What is HCCI Engine?

• HCCI is a form of internal combustion in which the Homogeneous Charge is compressed to the point of auto ignition.

• HCCI incorporates the best features of both spark ignition (SI) and compression ignition (CI)

• As in an SI engine, the charge is well mixed, which minimizes particulate emissions.

• As in a CI engine, the charge is compression ignited and has no throttling losses, which leads to high efficiency.

Need of HCCI Engine

• Develop a means to reduce unwanted emissions that come from Internal Combustion Engines (ICE) And increase fuel economy.

Working Principle HCCI is characterized by the fact that the fuel and

air are mixed before combustion starts and the mixture auto-ignites as a result of the temperature increase in the compression stroke

Optical diagnostics research shows that HCCI combustion initiates simultaneously at multiple sites within the combustion chamber and that there is no

flame propagation.

Advantages

• Can achieve up to 15% fuel savings.

• Lower peak temperature leads to cleaner combustion/lower emissions.

• Can use gasoline, diesel, or most alternative fuels.

Disadvantages

• Higher cylinder peak pressures may damage the engine.

• Auto-ignition is difficult to control.

• HCCI Engines have a smaller power range.

Variable Valve Timing (VVT)

• This method gives finer control within combustion chamber, involves controlling the effective pressure ratio.

• It controls the quantity of retained or trapped exhaust to increase the temperature of air fuel mixture.

Dual Mode Operation

• Practical HCCI engines will need to switch to a conventional SI or diesel mode at very low and high load conditions due to dilution limits

HCCI Engine Prototypes

• General Motors has demonstrated Opel Vectra and Saturn Aura with modified HCCI engines.

• Mercedes-Benz has developed a prototype engine called Dies Otto, with controlled auto ignition. It was displayed in its F 700 concept car at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show.

The future of HCCI looks promising specially with partial HCCI mode.Major companies such as GM, Mercedes-Benz, Honda, and Volkswagen have invested in HCCI research.

• On application 10-15% of thermal efficiency can be increased.
