Honesty Map of Great Britain

8. LONDON Fashion victims beware of Londoners, as people from the capital are most likely to be honest and tell you if they think you have bad taste (31 per cent). You also need to be a sparkling personality to get by as Londoners aren’t backward about telling you when you are boring, with over a quarter of Londoners (27 per cent) admitting to doing so. 9. NORTH EAST Bad news if you have been dumped recently in the North East, as almost one in five (18 per cent) would-be Romeos confess to having been less than honest when ending a relationship. However, as over half (57 per cent) of people in the North East admit to becoming more honest with age, it could be that an older partner is the key to an honest relationship – or break-up! 10. SOUTH EAST If you like to bury your head in the sand, get down to the South East as more than a quarter (28 per cent) of people there would sometimes rather not know the truth than be told the bare facts. This aversion to being totally upfront could be because folk in the South East embarrass easily – 40 per cent admit to lying to avoid a shameful moment. 11.WALES Only two thirds (66 per cent) say that they are straight talkers, making it the self-confessed most dishonest population in Great Britain. This lenient attitude towards the truth could be due to the fact that the Welsh have learnt their lesson about being too honest – over half of them (53 per cent) have upset someone by being too blunt. 1.WEST MIDLANDS Congratulations to the West Midlands as it is the most honest place in Great Britain – 79 per cent claim to be straight-talking, streets ahead of anywhere else! However, make sure that you are talking with someone from the West Midlands face-to-face as they admit that this is the best way to get an honest answer from them (31 per cent admit to being more truthful in person). 2. SOUTH WEST If you don't want to hear 'yes' when asking if your bum looks big, you're best off not going to the South West as they are likely to tell you if it’s the truth (42 per cent). South Westerners in general have a ‘no- nonsense’ attitude towards the truth, as 61 per cent believe that honesty is the best policy and would rather people said it how it is (67 per cent) than shied away from the facts. 3. EAST MIDLANDS Gourmet chefs only in the East Midlands please, as one in five honest Midlanders (20 per cent) have told someone that their cooking wasn’t up to scratch. However, be aware that if an East Midlander wants to catch your eye they will have no qualms about bending the truth, as 18 per cent admit to a little dishonesty when trying to impress someone. 4. YORKS AND HUMBER The folk of Yorks and Humber are famed for being direct but it turns out that they may not be as straightforward as people think, with 41 per cent believing that a little white lie doesn’t hurt here and there. However, if they do stretch the truth it will be for a good reason, as 36 per cent believe that sometimes you have to lie to avoid upsetting people. 5. EAST OF ENGLAND The East of England is definitely the place to be if you like to please, as 68 per cent of East Anglians freely admit to telling a porkie to protect someone’s feelings. To ensure that they continue to keep the peace, 44 per cent of people here will spin a yarn to try to talk themselves out of a tricky situation and smooth things over. 6. SCOTLAND To stay away from conflict, take a trip to Scotland. The Scots are the least confrontational of all Brits, with two thirds (66 per cent) shunning the truth if it helps to avoid an argument. However, don’t be tempted into a lie yourself, as 34 per cent of Scots say that they know when someone is lying. 7. NORTH WEST It’s hard to make friends in the North West as one third of people (33 per cent) have been very brutal and told someone that they didn’t like them. But be wary of what they say at work, as 19 per cent confess that this is where they are likely to spin a yarn. description

Brits might pride themselves on being straight talkers, but it seems that their attitudes to honesty may well depend on which part of the country they are from, according to findings from the ‘Straight Talking Report’ from Direct Line car insurance specialist. Our approach to the truth, including when and why we will bend it, varies from place to place. For example, Londoners can be straight talking about sartorial slip-ups, the Welsh admit to sometimes making people cry due to their bluntness and the Scots tend to steer clear of the truth to avoid conflict.
