2016
G’day everyone.
Well the first six months of 2017 have now gone and
unfortunately due to the hot and humid weather and other
commitments, Chris and I have not managed to attend many
of the club’s rides and events.
One of the events we did miss was the HMCCQ’s annual
Combined Breakfast Run to Mt Glorious in January. The
weather was very crappy – extremely hot and humid and
drizzling rain, so we didn’t fancy a ride over Mt Glorious in
those conditions. I understand that a number of club
members did however brave the weather and attended this
event. I also understand the numbers were down this year,
for good reason.
That doesn’t mean we didn’t get out on our bikes and enjoy
ourselves. We have had three rides down to NSW and one
trip with the caravan to regional Queensland in the first 6
months of this year. Two trips were to ride the Highways
and “ways” connecting the New England Tablelend of NSW
to the coast, such as the Oxley, Gwyder and Bruxner
Highways and the Waterfall and Thunderbolts Ways. All
these roads offer excellent riding with very picturesque
views, good reasonably priced accommodation and lots of
places to eat. These rides included a visit to the National
Motorcycle Museum at Nabiac and overnight stays at Texas,
Nundle, Harrington, Grafton, and Tamworth. So if you
haven’t been down that part of the world for a while I would
recommend doing it. You won’t be disappointed. The other
ride was to the Inverell Motorcycle Restorers Rally. This is
our fourth trip to the Inverell Rally and it is always a great
weekend, very well organized and a good roll-up of bikes to
look at. John McNair has put together a story about the
Inverell Rally which is included in the ride reports.
Once again Eric, Merilyne, John and Mal have put together
a full ride calendar for the second six months of 2017. There
should be something for everyone to attend and hopefully if
you cannot attend any events, try to make it to one of the
club meetings at the Belmont Tavern.
As I have said previously, it is difficult to confidently
schedule events for the next six months and there may be
some amendments as we get closer to those events so any
changes to the ride calendar will be notified to members as
they come to hand. Once again, there is a mix of rides to the
north, south and west sides of Brisbane and rides scheduled
by the Honda CB750/4 Club and the VJMC which should
ensure a good turn-out for each ride.
To date there has been no discussion about the club’s mid-
year social night / dinner at the Belmont Tavern. The mid-
year dinner is usually held in July so if there is any interest
in doing one this year it will need to be discussed at the July
club meeting. The last couple of years have been excellent
with up to 20 members and their wives / partners attending
and having a good old chin-wag!
You may recall that a decision was made at an earlier
meeting this year not to have the Living in the 70s Bike
Show this year and instead to show our bikes at a couple of
other club’s shows. To date we have attended the Ray
Owens Bike Show at Canungra in early May 2017 which
was a great success with 10 bikes on show and a lot of
interest from attendees. I have included a short story about
the show in the Ride Reports. The Laverda Concours is
scheduled for October this year and this will be another
chance to show our Honda CB750/4s.
The Living in the 70s Bike Show was introduced in 2009
following the Gatton 40th Anniversary Rally to raise much
needed funds for the club and pay back the debt from the
rally. Chris and I organized the bike show for the first 5
years after which Eric and Merilyn took over its
organization. It has been a good earner for the club and
effectively provided a base for showing off our bikes and
classics from other clubs and the public. If the club decides
to run the bike show in 2018, I suggest we establish a
committee to organize it so that it doesn’t become too much
for one or two members. This matter should be a subject for
discussion at a future meeting.
There was some discussion at the December 2016 club
meeting about having a weekend ride during the first half of
2017. Unfortunately that has not happened and there are no
proposals on the table at this stage. However, a couple of
years back, the club had a weekend ride up through Kilcoy,
Kilkivan and Crows Nest to Kingsthorpe for the Saturday
night and we returned home on the Sunday via the Army
Aviation Museum at Oakey with lunch at the Farmers Arms
Hotel at Cabarlah, then via Hampton and Est. It was an
excellent weekend and everyone enjoyed themselves so we
could do something similar in the second half of 2017 or
arrange to attend someone else’s rally. I suggest this should
be a topic of discussion at an upcoming club meeting and, if
there is enough interest, a route could be planned out and
options for accommodation organized. If you can’t be at the
club meetings and are interested in going on a weekend ride
you could either let Eric, Merilyne, Mal, John or me know.
Finally, the club’s end of year Christmas lunch will be held
following the December club meeting. In the past this has
been well patronized and we simply moved from where we
have the meeting outdoors into the restaurant part of the
Tavern for the meal. Last year it was combined with the
VJMC. However, last year the Tavern management decided
in their wisdom that we didn’t need to be inside so we
sweltered outside in the heat much to our disdain! So, this
year we will need to decide what we are going to do ie. stay
at the Tavern or go somewhere else. Perhaps we can discuss
this matter at a meeting before the end of the year.
