Since 1983, Nazareth Hous- ing has worked to shelter and empower individuals and families who reside on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. In 2008 we celebrate twenty-five years of serving homeless families, survivors of do- mestic violence and their children, vulnerable ado- lescents and teens, sen- iors and families with extremely limited finan- cial and social resources. We help them overcome many obstacles such home- lessness, unemployment, threat of eviction, landlord disputes, emotional and psychological stresses, fam- ily relationship dilemmas and other challenges. As years have passed Naz- areth Housing has become well known not only in the Lower East Side of Manhat- tan but in the five bor- oughs. Due to the ever increasing numbers of fami- lies and individuals coming to Nazareth Housing for assis- tance, Executive Director Mi- chael Callaghan decided that it was time for change. As he states, “In the summer of 2007 it became clear that our original site, which needed much updating and repair, was not able to sustain the volume of services we have been pro- viding. I am really pleased that we have been able to secure additional service space leased through Catholic Charities in our primary service area. Our new Family Services Center provides a state of the art facility with privacy and with new equipment for our staff to continue to deliver the high quality of personalized services for which Nazareth Housing has become known. ” In November 2007, we inaugu- rated our new office space at the Cardinal Spellman Center located at 137 East 2 nd Street between Avenue A and 1st. At the Family Services Center (FSC), the staff will be able to provide more personalized and individualized support service for individuals who are or who can become homeless. The FSC serves an array of service consumers and provides sup- port for the following critical services: Transitional shelter resident Case management recipients Housing Stability & Homelessness Prevention Services Financial Counseling Career Counseling Adolescent and Youth Counseling All of our services are provided in English and Spanish by our dedicated and well trained pro- fessional staff and consultants. Nazareth Housing has completed the first year of our Housing Stabil-ity Support Project (HSSP). Funded by New York State OTDA with an equal match of resources provided by Nazareth Housing the agency has been able to assist families and indi-viduals in preserving their housing and enhancing their family stability. Without the assistance provided by HSSP, many of these families would have become homeless. For the families who came to Nazareth Housing already homeless, the sup-portive services provided made their homeless condition shorter and less traumatic. They all received assis-tance that would not have been oth-erwise within their reach, and in their native language, so it could be best understood by them.

HSSP has dramatically increased the level of our provider partnerships and led to a broader and improved spectrum of services and referral linkages. There has been an equally

dramatic increase in the number of unduplicated individuals served, over 1,025 in the first twelve months of the project. This reflects a nearly 70% increase in individuals and families seeking housing stability and eviction pre-vention services with Nazareth Housing Mildred Perez, (pictured to the left), the HSSP Social Worker has lead the effort. She has been extremely effective in developing outreach efforts to connect with previously under-served populations. Housing Specialist, Cynthia Barton, has lent tremendous support in refer-rals for families seeking relocation and housing advice.

During the second year, of this project Nazareth Housing will develop and conduct a mid-year survey to evaluate the effective-ness of the services provided to the clients. We will focus this research on clients from a specific zip code, and specific served within a specific timeframe, to

assess their ongoing needs, and to identify new or existing services needed. Our goal will be to better understand how to improve the quality of our services and to learn the unmet needs we need address. Additionally we will undertake an expansion of our contacts with real estate managers and develop-ers to identify new vulnerable families in their buildings. This relationship will avoid clients be-ing delinquent with their rent and/or being evicted from their homes by our early intervention to help them with their housing needs. Finally we will continue to reach out to community organiza-tions, with an expansion of link-ages into areas of Brooklyn where there is an increase in high risk of housing instability.

For more information on how to link with HSSP or to receive assis-tance, contact Mildred Perez at 212-982-7800, ext. 13.

The Breukelein Institute has awarded Nazareth Housing nearing $25,000 this fiscal year in sup-port of our work with families facing homelessness and housing instability. Since 2001, The Breukelein’s Institute has contributed over $150,000 in support to Nazareth Housing’s mission to prevent and end homelessness in New York City. Breukelein’s focuses on improving the life of New Yorkers, with an emphasis on Kings County. It is significant to note that nearly 25% of families receiving services from Nazareth Housing are residents of Brooklyn. Our Housing Sta-bility Support Project has helped to increase our provision of services to Brooklyn households. As more and more families face pressures affecting their housing stability, our service to Brooklyn households will continue to expand in the coming year. “The historic and ongoing support of The Breu-kelein Institute is vital to the success of our mission and we are extremely grateful for this continued support” said Michael Callaghan, Executive Director. The Breukelein Institute received the Community Service Award from Nazareth Housing at our Annual Benefit in 2006.
