Lesson Twenty-one

Detoxification Principles & Basics

Detoxification Principles - Introduction

• In lesson thirteen we’ll cover the principles of safe and effective detoxification. This will involve a little theory, but we’ll mainly focus on:

– Toxin avoidance

– Nutritional intervention

– Protocol design and specific supplements

– Heavy metal detoxification

– Specific activities and processes that can enhance detoxification

– The role of “cleanses”

Detoxification – Avoiding Toxins

• The first step of detoxification is to reduce exposure. I use the analogy of trying to empty water from a leaky boat without plugging the leaks. You’re continuing to allow the water to get into the hull of the boat and have no hope of getting rid of the water completely until you stop the flow, so to speak.

Detoxification – Air and Water

– Don’t wear shoes indoors

– Have open windows as often as possible

– Don’t smoke indoors

– Get carpets thoroughly cleaned or consider having them replaced with tiling or stone flooring (expensive)

– Don’t bring dry cleaning into the house right away

Detoxification – Air and Water

– Consider using air purifiers

– Consider a water filtration system (whole house or just for drinking and showering)

– Consider where pets are kept (reduce dander, etc.)

– Keep bleach, detergents, etc. outside or in the garage

– Don’t use air fresheners in the home or car

Detoxification – Air and Water

• It’s worth explaining to clients and patients that they’ll absorb as many, if not more toxins, from water when they take a shower or breathe in the vapour, than they will if they drink it.

Detoxification – Air and Water

• Get them to read Dr. Martin Fox’s (PhD) Healthy Water Report as it explains the whys and wherefores of healthy water in beautiful detail.

Detoxification - Food

• Following the nutrition principles taught in Hompes Method Level I automatically reduces toxin intake substantially. Switching people to whole, natural food (organic where possible) is a great way of literally slashing toxin exposure overnight.

Detoxification - Food

• Avoid or minimise:– Gluten

– Processed grain products and those containing sugar

– Non-organic dairy

– Nuts and seeds (PUFA are toxic)

– Oily fish

– Undercooked or raw greens

– Soy

– White sugar

– GM foods

– Alcohol

Detoxification - Food

• Specific considerations for food:

– Use organic food where possible (see next slides)

– Wash fresh produce thoroughly in water and vinegar to remove pesticides.

– Dairy needs to be organic (PCBs)

– Meat and poultry ideally needs to be organic

– Avoid farmed fish at all costs

– Avoid the fish with the highest mercury content

– Eat fish with lower mercury content

Detoxification - Food

• Take care when eating out – I see so many clients sabotage their efforts by eating out several times per week. Most restaurants don’t use high quality ingredients – they want to maximise profit and (most) don’t give a shit about the health of their patrons. A good chef can make anything taste nice!

Detoxification - Food

• Irrespective of where they are in the world, get your clients to read the EWG’s Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides publication at www.foodnews.org.

Detoxification - Food

• Another super resource is Paul Chek’s book, Under The Veil of Deception, which explains in wonderful detail the concepts of organic agriculture.

Detoxification - Skin

• Women really don’t like this bit, but unfortunately, of course, a proportion of everything people put on their skin ends up in their body.

• Men are not immune to the effects of cosmetics and personal care products, but women use more!

Detoxification - Skin

• It can be really tough to coach women into reducing skincare toxin exposure. I usually start with everything else and move onto this last. Refer them to the visuals/ images for education.

Detoxification - Skin

• Again, the EWG has some great resources. I recommend you send your clients and patients to their information, irrespective of whether they are located in the US. The principles they teach apply to everyone, everywhere.

Detoxification - Skin

• The EWG Skin Deep Guide to Cosmetics rates the safety of some 68,000 personal care products, including make up, skincare, hair, nails, fragrance, babies and oral care.

Detoxification - Skin

• They also have a sunscreen guide that includes beach and sports sunscreens, moisturizers with SPF, lip balms with SPF and make-up with SPF.

Detoxification - Skin

• Finally, there’s an nice little guide on cleaners, called The Guide to Healthy Cleaning. It has information on more than 2,000 products.

Detoxification – Oral Cavity

• The oral cavity can be a major source of toxicity. We don’t have time to cover it here, but I’ve written about it extensively in Month One of the Hompes Method membership site:

– Silver mercury amalgams (mercury off gassing)

– Other dental materials (e.g. dentures and crowns)

– Root canals (bacterial overgrowth and toxicity)

– Cavitations (bacterial overgrowth and toxicity)

Detoxification – Oral Cavity

• I always ask my client/patient about their oral health and dental history very early on in the coaching process.

• On several occasions I’ve found oral problems to be contributing to whole body symptoms.

Detoxification – Oral Cavity

• If the oral cavity is a major source of toxicity/physiological stress you may find that your client/patient makes little or even no progress until the oral issues are resolved.

• Refer them to the Hompes Method membership site and/or to a holistic/biological/whole body dentist.

Detoxification – Sequence of Avoidance

• I’d focus on this sequence:

1. Clean up diet and resolve food toxin exposure.

2. Address simple lifestyle exposure: air fresheners, open windows, reduce skincare products, store detergents outside/in garage where possible, etc. Note that you may consider recommending an indoor air quality test – there are companies that will do this for your clients and patients.

Detoxification – Sequence of Avoidance

1. Focus on obtaining cleanest possible water according to budget (bottles, filters, whole house system) and optimize hydration status.

2. Test and fix the gut (remove bad bugs) – ensure proper elimination is happening.

3. Focus on supporting liver and other detoxification processes (supplements and cleanses)

4. Run specific detoxification protocols according to functional testing results.

Detoxification – Key Nutrient Support

• Recall that phase I and phase I require different nutrient groups and that specific nutrients are of great benefit in helping suppress the toxic effects of intermediary phase compounds.

Detoxification – Key Nutrient Support

Laboratory Evaluations in Functional and Integrative Medicine

Detoxification – Key Nutrient Support

• Phase I and intermediate metabolism:

– Minerals:

• Mg, Se, Cu, Mn, Zn

– B vitamins:

• Folic acid also included

– Antioxidants:

• Co-Q10, vitamins A, C & E, bioflavonoids, silymarin(milk thistle), pycnogenol, thiols, lipoic acid

Detoxification – Key Nutrient Support

• Phase II:

– Glutathione (gluathione conjugation)

– Glycine (amino acid conjugation)

– Sulfur compounds (from garlic, onion, etc.)

– N-acetyl cysteine (sulfation)

– Taurine (sulfation)

– Methionine (methylation / sulfation)

– Glutamine

– B6, B12, folic acid (methylation)

Detoxification – Phase I or Phase II?

• In the vast majority of cases, it’s pertinent to gently support phase I before attempting to up-regulate phase II. This sequence is preferred to help ensure that intermediate metabolites are properly removed through phase II. As stated previously, up-regulating phase I without the concomitant or prior up-regulation of phase II* can cause many problems.

• * As in juice fasting!

Detoxification – Phase I or Phase II?

• It is wise to carefully check your client/patient medication list to see whether specific meds are inducing or inhibiting liver pathways. But be aware you’ll nearly always need to up-regulate phase II initially.

Thank you!

• As always, thanks a million for tuning in.

• In Lesson thirteen, part two, we’ll bring in specific products and protocols for supporting detoxification.

• We’ll begin with phase II and work backwards.