On that matter, recently there has been some discontent with
the new management of the Belmont Tavern and perhaps,
with the start of a new financial year, this is a good time to
reconsider venue options for our meetings, including the
time when they are held ie. is the first Sunday of each month
EDITOR’S EDITORIAL!
Page 3 of 11 The In-Fourmer – Official Newsletter of the Honda CB750/4 SOHC Club Inc. July 2017
2016 the best time for the meetings? I suggest we discuss this
matter at the next available meeting and, if agreed, start the
ball rolling to find a new venue.
Another housekeeping matter that has come to light is the
storage of the club’s hardware, ie. eskies, gazebos, banners
and bike show display materials. At present the majority of
these items are stored by Owen Finter at his house and I
believe he is happy with that arrangement for the time
being. However, the problem arises when the club wants to
use these items for a bike show and the keeper of the items
is not available or some items are held in a different
location. While the present arrangements may be fine,
perhaps the club should consider what other arrangements
are available. For example, as one option the club could
purchase a covered trailer for towing by car in which to
store the items. Of course, there would be a need to store the
trailer at somebody’s house when not in use, but at least all
the items would be stored in the same place and it would be
a simple matter for a club member to collect the trailer and
tow it to the venue in question and return it afterwards.
There would of course be the initial cost of purchasing such
a trailer and keeping it maintained and registered, the cost of
which would be minimal. There may be other options
available and I suggest we discuss those at a future meeting.
The club’s AGM is scheduled to be held as usual in August.
Could everyone please give some consideration to helping
out the club by nominating for a committee position or
offering to help out with various club activities. There is
minimal work required and it is rewarding to be involved
with the club’s management. I will be emailing out the
AGM agenda within the next couple of weeks and following
the AGM the annual return statement will be sent to the
Office of Fair Trading so we can continue as a registered
club for the 2017/2018 financial year.
If you went on a club run, or even your own ride, and you
would like to tell everyone about it you can email me details
with a few photos and I will email it out to club members.
It’s always good to have feedback about the club runs so
that members can keep abreast of the club’s activities.
Anything emailed to me can also be put up on the club’s
website for everyone to read, however you will need to let
me know if you don’t want that to happen.
If anybody wishes to put something in future editions of the
Club’s newsletter or just want to have something sent out to
club members, please email me the details. Please also note
that the newsletter will only be emailed out to members –
there is no hard copy being prepared and as a result,
membership fees are held at $25.00 per year which started
with the 2015/16 financial year. As usual, membership fees
are due at the end of June each year and details are provided
below in the “Membership Update” section.
I hope you enjoy reading this issue of “The InFourmer”.
Please note there is no club meeting in January 2018 with
the first club meeting being held at the usual venue
(Belmont Tavern – at this stage) in February 2018 (see Ride
/ Events Calendar below).
Historic Bike Registration:- You may have heard some
discussion about the Special Interest Vehicle Registration
System (SIVS) in Queensland. The Historic Motorcycle
Club of Queensland (HMCCQ) has been actively lobbying
the State Government to have the SIVS bike registration
reviewed as it considers the costs for owners is too high
with too many restrictions. While there has been some
support from various politicians, there has to date been no
positive moves within Government to make any changes,
although they have apparently agreed to undertake a review.
What that translates to in the way of cost or conditions is
questionable and may not improve the situation at all – time
will tell. The HMCCQ has requested the support of other
Queensland based classic / historic motorcycle clubs to put
more pressure on Government. As such, it has asked the
Honda CB750/4 SOHC Club for support by way of a letter
to the Government and visits to local politicians. I suggest
the club discuss this matter at a future meeting and perhaps
we can put together a letter of support.
On another matter, you may also have heard some
discussion about the SIVS not applying to bikes owned by
members of clubs like the Honda CB750/4 SOHC Club Inc.
I can assure you that bikes registered by members of the
Honda CB750/4 SOHC Club Inc are fully eligible for
cheaper registration under the SIVS as the Honda
CB750/4 SOHC Club is an “incorporated club” under the
Act and continues to be incorporated as the club submits
annual returns to the Office of Fair Trading each year. Your
$25 membership fee can potentially save you thousands of
hard earned dollars each year – an excellent investment!!!
