is diffracted into 4 colour zones, main street, tomorrow, fantasy and adventure land. The number symbols are also colour coated to their zones. Look at the legend for the colour meanings.

In conclusion, these are the basic skills for map reading. It is important to know how to read a map because it will be very helpful when traveling or finding certain locations.

Space is among one of the ways a place is looked at when it is considered in geographical terms. It is important to note the spatial organization of an area. The spatial organization of an area also has a large impact on its enjoyability and aura. This includes how space is occupied, the population density, the flow, as well as the accessibility. Disneyland, for example, is quite accessible from a variety of places, despite its location on Lantau Island. This is so it can attract people from a wide variety of places, and keep them satisfied. The Disneyland MTR resort line is probably the most practical and convenient solution for people, available for interchange at Sunny Bay Station of the Tung Chung Line (Orange). The ride totals 23 minutes from the Hong Kong International Airport, 30 minutes from Kowloon station and 33 minutes from Hong Kong station, where official Disneyland tickets can also be picked up. Especially in Hong Kong, people like convenience so Disney’s accessibility is very effective and positive.

The population density of a place is another factor that contributes to personal opinions and the spatial organization of an area. Population density is the measure of land as compared to the number of people per square kilometer or square mile. There are many criticisms on the population density of Disney being too large, and the lack of

rides and attractions not being able to appease the immense flow of tourists. As Rory Boland says, “Prices are expensive for what the park contains.” With tourism in Hong Kong having increased 22 percent in 2010, attendance has increased 13 percent to 5.2 million visitors, while the only extension to the park so far has been “It’s a Small World”, proving that the park expansion has not been able to keep up with the increase in population density. This shows how the spatial organization of an area really has an impact on its enjoyability and reviews.

Yet another factor of opinions and spatial organization is the distance between attractions. The rides are quite large as the theme park currently occupies 22.4 hectares but only holds 30 attractions. This means the space difference is large, which causes some people to complain. However, Disney is expected to house 100 attractions soon with the park expansion where 3 new lands will be added: Grizzly Trial, Mystic Point, and Toy Story Land, which will decrease the distance between attractions, decrease the population density, and therefore, change the spatial organization of Disneyland.

The aura and atmosphere of a place is very reliant on its spatial organization. For example, spacious and elegant, the Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel is complete with Victorian elegance and prestige, loaded with a magical atmosphere. The limited population of these hotels contribute to its pleasant and luxurious aura, which would be completely contrasting if it was as densely packed as Disneyland. Being an exquisite and even exclusive hotel due to its price, overcrowding will disturb the hotel’s upscale reputation and cause guests to feel uncomfortable. The capacious, grand hallways and low population density bring Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel the

grandeur it is known to have.

However, since Disney’s Hollywood-themed hotel is mainly aimed at families who do not want to spend large sums to live in the Hong Kong Disneyland hotel, it is not as spacious and has a higher population density than Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel. Thus, from these examples it is proved that spatial arrangement, population density, as well as the accessibility of places alter to fit accordingly to their purposes.

Physical characteristic or features means natural features, which mean things that are originally on Earth. Although all rides in Disneyland is man-made, however, there are many plants being planted in the park to enhance Disney’s scenic views.

Adventure land is one of the theme land inside Disney. It is a simulation of a jungle, just like the one in Tar San. Therefore, in the interior of the Adventure land, there are a wide range of physical characteristics, such as trees, stream, fire, stones, etc.

Though besides the Adventure Land, in the main entrance, the Disney logo is created by flowers around, which can be included as a physical characteristic. These green plants highlight and prettify the logo, which would indirectly help create a good impression to the visitors. Behind the logo, there is a train that carries visitors to different theme park.

Hong Kong Disneyland is built on reclaimed land, therefore, Disney can build lots of exciting games in the area. Apart from paid areas of Hong Kong

Disney Land, there is also a place that is free of charge but it is a property of Hong Kong Disney Land, such as Inspiration Lake. Inspiration lake is officially known as The Inspiration Lake recreation centre. It was opened on 16th August 2005. The entire lake take up an area of about 12 hector. It is the largest artificial lake in Hong Kong. It was decorated with 4800 tress, 430,000 shrubs. In the centre of the water mountain, it could rise up to 18 meters high. Disneyland’s inspiration lake, which stores rainwater and makes the theme park almost self sufficient in watering it’s gardens. It has lots of grass and tress in that area.