Vale Ron Hewitt:- Some of you may not be aware of Ron’s
passing a few weeks back, finally losing his 12 month fight
with pancreatic cancer. Ron and Joan have been long time
supporters of the Honda CB750/4 Club, particularly helping
out to promote and support the club’s activities after the
Gatton 40th anniversary rally. We often saw Ron and Joan at
many of the club’s events and club members were invited to
their house for various events on many occasions, including
the famed workshops days and their Christmas get-
togethers. Ron was passionate about motorbikes and indeed
owned bike shops and associated businesses throughout the
years. He owned Honda CB750/4s as well as ST1100’s and
many other models. He was very proud of his engineering
ability which was legendary amongst the motorcycling
community and he often proclaimed that he could do almost
any rebuild project in his workshop and didn’t have to send
anything out to be done by others. His ingenuity was
certainly demonstrated in his sidecar outfits and by building
his three-wheeler powered by an ST1100 engine from
scratch. I liked and respected Ron and he will be sadly
missed! If you get the opportunity, please give Joan a call.
I’m sure she would be happy to talk with you.

Inverell Motorcycle Restorers Rally
After meeting at Blacksoil we headed off with a small
number of six bikes and eight people. We got off the
Warrego Hwy as soon as we could and went through to
Walloon where we turned right to Rosewood and onto
Laidley. We encountered some roadworks along this section
of road with those annoying traffic lights which seem to take
forever to change. Soon we were passing through Laidley
and on to Forrest Hill and Gatton. We headed out onto the
Heiffer Creek Rd from Gatton and soon we arrived at the
Ma Ma Creek Café for morning tea.
After milkshakes and coffees it was away for the ride up
through Heiffer Creek and out to the New England Hwy
near Clifton. The Heiffer Creek Gap is an alternative to the
Toowoomba Range and the Cunningham Gap crossings of
the Great Dividing Range and it is not as steep as the other
two, a lot quieter and more interesting road. The weather
was beautiful although a little cool for the run down to
Allora. We turned off here with Ross leading us on a nice
back road through to Warwick. We actually almost
bypassed Warwick township, cutting through the western
side of town. A fuel stop here and then it was on the road
again to Stanthorpe and then to Eukey and Greg Patterson’s
place. Greg joined us and we left for Ballandeen Hotel for
lunch. The usual fine food was served here.
Although the sun was out it was quite brisk on the run down
the New England Hwy to Wallangarra, Tenterfield and Glen
Innes where we turned off onto the Gwydir Hwy to Inverell.
We all found our accommodation and settled in before
heading off to the RSM Club for tea. After our large lunch
most of us sought small meals.
Saturday morning is the usual gathering at the Inverell
Pioneer Park for the commencement of the day’s Rally
activities. As they do each year, the organisers had a
magnificent array of food on hand along with tea and coffee.
We parked our bikes in the respective areas and checked in
to the registrar. The bikes were spread out into year groups
on a beautiful grassed area alongside the park’s lake. There
was quite a magnificent array of motorcycles on display
including several Honda 4’s.
Soon we were away on the Saturday ride to Pindari Dam
near Ashford, a distance of about 85klms. We had a stop off
here and then we were on our way back to the Ashford State
School where the bikes all lined up again on the school oval.
I would have estimated there would have been over 150
bikes on the ride. The school P & C committee treated us to
a lunch of sandwiches, cakes and drinks.
After lunch we split up with some going to the Graman
Hotel and the rest of us made out way back to Inverell. We
had a couple of hours spare so we headed to the Inverell
Transport Museum. I had been to it before at different
premises but it now has a new permanent home which
houses around fifty motorcycles and close on one hundred
cars, trucks and buses. An excellent venue.
Saturday night was the Rally Presentation Dinner at the
Inverell RSM Club auditorium which was a good night with
good food and good company. A few of us won some raffle
prizes which Ray Burrows kindly transported home to
Brisbane in his ute.
Sunday saw us split up with Ben & Chris and Dave going
home via Texas and Gary, Ross, Peter, Lynn and I going
back up the New England Hwy to Carnell Raceway at
Stanthorpe where they had a Drag Race Meeting on. We
checked out a few cars getting blown into the weeds by
motorbikes for a while and after refuelling and morning tea
at Macca’s it was onto Aratula for a final stop. The return
ride home had two K7’s, one F2 and one K2. These
attracted a fair deal of attention whenever we stopped. This
was another fantastic weekend in the beautiful New England
region of NSW with cool but great weather and great
company. (John McNair)

Ray Owens Bike Show & Swap
Sunday morning broke to a fine but cool May day and Chris
and I were looking forward to the ride down to Canungra for
the annual Ray Owens Bike Show at the show grounds. We
headed off down the gateway on our K2 and turned off at
Yatala North as we usually do only to discover Stanmore
Road closed following the floods that washed away the
abutments to the bridge where it joins Beenleigh Road. So,
we turned around and rode back to Beenleigh to have
another go. Lo and behold we had just turned onto
Beenleigh road when we pulled up behind another blue K2
much the same as ours – it just happened to be John McNair
and Lyn, also heading to the bike show. So we had company
for the last leg of the ride.