Overall, there are various of physical characteristics in Hong Kong but not much in Disneyland. As Hong Kong Disneyland is a reclamation land, there is no actual physical characteristics in it. All the physical features you see today are being placed on it after the land was reclaimed. Therefore, these physical features are partially man-made.

In geography, we study the earth’s surface and the relationship of human to it. Places are bounded areas on the Earth’s surface for example cities and towns. A region is part of the Earth’s surface that has similar characteristics throughout its extent, for example Asia, North America and Australia. Within places and regions, there are the physical environment, human environment and the cultural characteristics.

The human characteristics is about the man made features of a certain place or region. Human characteristics can involve objects or landmarks that have been put out by human and it helps identify the place for instant the Eiffel Tower is a landmark and a human characteristic of Paris. The castle in Disney is a human characteristic. The study of human characteristics is important because it shows the relationship of human and the earth, it tells what we have created and how it can effect the environment.

The Four Zones Disney has a wide range of human characteristics. Lets pretend Hong Kong Disneyland is a region and it is divided into four places, fantasy, tomorrow, adventure and main street U.S.A. In fantasyland, you can visit the Sleeping Beauty Castle, fly with Dumbo, experience the life of Winnie the pooh and Cinderella. Experience the magical world in 3-D. In tomorrow-land, get to experience a different technology with Buzz and Stitch in Space mountain, Autopeia, UFOs and Stitch’s space craft. In adventure land, there is the river cruise

and Tarzan tree house where tourist can experience a jungle life with Tarzan. The theater is a place where you can experience an everyday African life with the Lion King. In the main street, there are shops, restaurants, fountains and other good attractions.

Hotel

The Hong Kong Disneyland is not only a theme park, but there also the Hollywood and Disneyland Hotels for tourist to visit. In the hotel it contains spas, a maze, swimming pools, picnic parks, an Inspiration Lake Recreation Center and restaurants. These are all the human characteristics of the Disney hotels.

Transportation

Transportations for Hong Kong Disneyland are important because it is isolated from communities. The Disneyland train was built just for tourist because it is convenient for everyone since it links with the Sunny Bay MTR station.

The park’s human features bounds the place to help distinguish Disneyland. These manmade features are what make Disneyland special and magical.

When we talk about what makes a certain place special, we usually talk about its cultural characteristics- the way of life that defines an area from another. Take France for example. Baguettes, bagels, art, and the Eiffel tower are all items that we associate with France because they are such integral parts of French culture. In Disneyland, we can look at it’s cultural aspects in these ways: cultural place, cultural landscape, cultural diffusion, cultural ecology, and cultural interaction.

Cultural Place Disney, as a cultural place, has many cultural aspects that define it, and differentiate it from other theme parks, like Ocean Park. Disney has a distinct culture- it is carefree, magical, happy, and beautiful. It is carefree because through Disneyland, hotels, cruises or movies, people can bask and enjoy themselves in a place where troubles can be forgotten, where one can step into a magical land of fantasy and become special, prized, and royal. Also, most of its cartoons, movies, and theme parks try to capture the same dream-like and magical feeling that Disney is most known for, which gives it a fantasy feeling since anything can happen. These aspects have always been a part of their culture since the beginning, and will continue to be paramount.

Cultural Interaction Disney’s characters all contribute to what makes Disney special, and is due to cultural interaction- the relationships that exist between cultural components which characterize a community, and therefore result in certain decisions. In this instance, the reason Disney makes the decision to focus its theme parks on fantasy is due to it’s ‘magical’ culture. Also, it chose to make most of their animation protagonists friendly, small animals, because their aim is usually children. This appeals to kids because they can become the characters they adore, and experience scenes from their favorite movies. In the Buzz Lightyear ride, visitors are able to fight alongside Buzz Lightyear against Emperor Zurg and save the ‘galactic universe’. In a cultural, magical land like Disney, ‘nothing is impossible’. This cultural interaction is what makes Disney so magical.

*Places and Regions*

Page 12: Hong Kong Disneyland Magazine

12]

Cultural Landscape and Cultural Ecology

The crucial point that differentiates cultural landscape and ecology is that cultural landscape consists of the topography of a certain culture region that defines it, whereas cultural ecology is the physical environment of an area that comes as a result of its culture. Examples of cultural landscape in Disney would include the style of its attractions, architecture, and costumes. Examples of cultural landscape are lush, green lawns, healthy vegetation, and beautiful scenery, which are especially evident in the Disney hotels and at Inspiration Lake.