When we arrived, Owen, Klaas and others had already been
busy early that morning and set up the gazebos and displays
– it looked impressive and the HMCCQ also thought so as it
published a photo and story of the display in its monthly
Journal – see story at back of newsletter. We had 10 bikes
on display throughout the morning and many visitors to us,
many who said they had owned or would like to have owned
one!
Not to be outdone, there was an excellent display of bikes
from all generations and makes in the bike show, including
a number of Honda CB750/4s. There was a huge crowd in
attendance and it is obviously a very popular event. It was
also great to catch up with Ron Hewitt in his wheelchair –
one of his last outings!
We lasted until around 12:30pm before deciding it was time
to pack up and head for home. However, everyone decided
to head into Canungra for lunch at one of the well
patronized cafes.
The ride home was the reverse of the ride down and we
arrived home around 4:00pm after a very satisfying day.

It often seems like quite a chore to organize a club ride for a
group of people. It can be made easier though with a few
preparations before the event. I don’t say that I am an expert
but over the last 40 years I have been on and organized a
huge number of rides and I hope this article is of help.
Think about where your ride is going. If its winter and you
are in Melbourne then you may not want to go into the
mountains. Similarly if you are in Mildura you might not
want to have a ride down into the Mallee country in the
middle of summer. So consider the weather when deciding
where to go.
You can have rides to a coffee shop or a motorcycling event.
These can be a ride to the coffee shop or just meet there.
Regular catch ups like this are a great social outing and
bonds a club together. In the summertime early morning
breakfast rides are good in that you get out and have a ride
and can be back before it gets too hot. For the suburban
areas, a night ride is a great summer night outing. Not a
good idea in rural areas though with those Skippy things
around. Not to mention the odd deer around now too. A
friend was driving to work in the early hours before sunrise
and spotted two deer in a park in suburban Brisbane
recently. I wouldn’t like one of them for a mascot thanks.
Pick out a departure point that is next to or at a garage so
riders can leave the departure point with full tanks. This
avoids stopping again at the first garage to refuel. Plenty of
room for parking is important too. It’s also good if there is
coffee and food there for those who get there early. Try to

CLUB RIDE

2016 select a garage that is on the outskirts of town in the
direction you are going preferably after the last set of traffic
lights. That way there is less chance of the group being split
up. This also saves members from travelling into a suburban
meeting point and then riding back out past their suburb. I
like to try and avoid taking a group through bad
intersections and really busy shopping centres, its too easy
to get separated and some may take a chance in an
endeavour to stay with the group especially if they are in an
area they don’t know.
Before departure advise your fellow riders of where they are
going and ensure that your lead and tail rider know the ride
route. The tail rider should if possible be on a bike that
stands out in your mirrors. Ensure all riders know who the
lead and tail riders are before departure. If you are travelling
on a long ride see who has got the shortest fuel range and
plan your fuel stops to suit that bike and when you stop
ensure everyone tops up. I’ve heard it many times before
when people say “It’s okay, I have plenty of fuel left”.
However they usually don’t have enough to last to next
planned fuel stop thus requiring another fuel stop in between
and another 20 to 30 minutes goes by with people having a
coffee, smoke and toilet visit. I once went on a 600klm club
ride from Sydney to Corryong in Victoria via Cooma,
Cabramurra and Khancoban however I had to work on the
Saturday morning so had a solo ride down three hours
behind the club and arrived one hour behind them. Of
course I only had the one bike to fill up but I planned my
stops and had a drink, food and toilet break at the same
place.
On a long ride, keep an eye on your mirrors for the rider
behind you. If you notice that rider is missing stop as soon
as you can and if the rider in front is watching their mirrors
they should stop as well. This way a rider doesn’t get left a
hundred kilometres back with something broken.
When booking motels, check if they have undercover
parking. This makes it a lot easier to unpack or pack a bike
in bad weather (Editor - and sealed parking areas so that
nobody drops their bike on lose gravel!). Overnight rides are
also great and if you can find accommodation within
walking distance of eating outlets it means you can have a
drink without having to ride back to your motel.
Most importantly, just get out there and do it. Keep safe and
have lots of fun.