Cultural Diffusion

Cultural diffusion studies the movement of culture in and out of certain areas. Disney’s culture is diffused by its movies and products that are sold and accessible by many, and thus has a large influence on its audience.

Cultural Interaction

Last but not least, there is cultural interaction, which is none other than the

interaction and relationships within a culture. In Disney, relationships normally start at a young age, and may become weaker as a child starts to grow out of Disney’s fantasy atmosphere. However, after they have children of their own, their relationship with Disney might become stronger again, as they become customers. Also, the families, couples, and friends that enjoy time together in Disneyland are also examples of cultural interaction.

In conclusion, Disneyland is filled with a rich and vibrant culture, which can be seen through cultural place, cultural landscape, cultural diffusion, cultural ecology, and cultural interaction.

most Lantau residents would

have recently heard of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge that is currently in construction. It is expected to be 50 km long and cost approximately $73 billion yuan. The Director of Environmental Protection claimed that an adequate ‘environmental impact assessment’ was conducted concerning this construction. However, Tung Chung resident Chu Yee Wah has pressed a lawsuit challenging whether “the Director of Environmental Protection has properly discharged her statutory duties and functions under the Environmental Impact”. She

believes the study was not comprehensive enough, and there were many coherent issues that were intentionally looked over, such as impacts to lifestyle, the natural environment, animals, as well as human health.

One such is the impact this new form of transport connecting mainland China to Hong Kong will have on the culture and vibrancy of Hong Kong. Many citizens worry it will disrupt their lifestyle, and are hesitant towards further opening Hong Kong to “noisy, ill-mannered” mainlanders, fearing it would ruin the ethics of Hong Kong people. Others believe the government chose

to make this move purely for its own economic advantages- to “[promote] the development of regional tourism industries”- without thoroughly considering the impacts this bridge would have on the people, atmosphere, and environment of Hong Kong. With the new bridge, tourism would become a teeming industry, and the already-congested streets and malls of Hong Kong would soon be overflowing well above capacity. Stress levels in Hong Kong are already high, and the traffic jams and

unreasonable queues will no doubt add a huge contribution of indignant, rude people. A higher population usually means more trouble, and causes a headache when it comes to maintaining control. What is to become of the Hong Kong people have come to love and revere- it’s unique, sparkling culture, and distinctive cuisine? Will inviting more tourists and traffic ruin the heritage and traditions that are already here? The Forbidden City of China- once an elegant, beautiful place- has been destroyed because of its availability to the public. Likewise, by opening ourselves to the world, will we lose sight of what’s important?

Where will Lantau’s future lead us? The Hong Kong- Zhu Hai- Macau bridge

*Environment and Society*

Page 14: Hong Kong Disneyland Magazine

14]

The Zhuhai Bridge

is becoming the world’s

longest cross sea bridge. The bridge may have positive effects on the economy, tourism and bring convenience to transportation but there are many environment concerns. With bridge crossing on the natural habitat, and artificial islands being made, it will destroy the marine life and endanger white dolphins. There are an approximate 2000 white dolphins left in China. The oil and pollution produced as a byproduct of this bridge will effect the ocean’s ecosystems, as it will ruin the sea banks and thus destroy life.

The construction has started but many people are not satisfied with the impact it

will have on their health. The EIA subcommittee has made many negative comments towards this project, as many civilians are concerned on the steep increase of air residue, especially those in Lantau Island and Tung Chung, who will be the main victims of the pollution. Another negative impact this project will have on the environment is noise pollution. With the traffic from Macau, Guangdong and Hong Kong, it will certainly worsen the air and noise pollution of Hong Kong. The noise generated will not only effect the civilians but also marine life. Many residents in Tung Chung are concerned of the health risks that come with the bridge. Chu, a 65 year old retired women is concerned about public health because of her diabetes condition.

The government has many plans in hand for Lantau’s future- ones that will ‘benefit’ the economy, but have negative impacts on culture, the environment, the animals, and human health. As to where Lantau’s future will lead, it will irrefutably be one of environmental destruction: the noise from machines and the exposition of toxic air will impact the sensitive habitat; the sea banks, mangroves, marine life, and even humans. Is this rational? You decide.
